It is with some trepidation and heart-pangs that we see them go, but they have been tutored well in their lessons of courage and gallantry and will not fail. We do not know with what Dragons they will meet in the out- side world, but we do know they will meet them successfully and honorably as befits the Knights of Collinwood. P11110 lf11'1'ly-film 7 X L ? si MMM I' My Interpretation of the Tower Collinwood High School has a syrnbol, and that symbol is its tower. In reality the tower is a niassive structure of stone, brick and mortar, rearing itself six stories high against the blue sky. But to us who know and love Collinwood, it is iilled with deeper rneanings. It represents all that Collinwood stands for. I like to think ot the tower as a Tower of Truth for that is the standard--truth, honesty, and fair play--most deeply embodied in Collinwood. Upon truth all else is built. In this i'Tower of Truth the doors are always open, inviting all to enter. for here the great opportunity lies, the opportunity of acquiring an education. But that strong, substantially built tower represents work. hard work, without which one cannot hope to gain an education. By building on the sure foundation of truth, by taking advantage of the great opportunity and by hard work, we will gain our goal- an education, the reward for four years of faithful service. In this Way, this niassive structure-the tower-symbolizes to me the ideals of Collinwood. As early as the SA term Anne Andree, Helen Mills, Minna Klauminzer, Mildred- Fitzgerald were chosen to work on the Spotlight. A nevvswriting class was tormed ot which Florence Bradbury, Florence Slump, Mabel Kelly, Lois Burger, Roberta ll ilson, and David Sindell were members. The orchestra was started and Andrew Marsh and Louise Markel joined with violin and saxophone. In April was the play. You remember that truly superb reproduction ot David Copperheldn so ably rendered by the SB 1O's. David Sindell and .lohn Ehrbar as David Coppertield-Mildred Fitzgerald as Little Emily-the humble Ham now our most distinguished president, Milton Gary. -losephine Bernot was such a charming Peggoty that she has not yet been able to live it down. Rachel Schramm, Anne Andree, Helen Mills, Torrie Wiellington, Ruth Davis, all were in the cast. And then the 8BlO's tmy! what a live bunchlj gave a Hallowe'en party Where Minna Klauminzer and Helen Mills won the prize for the funniest costumes. Here is David Sindell president of a Typewriting club and secretary of the Student Council. Soon in that august body of Student Councillors we had many members. Ida Taylor, Marie Stone, Ethel -laco, Arnold Moore, lYilliam Reit- man, Milo Rudd, Everett Forbush, and in three successive years Lydia Kiraly, Josephine Bernot, and Fred Heiber were president. llie had good citizens too, Emily Scharlag and Mabel Kelly. And when letters were given out Homer Thompson, soccer team, and Tony Vacariello teven as a little kid Tony knew how to make 'em yellj were there. The track meet of 1925 was a walk-away for us, who are now 9A's. Anne Andree smashed all records for Reserve and Qberlin colleges for girls' running high-jtmip, and Minna Klauminzer also distinguished herself in the high-jump. Gt the boys Kavran won a 100 yard dash and Milton Gary covered himself with glory at the hurdles. Q1'd love to see Milt hurdling through spacel. Do you then remember the swimming exhibition with these mennaids, Helen Mills, Anne Andree, Minna Klauminzer, and Virginia Bauman? The next term Scholarship letters were awarded to Muriel White, Alice Billings, Mabel Kelly, Florence Bradbury, Mary Larick, Anne Andree. Amelia Kantz, and Lois Berger fthe boys seem to be missing, as usuall, That Christmas Eleanor Eckle won one dollar for her Christmas story in the Plain Dealer. Then of course came the 9A party. Louise Markel. Lydia Kiraley, Dorothy Vyilson, Rachel Schramm. Marie Stone, Babe'l Fitzgerald. Blanche Clucker, all were in this. After many arguments and battles, those eminent personages, the 12.-X class. betook themselves oit in February and left us ostentatious ones in peace. At class elections. it was decided that Milton Gary was the most ostentatious of us all. Anne Andree was elected vice-president, Mary Larick, secretary, and XYilliam Trader. treasurer. And here we are, 138 of us, graduating in june and leaving a void in Collin- wood which can only be Filled by happy memories of the class of june, '28, fr . Page thirty-nine THE TURRET The Development of a Greenie EMISRYONIC PERIOD HE so-called C.ireenie invariably comes in sizes ranging from three and one-half feet to six feet and is found only in the remote spots of Collinwood High School. XYhen first discovered it is like unto a lawn, save that the fawn is less timid. One notes particularly the peculiar facial expression, charac- teristic of only a Greenie. Notice, if you will, the wide-open eyes and the more wide-open mouth, the width of which rivals that of the Grand Canyon. The en- tire countenance is masked with an entirely blank, non-comprehending stare. This species is unequaled for its ability to be uncomprehending-for being void of the senses of hearing and seeing. ln fact, it is known to have been called hun haltere a word taken from the French meaning knowing not, seeing not, and hearing not. One may be justified at wondering how this creature exists in its surroundings, but science has discovered at last that it survives solely upon its nerve. lYhen it has been in existence for a period of one year, it sheds the skin of a Greenie and crawls into a shell of unimportance for two more semesters. Dur- ing this time, it is neither seen nor heard by the throngs of the outside world. ln the third stage of life it very meekly bears the name of Freshman mean- ing absolutely nothing at all. XVhile in this condition, one notes a slight but very evident desire on the part of the creature to sit up and take notice. As we look and sigh at this utterly helpless and hopeless, sweet and simple femphasis on the simplel atom we can scarcely believe in the saying, XYhere there is life, there is hope ! After another year of tender care and patient guidance, the Freshman takes new form and motive and not altogether gracefully becomes a Sophomore, Not much can be said to the credit of the being during this stage as this is the second and last of its inactive years. Alas, the thing is growing gawky and has lost al- most all its amoeba evidence, but inasmuch as it is apparently embarrassed and extremely awkward under our microscopic scrutiny, we shall look at the fourth period, commonly known as the .lnnior stage. Now we begin to realize that some day, supposedly soon, it shall begin to acquire a bit of knowledge. How it has lasted thus far we cannot state, and in due recognition of this fact will not go any further. However, the creature, we shall have to admit much against our will, is developing into a fairly attractive specimen. It now participates in affairs of the school and is a trilie efficient. Not- withstanding all this fairly favorable evidence, it is not yet quite mature enough for recognition. lt is evidently inspired with an emotion called school spirit. This promotes the growth of a more promising young man or woman whose heart and spirit are permeated with an interest for the welfare of his or her own school. Enough said about this era of its life. Page forty THE TURRET MATURE PERIOD Thus. leisurely and quite nndramaticallv, this individual enters into the most important and outstanding sphere of its existence. It now dons with honors and much pomp the title, if you please, of a Senior. The redeeming features of this being are its quiet manner, its grace, its charm. and its significance. It holds aloof from all surrounding beings. It is supreme in the accomplishment of twelve years of happiness. sorrow, fear, anger, and joy. Poise, purpose. and common sense have now been acquired. Those who have tended, pampered, and coated it are now placed far in the background. But nevertheless, they are rewarded with the product of a well-educated. industrious. full-hlooded, all-American youth, enter- ing the world imbued with the idea of getting things worth going after. and with a noble head iilled with constructive ideas, setting a brilliant example for those oncoming Greenies fig afif ik fyei' Payc forty-one THE TURRET Last Will and Testament li, the 111110 Class of 1928 of the Collizztuoocl High School of Clezieland, County of Czzyahoga and Staff of Ohio, being about 10 gzfarlzzafe. and of s011111l and clisfvosizzg 111i11rl and 111011101'y, do nzczkc, fmblislz, and dc- t'lC'll f' this om' last will and 1'csta1'11r111', lzvrvby 7'C'Z'0lZlll1g and a111111lli11g any and all zoills by IIS made l1cI'cz'0f01'e. Her face was crimson, heads of perspiration were covering her puzzled hrow. A frown took the place of that famous smile which she invariably wore. She spurned our questions as to her apparent dis- traction, and she hurried away mumbling something about getting a club write-up. Before we had recovered from the shock of a disheveled frowning Mary, we were almost bowled over by Anne Andree as she dashed down the hall, with books piled high, chewing at a sandwich, and one free hand clutching a few hundred pen- cils. Oh, dear, we thought this day of days would never end. As she came, we tried to stop her with a question, but she rushed past. A door slammed, and she was out of sight, presumably to wade through annual copy. She has the ability to make even this class interesting, and even though she makes them work all of her pupils are Hcrazyn about her. Mac sticks up for his H. R. teacher. Although the hair on his head is scarce, he's a good scout anyway. Tom and Andrew seem to prefer that pleasingly plump little person who rattles off the commercial math. Still another tit seems all of our beloved teachers are favoritesj is a jolly little English teacheriwith oh! what a temper. Something that'll thrill you will bore someone else most to death. Still, with the exception of Bill Hornig, I donlt believe there is anyone who hasn't been thrilled at Collinwood some way or 'nother. Anyway XYilliam XYolfram says he had quite a thrill in physics lab one day. when unbeknown to him, some prankish fellow decided to learn something con- cerning the inflammability of shoe laces-Hilly's in particular. Of course he shouldnt have been napping, or it wouldn't have happened. Most anyone would have been thrilled same as Alvin Salovon was, if he got F from Miss hlennings. We supposed Minna had had lots of thrills at Collinwood, but she says her one and greatest was when the l2.X class urfzuill-v proposed an annualf She, Minna Klauminzer, was flabbergasted! A summons to Mr. lYhitney's oilice seems lo have been the cause of thrills for Rachel Schramm and Elizabeth Cannon. Hardened as they are, both confess that they experienced qualms, quiverings, and finally thrills before their inter- views were ended. Uh, and Tony Vac. had his greatest fremitus wziy back in the 7th grade when Mary llukownik accepted a rose he had shyly t?3 offered her. LONG with the phenomenal growth of Collinwood High School in recent years. the Student Council has kept pace with all phases of its activities. Indicative of this statement is the fact that today this student govern- ment bodv is divided into two sections. junior and senior, who. expressing them- selves through the medium of the joint Executive Committee. are following their motto of Loyal Service by adequately accommodating themselves to the steady increase of student problems. In accordance with the constitution, the purpose of this council shall be to encourage initiative among the pupils and develop their participation in the gov- ernment of this school. It aims to supply the organization through which the pupils may express their opinion, assist in the administration of the school, and take over the management of school enterprises, subject to the approval of the principal. The student organization consists of a junior and a senior section. The junior section is composed of representatives of the junior Highg the senior section of representatives of the Senior High. The Executive Committee is a joint group consisting of the ofticers of each council, ex-ofiicio, and one represen- tative from each grade. Every Collinwood student who is a representative member of the Student Council automatically becomes the president of his home room. Thus, he is urged to take an active part in all of its meetings and activities and to promote its purpose. The meetings of the Student Council are held on Monday duiing home room period, while those of the Executive Committee are held on Thursday at different periods. The training given is as varied as it is broad. It includes the adaptation of principles of leadership in the school room and in committee work, the encour- agement of initiative among students. development of participation in school gov- ernment, and the ability to secure efficient service from others. At the close of each school year an Annual Report is published containing the events and work that comprise the history of the Student Council for that particular year. Q Pagv lzizzffy-foln' THE TURRET Football 1927 Season ESPITE the fact that Collinwood's football team of the season of 1927 shows only three games won, and one tied. the Collinwood backers feel that this season marks a start up-grade for football. Collinwood's big Blue and Gray eleven inaugurated its first football season under Coach Yost with a sure victory over the -lohn Adams team by a score of 13-S on September 23. Beneath a blistering hot sun on October 1 the blue-jerseyed grid machine spanked the highly-tooted Cleveland Heights to the tune of 13-2. At the very outset of the bout, it looked as if Collinwood was destined to tear Heights to shreds. Although Heights gathered twelve first downs on Collinwoods four, they were unable to cross the Blue and Gray goal line. On October 8. the speedy Collinwooclsmen invaded Lorain and carried home an 18-6 victory. Collinwood galloped over the dusty cow pasture that Lorain graces with the title of gridiron for the initial score early in the first half. Coach Yost and his Blue and Gray ball-toters met their XYaterloo on October 15 when Akron East. giving them their severe test of the season. took all the breaks that goes with a close. hard-fought battle and a 12-O verdict. An eye for an eye contest was staged at the john Adams lielrl, October 21, when the Gray Tornado held the big Orange and Blacl-1 eleven from South to a 6-6 deadlock. An apparent victory blossomed into a mere tie. Penalties for roughness on the part of Collinwood when their goal line was threatened caused them to go down to a 20-O defeat by the Shaw Gridders, October 29. before 3,000 spectators at Shaw Stadium. On Xovember 5 at Thomas Edison tield the crippled Yostmen fell before Cathedral Latin's unbeaten football warriors. The locals were no match for the Catholic aggregation. who out-passed and out-punted the Blue and Gray. The final score was 24-7. Canton McKinley's husky football machine walloped the Five Points Boys 34-O in a stubborn game on Xovember 12. Old rivals tangled once more, November 18. when Collinvvood met Glenville for their second annual football conflict. The Blue and Grays were unable to score against the fast-footed Glenville eleven, thus ending the hard fought fray, 12-0. This ended Collinwood High's second season on the gridiron. THE TURRET Basketball 1928 Season OPPING the title of Senate Champions by fourteen undefeated games is the record of the Collinwood basketball team of 1928. Cleveland Heights was encountered first on December 9. They presented little opposition and were turned back 28-9. Wfhen the Youngstown East boys came here on December 16 for a visit, the Railroaders used their best manners and defeated them only 17-5. Rocky River was sunk in the third game, on December 23, to the tune of 25-12. Berwald made 13 points out of the 25. XVith Berwald playing his usual game and scoring 12 points, the Collinwood Cagers had little difficulty in downing Akron East, 25-14, on january 6. January 13, found the Clifford men adding the powerful Vtiest quintet to their first semester conquests, with a score of 23-5. On January 19, the team went to Sandusky and defeated their hosts in a well-played game 23-19. The locals were hampered by the glass back boards, but Red saved the day with three goals and six fouls. An easy victory was claimed by the Blue and Gray basketeers when they dumped East High 26-13 on the home floor. The champion ball toters practically cinched the Senate title for another sea- son when they walloped Lincoln, 46-13. VVith Berwald, Dawson and Velvick sinking baskets from every spot on the fioor, the undaunted varsity piled over Shaw High 61-12 on February 25. West Tech held the Five Points boys to a close score at the end of the half. They led 6-4 at the first quarter, but Went to pieces in the finals, ending with 27-13. On March 9, the locals continued their march to the championship by down- ing Glenville 2O-12. Glenville played a good brand of basketball with a score of 11-12 in the third quarter with five minutes to play. Things began to happen: four baskets in a row put us far out in front. llfith the league championship safely grasped, it was a ntting finish for the unique Collinwood team to finish the season undefeated. The slate was kept clean by toppling the East Techers, 25-13. Although next mid-year graduation will find Collinwood without a member of the famous varsity, a great season is prophesied with the material present. Page 111'1zvIy-riyffil THE TURRET ? R-r-right dress! lfron-n-t face V, How well these commands recall the glorious gym hours which the .I une graduates enjoyed in the days gone by. The outstanding figure of these recollections is none other than Miss Mary H. Steeds whose untiring efforts have proved fruitful, for not only have her students accomplished much in class. but a few have been outstanding in Ccnnmunity Center basketball and in after school soccer and baseball games. BASKETBALI. During the winter months, part of the gym period was used to instruct the girls in basketball technique. Each homeroom chose a team and a homeroom cap- tain. Much enthusiasm and interest was shown when the inter-homeroom games were played after school. The 12A team, Anna Andree, Minna Klauminzer, as captains, Helen Mills. Luella lYhitelaw, Arline Zehe, Ruth Davis, Mildred Fitz- gerald. and lfary Delisio, were the champs of their grade in their lOth and llth years. SOCCER Midst the cool winds of autumn and the early winter snows. girls of this class could be seen kicking or running after a ball on a water-soaked tield. They were the members of the grade soccer team during their 9th and lOth years. The team stayed after school and struggled hard to beat their upper classmen but it was in Vain. GYM liXHlBl'l'lOX The gym exhibitions of l925, 1926, and 1927, were features in which a number of the graduating girls were prominent, Anna Andree, Mary Bukownik, Rose Pazicky. and Minna Klauminzer were leaders of some of the drills, while Mildred Fitzgerald and Louise Markel were prominent in the special numbers. Other girls of the class were in the wand drill, Indian club drill, march. sailor dance. Spanish dance, pyramids, and games.
