100 years Of Mis tori This year’s co editors. Wendy Bradshaw and Diane Stroud, research history from old yearbooks. This year's 1981 KAHOKIAN theme pays tribute to the past 100 classes to graduate from Collinsville High School. In 1881 the high school was included with the grade school at Webster. Although high school subjects were taught beginning in 1882, a separate high school was not maintained until 1908. In 1908 about 70 boys and girls entered the eighth grade in the first year of the school's existence. By the survival of the fittest, there were 25 students (II boys and 14 girls) left to graduate in 1913. The class of 1913 was the first class to complete the entire course of the high school since its organization. The Vandalia Campus building was completed in October of 1908 at a cost of $50,000. The original building was remodeled and enlarged in 1922. A $25,000 shop building was added in 1937, more classrooms were added in 1956, and a gymnasium was added to the north end of the older gym. The Greenwood Campus opened its doors to the students in August of 1971. Ten years later in 1981, the final decision was made to close the Vandalia Campus with the exception of the industrial arts building and the gymnasium. In 1913 some interested students experimented with the first high school yearbook, the Chantecler. At that time, it had been said that Collinsville would not support a yearbook. This proved to be untrue-, the yearbook has survived through the years with the exception of those years around the time of the Great Depression. In 1926 the yearbook’s name changed from the Chantecler to the Kahokian. Because of those few interested students of 1913, the concept i of a yearbook become a reality. Because of the hard work and 1 dedication of so many through the years, the yearbook has I grown into an important part of Collinsville High School.
