PAUL ANDERSON, Super- intendent of Collinsville School, whose hours of planning, miles of traveling, and hours of hard work made this exception- al opportunity available to high school students in this area. The trial was by far the most outstanding event of the school year. Losing Football Coach Winner As 'Defendant' at Mock Trial The Defendant The Trial Lawyers square off COLLINSVILLE - Maybe there! is hope for the losing footballl coach after all. One was deten- dant in a murder trial here Friday and was acquitted by a jury that included members of his losing Collinsville iootball team of the 1961 season. The defendant in the mock trial was R. S. George. A jury oi 12 Collinsville high school students heard the testimony presented by practicing attorneys and returned a verdict of not guilty after delib- eration of 45 minutes. The occasion was an observ- ance of Law Day, and the pro- gram was designated to acquaint high school students with process- es of the law in a court case. The program, Trial by Jury- U. S. A., was based on an actual court case from Texas trial rec- ords. None of the participants, i.n- cluding several members of the Grayson County Bar Association, knew how the jury ruled in the actual case. 400 Persons ln Auditorium The Collinsville auditorium was the courtroom. with the partici- included approximately 400 per- sons, including students from Col-I linsville, S a d l e r - SoutlirnaycL Whitesboro, Whitewi-ight and Gun- ter. ' Mr. George played the role of John Charles Smith, accused of murder with .malice in the death of his wife. All evidence present- ed was circumstantial in nature. Paul Anderson, Collinsville sup- erintendent, termed the trial a -distinct success. There was tre- lmendous interest on the part of the students, he said. This was a new and interesting experience for them. The acquittal was based, the the fact that the jury said, on .-..l.1.e. evidence was not circumstantial strong enough to warrant convic- tion. .
