The theme Focuses attention on the moderne motifs which com- pletely surround us in today's world. The im- pressionistic designs and abstract drawings scattered throughout the book have been created to interpret the various phases of school life. The trend toward modernistic design is be Comi ng popular in every respect: therefore, we have chosen this strangely different theme to enhance the Kahokian this year. 5 I X Brief breather oh, thos 14 'W Be proud, America, to bear The endless labor of the tree- To strike For Freedom everywhere And everywhere bear liberty. -MocLeish 7llIwuy.,,,'- MN ,-. ever-to-be forgotten 4 Swecting out c test 1. The passage of the bond issue for relieving the crowded conditions in our schools has en- abled these Far-sighted planners to de- velop a long range program to meet the anticipated needs ofour growing commun- ity. At the packed high school, wings are to be added to the north and to the south to permit additional class rooms, band facilities, and much needed gymnasium space for the supervised recreation program. On the elementary level, the ever- alert board members are promoting the building program in those areas which will be the Future growth areas of Collinsville. Unless one has actually served in the all too often thankless iob of memberof a board of educa- tion he could hardlyappreci- ate the problems that accom- pany the duty. There is no limit to the details that these already busy people are ex- pected to fit into their own very crowded schedules. MR. W. P. HALE For years a teacher of drafting and math classesg periodically, dean of boysg currently, assistant principal, teacher, counselor, The kind of person who will assume any responsibility and carry it through to perfection with no thought of recognition or reward, MISS OLGA S. QUERNHEIM Quietly and exactingly directs scores of students through the realities of the economic aspects of living - building a firm foundation of practical knowledge of values, costs, returns, budgeting, claims, etc. Truly prepares teen-agers for adult living with kindness, firmness, patience, and understanding, 10 s-.5 MISS HILDA STEINER Many of our Future Homemakers have their first experiences in plan- ning and preparing food under the practiced eye of Miss Steiner. Her ability affords vi tal tr a ining for future successful homemaking. MRS. A. W. SWANK Any girl aspiring to a Secretarial Position can f ac e a future with assurance if she hashad the benefit ofMrs. Swank's thorough training. She insists upon mastery of the subject and can claim a measure of many girls' successes in positions earned upon graduation. 11 ...and in The real backbone ofany school is the staff of teachers who do the least lauded essential work of preparing stu- dents in the basic skills n e e d e d for everyday living. Theirs are not the subiects that receive the adulation of the public or lend them- selves to themes for a school yearbook, but the rewards are only the i n n e r knowledge that boys and girls are to become successful adults because of their teachings. We accord them this s m all recognition in hope that it will part I y reward their efforts. The super -in all wage... Almost twenty years ago Mr. Darling began his work in Collinsville. Under his leadership as super- intendent, many additions and improvements have been made . His years of rich and varied experiences in dealing with the youth in the public schools qualify him as a dependable guide and sympathetic friend ofstudents ancl teachers. We of Collinsville Community Unit 10 are proud of our superinten- dent, Mr. D,K. Darling. I-,X ,,, ',. ' I the principal ascension tie .,. Eatin' again Sophomore Statistics We, the class ofnineteen hundred and fifty-eight, are proud of our many members and the good work they have accomplished. As freshmen, we chose sweet, petite Miss Jane Combs to represent our class as the third maid in the lovely coronation ofthe football queen. This year we made another very fine choice in selecting charming Miss Barbara McNurney as our sophomore representative in the court of our beautiful nineteen hundred and fifty-five Football queen. Two girls from our class were chosen by the student body for cheerleaders and many boys of our class have represented us ably in athletics. Many of our members are on the honor roll. Our class has succeeded very well in scholastic, athletic, and social activities. The past two years have been both profitable and enjoyable. All members ofthe class of fifty-eight are looking Forward to the remaining two years to be spent at Collinsville High. 'fx 5 I L-.J I W B nhart Barton Basola Adams, Barberis, Arth, Bennett, Becker. We got off to a rip-roaring start with the freshmen party given in our honor by the student council, then bent to our studies with a will. Our arrival swelled the membership of a great many school clubs and proved to one and all that even though we were little Freshmen, our interestin the school band, scholarship, and all extra-curriculars is as great as that ofthe three classes previous to ours. A num- ber of our members are interested in sports, and though they lack the experience needed For the varsity squads, they will make names for themselves in the near future. The third maid of honor for the football coronation was pretty, po i s ed Miss JoAnn Marco. She appeared in shrimp pink bouffantskirted for- mal and was escorted by Clifford Hayes. A hope for the future is that everyone will agree that our class is the most. Freshmen :IG of ' ll I' X Bcrlking baby . Q' The new look! BACK ROW: Bauer, Basola, Breckenridge, R.
