SDA PRESENTS “MATCHMAKER” Milliner Becky displays hats and disgusted looks to her employee, Marsha. A handshake instead of a kiss? A certain old merchant of Yonkers is now so rich that he decides to take a wife. To this end he employs a matchmaker, a woman who subsequently becomes involved with two of his menial clerks, assorted young and lovely ladies, and the head waiter at an expensive restaurant where this swift farce runs into a hilarious climax of complication. After everyone is straightened out romantically and everyone has his heart's desire, the merchant of Yonkers finds himself affianced to the astute matchmaker herself. He, who was so shrewd in business, is putty in the hands of a player like Cheryl Pikoriatis, who was the matchmaker. He is fooled by apprentices in a series of hilarious hide-and-seek scenes, and finally all his bluster explodes in his face. 24

When drinks were served to shoppers, booze business meant boom business. “A THURBER CARNIVAL” The scenes are sketches of tumbling American life. Here we find the famous “The Night the Bed Fell,” the fable of the unicorn in the garden, and “Gentlemen Shoppers,” which is a fine shopping spree for two men as long as the martinis flow. “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” appears in the second act, as does the unforgettable “File and Forget” in which Thurber recounts his famous correspondence with various publishers who again and again ship him books which he never ordered in the first place. Bill Thomas, assisted by Ellen Shaffer, gives scholarly advice to all animal lovers. 25
