The fun is largely that of misery —present troubles, memories of suffering, and the tribulations of loves past, current and future. When the play begins, we find Butch Norton as Harry Berlin, looking like a shaved but mustachioed beatnik who has sunk so low that honest beatniks will disown him. He has no future other than jumping off a bridge, which he is about to do when Walter Kuhlman as Milt Manville comes along and intervenes. Because Milt and Harry were college classmates, Milt, now a picture of prosperity, is most sympathetic when he hears Harry’s tale of woe. But Luv has ample place in its bosom for more than one miserable fellow. Milt is also full of frustration. His wife will not release him to let him marry the girl he loves. Presently, Pat Stem as Milt’s wife, Ellen, appears. As she stands under a lamp-post, her expression congealed and her fur-coated body rigid, it is clear that she, too, is torn by anguish. Now we have a triangle unmatched in misery. Milt has an inspiration! If he can get his wife and his college chum interested in each other, he will be free. Alas— Milt, Ellen, and Harry experience only sorrow and agony; and the greater their problems and misunderstandings, the more we laugh. “Onward trusty bicycle; it's time to find my wife. There’s no need to get upset; I can explain everything. 22 Pat just can’t seem to decide between her two Romeo’s. 23 SDA PRESENTS “MATCHMAKER” Milliner Becky displays hats and disgusted looks to her employee, Marsha. A handshake instead of a kiss? A certain old merchant of Yonkers is now so rich that he decides to take a wife. To this end he employs a matchmaker, a woman who subsequently becomes involved with two of his menial clerks, assorted young and lovely ladies, and the head waiter at an expensive restaurant where this swift farce runs into a hilarious climax of complication. After everyone is straightened out romantically and everyone has his heart's desire, the merchant of Yonkers finds himself affianced to the astute matchmaker herself. He, who was so shrewd in business, is putty in the hands of a player like Cheryl Pikoriatis, who was the matchmaker. He is fooled by apprentices in a series of hilarious hide-and-seek scenes, and finally all his bluster explodes in his face. 24 When drinks were served to shoppers, booze business meant boom business. “A THURBER CARNIVAL” The scenes are sketches of tumbling American life. Here we find the famous “The Night the Bed Fell,” the fable of the unicorn in the garden, and “Gentlemen Shoppers,” which is a fine shopping spree for two men as long as the martinis flow. “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” appears in the second act, as does the unforgettable “File and Forget” in which Thurber recounts his famous correspondence with various publishers who again and again ship him books which he never ordered in the first place. Bill Thomas, assisted by Ellen Shaffer, gives scholarly advice to all animal lovers. 25 ASSEMBLIES INSPIRE SPIRIT Kahoks line up to show their mighty team. Students link-up to show class spirit. 26 The Ugly-man court eagerly await tne nnai decision. UGLY-MAN REIGNS OVER CHS Debbie is swept off her feet by her Ugly-man. 27 My! Isn’t that a handsome pair? FOURTH Amid the seventy-eight gridders who reported for practice in the heat of summer, ten 1967 lettermen strained to overshadow all others and hold on to their already molded positions. As the dead of winter came, it brought with it the purple C” to be awarded to thirty-eight deserving gridders. The Kahoks first bitter defeat was enough to spur them to victories over Quincy, Granite City, and Edwardsville. While the tough Belleville West team slowed the Purple and White, it was not enough to keep them from bringing home a homecoming victory. Our proud Kahoks fought and compiled a 4-5 win-loss record. In conference play the Kahoks accumulated a 2-4 record. ROW: E. Kee, D. Ethridge, G. Kusmierczak, J. Payne, D. McDowell C. Kaiser, V. Stogner, D. Rcnsing. J. Baczcwski. S. Oakley. M. Horst man, D. At the Carbondale tournament t h e cagers placed fourth. They defeated St. Patricks of Chicago and the Wildcats of Marion, but were upset by Mounds Meridian, and the Purple and White were out of the championship running. VARSITY BASKETBALL COACHES—Frank Pilol and Virgil Fletcher. 52 BASKETBALL MANAGERS—Craig Lecce and Bob Jansen. Basketball managers Craig Lecce and Bob Jansen are the important “behind the scenes” backers of the CHS team. They keep tabs on uniforms and maintain equipment. They also supply the players with tape before practices and games. But perhaps most important they help maintain team spirit. Although basketball i s sophomore Bob Jansen’s favorite sport, he also expresses interest in tennis and baseball. Craig Lecce plans to be a varsity golfer. UPCOMING HARDCOURTGREATS FRONT ROW: E. Their skillful leaps and stands won them fifth place among 60 chcerleading squads at Cheerleading Camp All-American in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, last August. They also won first place for their skit “Together Wherever We Go” and third place for their home cheer “Varsity Victory.” The “purple peppers” brought back with them a total of fifteen new cheers and mounts and several skit ideas that helped boost the morale of our Kahoks at pep assemblies and games. The Collinsville chapter of the National Honor Society, co-sponsored by Mrs. Pauline Deason and Mrs. Terri Hayes, kept up tradition by operating the paperback bookstore, by sponsoring the coat check at the basketball games, by posting the honor roll, and by decorating the new annex with a Christmas wreath. In addition to these activities, the organization worked on a project to aid an underprivileged child. To participate in such activities, it is necessary for a student to be outstanding. And it is so with Honor Society members. To become a member of Honor Society, a student is selected for his character, scholarship, leadership, and service. Quill and Scroll is a nation-wide club which consists of honorary members. These members must work on the Kahoki or Kahokian for a year, be nominated by the members or advisers, and rank in the upper one-third of their class. The goal of Quill and Scroll is to publish a magazine. Miss Janet Kirsch and Miss Jo Ruk-avina were the sponsors for the 1968-69 school year. Get 'em while they’re red hot. During the year, the gathering place for freshmen, sophomores. juniors and seniors is the Tepee. Tepee not only provides a recreational center for the youth, but also performs a public service by their annual projects. Tepee sponsors the last social event of the year, the May Dance. Money for this final fling is partly obtained through the annual Light Bulb Sale. Mr. Ed Phelps and the adult council kindly donate their leisure time to aid the Tepee council in their projects and weekly dances. The Student Council is the one organization at CHS in which students can voice their opinions and aid the school and themselves at the same time. Under the leadership of the executive board, President Dee Walker, Vice-President Bruce Reeb, Secretary Emily Cleaver, Treasurer Debby Daggett, and Parliamentarian Peggy Cohill, and the sponsor, Edmund Phelps, the student council carried on various activities during this year. To begin the year they held an orientation day for all sophomores and new students. During the year the members could be seen selling various items such as pep pins for basketball games. The council sponsored many projects such as gathering candy for the orphans, organizing the Homecoming Parade. and holding forums for students and parents on topics such as drugs and juvenile delinquency. As in the past, the school supply store was run by the student council. Several students attended the annual state convention in April. The annual talent show and roast beef dinner were also held. The council ended the year with their annual banquet. The school store aids another student in distress. 66 STUDENT COUNCIL—FRONT ROW: J. Hester, D. Thorpe. B. J. Cooper, P. Ferguson. L. Wise, K. In addition to the usual announcements, clubs could advertise happenings and products to be sold in the form of skits. How else could we have stayed awake during homeroom? On Tuesday afternoons in Room 205 the sound of ambitious voices debating could be heard. These were the members of the Debate Club which was sponsored by Mrs. Betty Reed. This year's debaters had to rebuild the club, and they had a fine membership to work with. The Debate Club went to several debate tournaments this year including the Belleville Invitational Tournament. The purposes of the club are to train people in photography, to further chances for people in photography, and to give experience to camera enthusiasts. The officers for this year were President Rich Brittin. Vice-President Duane Spilker. Secretary Tom Cochran, and Treasurer John Smith. The Audio-Visual Club is composed of dedicated students who give up their study halls to work with the audio-visual equipment. The students were responsible for the care and repair of recorders, phonographs, and projectors. They made transparencies for overhead projectors and spliced film. When teachers requested it, the members operated the equipment. The headquarters of the Audio-Visual Club was Room 101. The sponsor was Mr. Geroff. 71 A LOOK TO THE FUTURE FBLA, Future Business Leaders of America, provides its members with information about business careers. This year the club won third prize for its float in the Homecoming Parade. The members also donated canned goods in order to make Thanksgiving baskets for needy families. In December, they made Christmas toys and distributed them to the patients in the children's ward at Belleville Memorial Hospital. Some of the members attended the State Convention at Springfield. During the year the club visited libraries in the surrounding area, including the Pope Pius XII Library, the St. Louis University Library, and the Washington University Library. The club organized a tour of the CHS Library for the English classes. They also sponsored an open house for the CHS Library and held a tea for the teachers. At the end of the year, a banquet was held, and the officers for the coming year were installed. Chess Club was organized to encourage an interest in chess and provide students with an opportunity to master the game. The club gathered every Tuesday in the cafeteria. After a short business meeting, the members played and observed games of chess. To aid the members. the club provided chess sets and books on chess strategy. This year for the first time, the club staged chess contests with other schools. A tournament for CHS students was also conducted, and the winner was awarded a trophy. In May, the Chess Club held its annual picnic at Woodland Park. 77 SERVICE TO STUDENTS “We build the ladder by which we rise.” is the motto of the Hi-Tri League. Meeting the second and fourth Mondays each month, the club seeks to help each girl attain a strong character, to promote courtesy among students, and to help each girl win her way to unselfish success. Sponsored by Miss Myrtle Frueh, the Hi-Tri League planned several projects for the year including visits to nursing homes and orphanages. The members also prepared boxes for servicemen and collected for the March of Dimes. HI-TRI—FRONT ROW: D. Perry. P. Massey, M. Bilyeu, Pres.; M. Vogt. V. Franklin, B. Brandenburg. SECOND ROW: J. Answering the telephone, running errands, filing, taking green slips to students, passing out and collecting absentee sheets, and occasional typing were just a few of the many useful tasks these students performed. Not only did they help the office, but they also gained many skills and knowledge which will help them in their years after high school. 79 TOOLS FOR COMMUNICATION Phi Epsilon meets once a month under the direction of Mrs. Dorothy Koclling. The goal of the club is to learn more about Roman life and civilization. Using the theme “Veni, Vidi, Vici”. Latin Club entered a horse-drawn chariot in the Homecoming Parade. One of the highlights of the year was the Roman banquet held during National Latin Week while the big event was the State Latin Convention held in the spring. The purpose of the Spanish Club is to help students learn about the language, customs, literature, and arts of Spanish America. The club sold charts to aid language students and sponsored many other projects. The funds were used to send a student to Mexico. All of the student’s expenses were paid by the club. The club presented parties and programs on days of importance in Spanish speaking countries. Spanish Club ended the year with the annual banquet. LATIN CLU —FRONT ROW: G. Hall, V.-Pres.; D. The band this year was one of the best. Its activities were extensive. During the year the band played for the premiere of the movie “Paper Lion” and for the fortieth anniversary celebration of the Fox Theatre. The band also had a recording accepted by the Educational Record Reference Library. The members entertained during half time at the football games and presented five concerts during the year. The band took their annual tour during Easter vacation and performed in Houston and Dallas, Texas. This year the band reached and exceeded its goal which was to train young musicians to be fine instrumentalists and to help develop a better understanding of music through participation. 82 Wilson, D. HARMONY HIGHLIGHTS CHS During the quiet time before school and many hours after school, strains of music rose from a room Filled with ambitious music students, choruses, ensembles, soloists, pianists, and dancers. Mrs. Gibson worked to guide these talented students through many successful performances. In November and January an advanced choral ensemble performed in the District Six and the All-State Music Festivals. Several soloists also represented CHS at the State Music Contest. Along the way, the chorus presented beautiful seasonal concerts at Christmas and in the spring, made many appearances for local clubs and church organizations, and honored the seniors at graduation by singing two requested serious songs. One of their money-making projects was the annual spaghetti supper. In May a year’s work on the annual Variety Show, “Women, Suffer Ye Not!” came to a glorious and satisfying conclusion. The show was set in the Wyoming Territory of 1869 and highlighted women’s suffrage. The script was written by the student director, Cheryl Pikoriatis, and her chairmen: Gary Swalley, Jackie Reece, Frannie Preloger, and Jo Parr. The chorus devoted a vast amount of time and effort to this year's show and should be commended. LEADS—STANDING: M. Cook, J. Dcckard. L. Burkett. J. Irvin. M. Hoff. J. Parr. G. Swalley. M. Platt. V. They had elected officers, chosen Student Council representatives, and filled other posts. By Homecoming, they were used to the work and were now ready for the fun to be combined with it. They worked long, hard hours on their float, and they realized that working together was a valuable experience. During the Coronation, they all watched with pride when the Sophomore Maid, Miss Janice Fricke, entered Fantasy-land. Football and basketball seasons brought the sophomores out in full force to cheer the mighty Kahoks on to victory. In January the school was hit by a barrage of Kahok garters, a new and novel sales idea typical of the class. The hardest work is still ahead, but the Class of’71 will meet all of its challenges. JUNIORS EYE FUTURE WHILE In late August of 1967, 650 sophomores of the class of “70” entered CHS for the first time. We discovered the high standards of academic and athletic excellence expected of us. This fall our junior class presented the school an elegant, fanciful Coronation. Entitled “Fantasyland,” some of that mood seemed to fill the gymnasium that magical evening. Our lovely maid, Pat Meurcr, was the center of attention as she entered to “The Shadow of Your Smile.” Our class supported the new Basketball Coronation by electing Zoe Lakes our junior maid to the Queen’s court. Late in our junior year our class sustained tradition by giving the soon-to-graduate seniors a memorable Prom. The French atmosphere of “Night in Paris” provided a beautiful high point in our years at CHS. Having now finished two years at CHS, our class has displayed that it has the courage and talent to face the challenge and promise of the future. STANDING: 1 ynn Militcllo, Chris Jack-stadt. Debbie Chiapelli, sponsor; Miss 3anet Kuncl, Carla Beshcars, Debbie Adcrhold. Kathic Ganninger. Students fail to realize how valuable their class executive board really is. Each year they arc given a ballot and asked to vote for those ten who they think will do the most for their class and work the hardest. After elections, students forget that the board exists for their benefit, planning class projects and serving at class functions. Eight members of the 1969 executive board have been elected to serve three years consecutively. These members are: Bob Burns, Janet Holst, Ken Kosten, Donna Hadfield, Debbie Chiapcl-li, Kathie Ganninger, Debbie Ad-erhold, and Lynn Militcllo. These members devoted much time and effort to the class during their high school years and arc deserving of much praise for a job well done. Our beautiful Football Queen was escorted to her throne by Dennis Toon. Time it was. And what a time it was. It was . . . A time of innocence, A time of confidences. Long ago ... it must be .. . Senior Powderpuff Oilers huddle up to plan strategy. SKUNK 'EM, the senior float, took top prize in homecoming parade. Three years have passed since the class of 1969 first entered the halls of Collinsville Senior High School. They came as bewildered sophomores, curious and energetic. Mixed classes and morning bulletins were new experiences for them, but they soon adjusted to their new surroundings. Passing on to the title of “upperclassmen,” the new juniors upheld traditions by presenting their coronation in '67, “Dixieland.” Prom ’68, held at Tradcr-Vic's in St. Louis, was entitled “Younger Than Springtime.” Hours of planning and hard work resulted in a successful junior year, evident in the various accomplishments. By the close of the 1968 school year, these juniors were ready to receive the title “Seniors,” having fulfilled all that was expected of them and having gained the experience necessary to become the top class. More than 500 seniors filled the halls of CHS on the first day of the 1968-69 school year. Proud of their class status, they strove to become the best in all fields. Two seniors were named as NMSQT Finalists, and 32 seniors placed as Illinois State Scholarship Finalists. Others excelled in the fields of art and literature and ranked in contests of language and speech. For seniors the end of the best years of their lives was close at hand, and they sought to make every moment more memorable. At school and away they supported their teams, fighting for the KAHOK Purple White. Opposition stimulated enthusiasm, and seniors responded with a unified spirit and a strong sense of pride. Having suffered through the perils of being underclassmen, they endeavored to succeed as upperclassmen, willing to participate in all events. This class was a class of performance and accomplishment, willing to set its goals high and strive for perfection. Hopefully, their devotion and spirit will be carried on by upcoming seniors, and their influence will serve new classes; memories of their success will encourage others to accomplishments. Senior Executive Board plans upcoming projects. 151 Debbie Adcrhold John Allison Jim Albaugh Karen Althardt Rosann Anderson Bruce Armon Teresa Armstrong Kathy Arnold Thomas Arnotti William Backs Stc han ad cr Deborah Banes Stanley Banks Steven Banks Diane Barillaro Jim Barker David Barton Gerald Baumann Linda Bax Steve Beard 152 Sharon Bcckcr Jeff Bell Julie Belobraydic Charlene Bennett Terry Bennett Gloria Bentley Sandra Berg Vana Berry Carla Beshears Peggy Biggers Scott Biggers Mary Bilyeu Steve Birger Gary Blackburn Pamela Black Steven Black Craig Blase Lenny Blaylock Diane Bloom William Bode 153 Janice Bodimer Jerry Bolandis Linda Boothman Mike Bordoni Marci Bowler M ike Bozzello Beverly Brandenburg Harry Brandt Stephen Bright Rich Brittin Mary Brockmire Rose Brombolich Glennetta Brown Richard Brown Linda Brumitt Marty Bub Dorothy Bucher Robert Burns Katherine Burrus Dianne Burton 154 Lxneiifi, Busch Dennis Caminiti Mike Carr Jay Carter Don Caselli Darrell Cawvey Nick Ceretto Deborah Chepcly Jeannie Chessor Debbie Chiapelli Gary Childress Michael Clark Randy Clayton Emily Cleaver 155 Steve Clouatre Charles Coffin Judy Cohen Peggy Cohill Brenda Coleman Donna Colone Mike Cook Odell Cook Beverly Cookson Ricky Coombs Joan Cooper Janette Coulson Chris Cox Vicki Cox I.inda Crabtree Judith Crittenden Charlotte Crossno Francis Cullen Debbie Cunningham Randy Cunningham 156 Cynthia Curtis Dan Cusanelli Debby Daggett Steve Dankenbring Janice Darron Janet Davis Susan Davisson Michael Dean Barbara Deason John Deluca Mark Deinatteis Kathy Deppe Barbara Detchman Sandra Dierkes Marie Digirolamo Diane Dimmic Patricia Divine Pal Doherty Marilyn Donna Edward Doolin 157 Glenn Drcnkhahn Judy Dudik Jerry Duncan James Dunnagan Donga Purer Durwood Durham Francis Duvall Steven Eade Gary Earlin Sandi Eberle Larry Eckert Joyce Edwards Pete Erickson Gary Eversmann Kathy_FauhJ Pat Ferguson James Ferris Bruce Fields Dan Fischer Diane Fitch 158 Donna Fitch James Fitzgerald Debra Forshee Michelle Foster Paula Fourcault Connie Foust Janet Fraley Yvonne Franklin James Frederick Robbie Freeman Barbara French Rita Fricke Gene Friederich Linda Frizzell 159 Sarah Furfaro Randall Furlow George Gallaher Kathie Ganninger Gayle Geissert Pete Gifford Nancy Giger Sandra Goldsmith Sydney Goldsmith Bryan Gore Luvenia Gorman Sue Grafe Judy Graham Uury Graham Dave Gray Betty Grisolano Kathy Grisolano Charles Gronau Duane Grooms Eva Guadagano 160 Carla Gunter William Haddiclc Donna Hadficld Ronald Hahn Steve Haislar Darla Hall Glen Hall Linda HaH Norma Hall Dianne Hallows Linda Hanna Richard Harner Deborah Harris David Harrison Bill Hart Gail Haywood LLarokLHeini Jeanette Hellrung Linda Henry Linda Herren 161 Senior hall monitors check passes during lunch hours. This year CHS had the honor of welcoming the International Fellowship Exchange Student, Hugo Alfonso Chocano, from Lima, Peru. After Finishing high school and attending the National University of Engineering in Peru his college freshman year, he came to the United States for the first time. Hugo felt that the biggest adjustment he had to make was adapting to America’s routine of life. Hugo’s father, mother, and older brother still live in Peru, while his older sister lives in the United States. In the future, Hugo hopes to obtain a scholarship to a liberal arts school in the United States where he hopes to major in electronics. From his trip, Hugo learned to appreciate the advantages of the United States and now better understands the customs, language, and people of another country. CHS hopes that through Hugo a better understanding of both countries has occurred. Hugo does research work for his term paper. Kathie lends a helping hand to Hugo. But hare of laurel they live, dream, and die; For Poesy alone can tell her dreams— With the fine spell of words alone can save Imagination from the sable chain And dumb enchantment—who alive can say, “Thou art no Poet—may'st not tell thy dreams ? Since everyman whose soul is not a clod Hath visions, and would speak, if he had loved, And been well nurtured in his mother tongue. Whether the dream now purposed to rehearse Be poet's or fanatic's will be known When this warm scribe, my hand, is in the grave. —John Keats This volume was compiled to capture important and commonplace moments in our school days. We hope that in later years, as wc look through these pages, we will recall all the dreams ot our youth. Wc hope never to lose the desire to dream; we hope never to lose the courage to relate our dreams because we will always cherish the art of expression. Everyman has his dreams; therefore, everyman is an artist, a poet. 183 Reta Hoskin Bill Lchares ADERHOLD. DEBBIE Student Council 2,3; Executive Board 2,3. 4; Mu Alpha Theta 3,4; Kahokian Staff 4.
