m SCHOOL In the earlier days of a nobleman's education, reading and writing were regarded as effeminate, but in the later times the nobles became increasingly literate. By the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries many began to pride themselves on their patronage of learning. The standards of education have been elevated to such an extent that today the education of the youth is foremost in the minds of everyone. 6
