Page 30 Senior The Class of 1957 entered Collinsville High School in September, 1953. As freshmen, we were awed; as sophomores, better acquainted; as juniors, established; and as seniors, we were well-known! There are many memories which we shall cherish—the excitement of Homecoming, the beauty of the Coronation, and the thrill of the Prom. Also there are the countless friendships we have made to make our four years complete. We will look back and remember the help and understanding our teachers have shown us in our scholastic and extra-curricular activities. Yes, we will always remember our alma mater. Bucket Broom Brigade. is prophesied.................. TIME: 1967 PLACE: Preston Hotel CHARACTERS: Class of '57 It is the reunion of the Class of 1957 and YOU ARE THERE. We now take you to the Preston Hotel where the Class of '57 from Collinsville High School is holding their class reunion. You may recognize some of the dignitaries strolling around the lobby, but if you don't, you will be introduced in due time. Oh, now here’s a distinguished-looking gentleman coming toward us. Why, it can’t be, but it must be, Larry Abraham. Let's ask him about his trip here from that Paradise Lost, Morris Hills. Hi Larry, how was your trip? It was a wonderful and relaxing trip and I'll be darned if I didn't see some of the old '57ers. To start off, who should be sitting right next to me on the train but Charlie Alvarez, you know he's a manufacturer of bibbed overalls, now. I had an interesting chat in the dining car with Kenneth Baumgartner. He was telling me about the book he had just written, all about atomic energy. Gene Dailey and Jim Eckart were sitting at the table right across from us and they told us that John Bardsley is the engineer of the Podunk Special, the train on which we were riding. What are Jim and Gene doing now?” Well, Gene is a manufacturer of silent heel plates and Jim has a booming business as a fruit peddler on North Morrison in Collinsville. But that's not all, I have more to tell you. Just as our waitress, Jane Meyers, was bringing our tray who should bump into her and knock it out of her hand but Gene Blaylock. The contents didn't scatter all over the floor but landed in Ruth Atteberry's lap. When everything was straightened out, Gene told us that he is doing all right as a barber in Shaggy Hair Holler; and Ruth disclosed to us that she was heading for New York where she will begin her fifth trip around the world on her amphibious bicycle. She wasn’t so elated over this accomplishment as she might have been for she had just received word that her old classmate, Oma Jean Pegues had established herself as first woman to fly around the world in a flying saucer.” My that was an accomplishment! Did you meet anyone else?” Yes, I did. The conductor on the train was none other than Dennis Butts, remarkable isn't it? The cab driver, James Magario, nearly hit a traffic cop. It was a close call but the cop, Joe Calusio, being a very understanding fellow, let us off easy because he remembered me from his third period physics class. When I finally got to the hotel, and the doorman, Bill Giglotto, let me in, I gave my suitcases to the bellhop, Tom Dearden.” You certainly did have some unusual experiences. Say, who is that girl over there with all those jnen around her? Why it’s Judy Gillaspy! Say, Judy, come over here. I want to talk to you. How have you been?” I couldn’t be better!” Who are all of those men you brought with you, Judy?” Don't you recognize them? Everyone of my ex-husbands showed up for the reunion, isn’t that nice?” That's nice, Judy. I seem to recognize them. Are they all ’57ers?” They sure are! We'll begin with husband number one, Spencer Hager; number two, Charles Walker; number three, Paul Shup; number four, Ronnie Scaggs; number five, Melvin Koenig. I was just so thrilled to see them!” It was nice talking to you, Judy, I’ll see you after while. Now let's take a look at that good-looking group on the other side of the lobby. Let's see, there’s Ida Carkuff, who is now employed at Shaw's Garden watering plants with an eyedropper (a very tedious process) and next to her is Jack Body, who is now Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Salena Blandon, who is now squeezing lanolin from sheep’s wool, is busily talking to Gene Brombolich, who puts glue on the back of postage stamps. Next to them is Yvonne Brown, a noted fly swatter weaver, and Nancy Burroughs, who has won fame and a fortune by sending in Wheaties boxtops and winning valuable prizes. Bob Claus, a dramatic coach, seems to be interested in Nancy Coombs, who now operates a super Dairy Queen in Crossbones County,. Texas. Don Davin-roy, who is now ironing handkies in a Chinese laundry has his eye on Doris Deterding who fits sneaks into sneakers. That looks like a talkative group standing by the elevator. Let's find out who they are. Hello ladies, will you please tell our audience who you are and what you are now doing?” I'm Tony Bridges and I am an auto mechanic.” My name is Beverly Bright and I am a beautician at the Madame Pompodore’s Salon.” I’m a girl scout leader of my own troup and my name is Barbara DeVore.” I’m proud to say that I am an official time keeper for a drag strip. I am Darlene Elliott. My name is Carol Kuhn and I’m a store clerk.” After taking art for three years, I’m glad that I am finally able to put it into use by painting white stripes on the highways. My name is Norma Jones.” I have made good use of my musical ability because 1 am now a tamborine player for the Salvation Army. I am Kraig Juenger. You will remember me as Carol Short although that isn’t my name now. I am very happily married and occupy my time in various organizations. At the time, I am president of the Women’s Club for the development of bird watchers. I'm Rita Smith and although I don’t wear a bucket hat I am proud to say that 1 am a Red Cross social worker.” Those are very fine occupations, girls. I hate to leave such good company, but there seems to be a commotion over by the door. I'll have to go see what it is. Why it's Gary Norbury, better known as Little Caesar, head of the Chicago syndicate. He is well taken care of by his bodyguards: John Popov, Dave Domnick, Charlie Quarenghi, and Sandra Palecek, his moll (a notorious bank robber). They are headed for the cocktail lounge, let’s follow them.” This is quite a change in atmosphere. It certainly is crowded in here! Some of these people look very familiar. We’ll begin with the people sitting at the bar. There is Russell Beasley, a Cadillac dealer, talking to Harold Bush, who is now a stock broker on Wall Street. Sitting right next to them is Doris Cathers, who has spent the last ten years pricing Cadillacs and Ruth Adams (she collects donut holes). That gay divorcee, Pat Brider, is in the middle of a delightful conversation with Marilyn Butler, a fortune teller, and Nancy Momphard, who is now a dean at Rolla School of Mines. That guy sneaking around the back of the bar, talking to the barmaid, Mayleen Mezzano, is.that notorious bootlegger, Bill Lawrence.” Oh, wait a minute, here comes the floor show! Listen, the emcee, Ivorie Manning, is about to say something.” Good evening ladies and gentlemen! We have a wonderful program in store for you. Here is an outline of the evening's entertainment. First, we will present that well-known comedy team—Bob Radosevich and Elise Meier. Next, the singing sweethearts of the modern stage, Lawrence James and Sharon Phillips! Last but not least is our famed chorus line. They are from left to right: Julianna Hefferly, Carol Meadows, Janet Ninness, Norma Milam, Carla Miller, Lila Mousette, and the star of the chorus line, Joe Obcrto (better known as Jivin' Joe from Kokomo;. They will be accompanied by that great jazz combo, the Rinder Rares.” Their leader, Jerry Rinder, is very proud of this combo. They are from left to right: Marjorie Harrolle, Margie Matter, Phyllis Winner, Delbert Henderson, and Faye Taveggia. Now on with the show! And what a show it will be! Before it starts, let's see who else we recognize sitting at some of the tables. Over there talking to that beautiful cigarette girl, Delores Hayden, is Dennis Haig, who has gained fame as the center of the Chicago Bears. At the next table is none other than Kenny Waltermire. Kenny has become very rich as manager of a retreat for escaped convicts. Sitting with him is Irene Reynolds, who sells wigs to victims of Apache raids and Jerry Springer, raiser of Springer spaniels. Across from Jerry is Bob Phelps who deals in cards. Then there is Doris Stehl that famous artist who has just finished her latest masterpiece, The Lona Misa and Gary Nance, who has taken Elvis's place since he was drafted. He also sells used guitars on the side. Last but not least is the only American harem-keeper in existence, Ralph Haury. Yes sir, Ralph really knows how to live! Let's go to the opposite side of the room now and see who we can find. Why there's John Sorbic, raiser of over 20,000 pigeons, and Delores Peltz who supplies miniature tear bombs to the guests on This Is Your Life. Talking to them is Marilyn Lemons, the professional orange juice squeezer. Her date is Larry Giritz, a DDT bomb inspector. Eyeing them is Shirley Epperson who is still just shopping around.” Then there's Erven Dellamano (better known as Nervie Ervie ) who is now a Pepsi Cola dealer. Next to Erv is Bill Combs, the good humor man, and his date and lap-sitting secretary, Delores Cooper. Say, there seems to be some excitement in the lobby. Let's go see what it is. Why it's a pair of movie stars, Vivian Schuck and Clifford Anderson. Cliff's latest picture is What Atomic Energy Means to Guinea Pigs.” Viv is now starring in The Janitor Did It.” They are surrounded by a group of autograph hounds. In this group I recognize Wilma Jean Rita Dorothy Bauer, a Dior model; Joyce Falline, a peddler of Curry Combs for wooly worms; Kay Ives, advertiser for non-smear lipstick; Burlene Mater-ka, manager of an open-air theatre; and Sue Miranda, inventor of Miranda’s handy-dandy corn plasters. The excitement seems to have calmed down now so I think I'll go up to the main ballroom where these '57ers are holding their biggest celebration party. This is your interviewer back with you again after a brief trip up here on the elevator. In case you didn't know—Bill Meni is employed at this hotel as the elevator operator. On the elevator with us was Darlene Allen who oils squeaks in mice. Crowded next to her was Thurman Bertoieit, a bicycle dealer, and Terry Bethel, a jockey. He is known to the racing fans as Wilt the Stilt who rides Midge the Mare. Squeezed in next to him are Vivian Brightman, a corsetier; June Brooks who puts peanuts in the holes in peanut brittle; and Don Conway who sells sawed-off shotguns to despondent teenagers. Pardon me while I check my hat. Why Mary Mas-sander, I didn't know that you were a hat check girl here! How have you been?” Oh, I've been just fine. Did you see that group who just came over from their bus drivers' convention? There’s Shirley Bendel, operator of Bendel's Bus Lines to East St. Louis; then there's Marge Decrevel, the owner of Marvelous Marge's Van Lines; Charles Snow, who drives a bus for Nancy Mooney (between SIU and Collinsville); and Evelyn Johnson, who drives a bus route to Assumption from C.H.S.” Hot-seat? No, I haven't seen them but I do see that group over by the punch bowl. Rich Edwards, a siren blower for prison breaks is standing next to Martha Massa who is finally finishing out her senior year at SIU. Next to them are Kathy Peradotti who squeezes toothpaste back into the tubes; Doris Sponeman, manager of the largest Newberry's Dime Store in the world; Tom Welch, a bail jumper; Tom Jackson, a librarian; and Jeanne Quatto, his chief comic book duster. With them are June Juelfs who is still star typist for the Kahokian; Kathryn Eckart, who cleans and dresses ostriches; and Rebecca Key, the discoverer of an ulcer cure for soft drink addicts.” Serving them punch are Bob McGuire, Gloria Lutz, and Phillip Koch. They are all honorary members of the Punch Dippers Local No. 235894. Over by the door, getting their dance programs from Jo Ann Poneta, are Versey Hayes, a member of the Globe Trotters; Phyllis Heitkamp, our first woman president; Tracy Wilhoit, inventor of Dr. Wilhoit’s false teeth powder for toothless teenagers; Rich bring ’em back alive” Tiemann, hunter in the backwoods of Flora Place; Earl Scharf, dentist; and Carl Hillier; a professional dishwasher. Now looking out onto the dance floor we see some real crazy rugcutters. They are Harry Archer, the all-American center, with Lane Brown, an operator of a race track for horney toads; Jon Beamer (who puts tips on shoe laces) dancing with Barbara Zid, inventor of a tranquilizer for panicked people; Bob Bollinger, a dance instructor, trying out some new steps with Carol Wurtz, a demonstrator of the latest hair styles; and Bob Britton, manager of Miner's Theater, two-stepping with Marilyn West, a hot-rivet handler in Alvarez's bibbed blue jean factory. As the orchestra, led by Rosemarie Fournie, and consisting of Earline Baker, Jerry Barnett, Wilma Agnes Bauer, Gerald Goodpasture, Gary Haskell (who was imported from France with his English horn), Phyllis Raj-kowski, Sharon Preloger, Don Weckman, Kenny Zike, Carol Elliott, Mary Szakacsi, Beth Hoyer, Dottie Seward, and Gloria Scheurer strikes up the beat to Third Street Dishrag Mambo; we notice some true South American rhythm lovers dancing. They are Rose Marie Buffo, cultivator of roses for Spanish dancers, with Gary Weseman who is taking Tarzan’s place in the movies; Eddie Lewis, now taking Jerry's place in the Martin and Lewis team, Rock'em! with Letty Rinder, star-reporter for the Possum Holler Times; Jack Hammond, monkey trainer, with Glory Steiner, caretaker of the St. Louis Zoo; and Wayne Hutchins, collector of Marilyn Monroe postcards, dancing with Jane Tibbals (you all will remember her as the girl voted most likely not to succeed). A noisy little crowd over in the corner seem to be telling old war stories. They are Frank Joachimstahler, first sergeant in the Marines; George Ramatowski, a five-star general; and Charles Wood, Commander of Army Occupations in Caseyville. In another corner are Don Deppe, owner of Deppe’s Orange Plantation (one tree); Don Dickerson, illustrator for MAD; Kay Maniscalli, a lumberjack; Earle Neubauer, Ben Hogan of his day; Joan Sendejas, now Mrs. Dennis Butts; and Larry Welle, who puts TCP in gasoline. The floor is now being cleared for the floor show. I heard by way of the grapevine that the Preston Hotel is proud to feature in their floor show, Tim Bennett and Sue Tevebaugh doing a duet selection from Swan Lake. This graceful couple has danced its way to fame from Chattanooga to Chinatown. While the floor show is on, I think I will take a stroll out into the hall and see if I can see anyone else I know. Oh, its crowded out here! Say, there’s Jim Gonzales, publisher of Speedy Gonzales’s Joke Book. Hes talking to Bill Einfeldt, inventor of jet propelled lawn mowers; and Marena Gray, the national winner of all G.A.A. awards. Next to them are Harold Hankins, optometrist; Judy Hecht, motorcycle trick rider; and Dan Krietemeyer, the guy who sells Dandy Dan’s Firewater (straight from the reservation). That trio eavesdropping over there consists of Marie Perfetti, owner of a three-block carport for real drive-in service; Judy Schiller, a foreman on a construction job in California; and Bill Onofrey, a flower arranger. That guy busily working over there, cleaning up a broken glass, is Arthur Staden, the hotel janitor. Looking on are a group of critical teachers. They are as follows: Fred Arnold, English teacher; Ermel Bettorf, gym teacher; Caron Coombs, Sunday School teacher; Carole Wilson, Mary Rogers, and Ruth Ann Robinson. Before we leave the ballroom let’s take another look at the couples dancing. There is Walter Stephens with Charlene McGhee; Bob Cuiferi (he makes his living selling five-cent bags of sawdust on the street) dancing with Claudine Tanner, a manager of Slenderclla Salons; Dennis Eberle, owner of a Peter Pan School, with Nancy Warfield who writes a love-lorn column in the Country Gentleman magazine; Dave Tottleben who maintains a drag-strip for ladies over eighty, dancing with Carolyn Schimkus, a reknown yodler; Manuel Gutierez, a probation officer for juvenile delinquents, with Fran Revelle, a funeral director; Jim Heidenreich, a National League umpire, with Judy Wrigley, an artist’s model. Some more couples on this crowded floor are Mary Grace Hohn, a merry-go-round operator, dancing with Ron Von Seng, an athletic coach; Roger Kassing, a manager of a rest home for pygmies in the Belgian Congo, with Helen Seago, the head dean in a young women's finishing school; Connie Leskera who cleans white walled tires for Bitzer Motors dancing with Jim Lindsey, a radio announcer; Ronald Lucas, an eagle stamp book peddler, with Mary McCann who makes giant sized lipsticks for a Ubangi tribe; Walter Ogle, the new governor of Illinois, with Mary Ellen O'Hara who puts mercurochrome on band-aids; Betty Onofrey who has just replaced Miss Francis on Ding Dong School dancing with Merle Owens, a peddler of NO-DOZE pills; Albert Picchioldi, fish and wildlife specialist, with Jean Prachar who is now selling Pine Lake mineral water; Ray Ruder, an interior decorator, with Sandra Smith, the Duchess of Baileyonia; and Bob Vetter, the mad scientist who discovered a wonderful no-itch powder, cutting a rug with Jeanne Adams, none other than the Prince of Monaco’s second wife. It’s getting late now so we better get back down to the lobby. Here we are, back in the lobby again. Let's see who those people are who are in such a hurry to leave. That’s Clifford Caldwell, the mayor of Hollywood Heights, talking to the desk clerk, Norman Launhardt. Waiting in line are Beverly Burbes and Donna Burris (a tight-rope walking team), Betty Cavaletti, publisher of standardized gyp sheets; Lloyd Cummins (otherwise known as Gypsy Joe); and Jodee Devorak, a devoted missionary in Calcutta. Folks it’s about time to sign off but as the cameras travel around the lobby, maybe you can see some other old friends. Those people over there waving at you are Bob Logsdon, inventor of squealless tires for jeeps; Rich McCormick, that well-loved Demolay Dad; Judy McDonnell, a plumber, very prosperous; Linda O’Connor, a hubcap saleslady. Irving Oliver, a tree surgeon; James Perkins, a noted opera star; Kenny Powell, a crooked (pardon the expression) politician; and Bill Smith, an advertiser for Charles Atlas. The people reclining on the soft chairs over there are John Fraunfelder, a trouble-shooter for the Department of Defense; Myron Grizio who is an cm-balmer; Bill Hanratty, a manager of a Henna-rinse factory; Bruce Hays, a superintendent of schools; Alice Lott, a professional jacks player; John Macari, owner of a big resort on Canteen Creek; Bill O’Rourke, a toymaker; Jim Soehlke, a chicken dentist; and Terry Taylor who is a one-man band in the Greasy Spoon restaurant. ’’Well, we hope you enjoyed our telecast of the reunion of the Class of ’57 of Collinsville High School. In our freshman and sophomore years we wholeheartedly entered every phase of high school and were very successful, although we still stood in the shadows of the upper classmen. But in this, our junior year, we have begun to steal some of the spotlight, with our members excelling in every form of school life: scholastic, extra-curricular, and athletics. Our beautiful prom and coronation will never be forgotten. And for our representative in this year's coronation, we made the wise choice of one of the serenely beautiful maidens of our tribe. Miss Judy Machinsky. We have willingly supported our class and school in everything that they have undertaken and we are sure that the heap big class of '58 will always be remembered for our hard work and school spirit. unior The Junior Executive Board was composed of five squaws and five braves, who were chosen by the junior class. They have been very busy making heap big plans and working hard to complete them successfully. Our coronation and prom were among the most beautiful ever seen. In succession they disposed of Gillespie, Granite City, Assumption, Edwardsville and Alton. Next came their disappointing loss to East St. Louis. They rebounded to batter Belleville and maul Madison in the season's finest games. Displaying a terrific defense, the Kahoks did not allow a point scored against them at home. Co-captains of this team were Tom Jackson, Bob Vetter and Harold Hankins. Among Tom's grid honors were being elected Prep Player, All-State End, and Most Valuable Player. Bob Vetter, guard, led the team in defense. His jarring tackles and timely blocks added to his spirit. Harold Hankins, halfback, used his speed and cutting to gain yardage and was also Prep Player, The ends were Erv Dellamano and Tim Bennett, two glue-fingered receivers, whose catches were always timely. Occupying line positions were tackles Larry Giritz, George Ramatowski, and Carl Hillier, and guard Rich Edwards. All will be missed. Halfbacks, John Popov and Jim Soehlke, were consistent ground gainers. Another great Kahok eleven! The brains behind the Kahoks were Coach Fletcher, assisted by Coaches Davisson, Weber, and Swaby. Coach Davisson worked with the Junior Varsity, Weber, the back-field, and Swaby, the Freshman Squad.
