JUDY AHRING Co-Editors GERDA LEYSER GANT REDMON Business Manager VOLUME 28 Collinsville, Illinois June, 1955 © Kc The nineteen hundred fifty-five Kahokian is designed to interpret the modern scene in terms of the medieval period. This theme was selected because of its appropriateness to the dedication. In reality there is little relationship between modern society and the feudalism of the Middle Ages, but literary license has enabled us to adapt our theme. The aim of this Kahokian is to make a lasting record for you. Introduction Foreword Contents . Dedication . Administration Faculty . Classes . Seniors Juniors Sophomores , Freshmen Clubs . By the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries many began to pride themselves on their patronage of learning. The standards of education have been elevated to such an extent that today the education of the youth is foremost in the minds of everyone. 6 STM Judy Ahring. Gerda Leyser . . . It is the responsibility of this group to maintain adequate and modern educational facilities for the youth of the school district. We, of the Kahokian staff, commend the Board of Education for a job well done. 8 SUCTION E. G. HOLZWEG B. H. WITTE L. E. SUTTON E. J. MUELLER D. K. DARLING J. FLAGG It is with greatest pleasure that we dedicate the Kahokian of nineteen hundred fifty-five to a most deserving member of our faculty, Mrs. Mary Hopkins Pinkel. Admired for her vivaciousness, this well-read instructor has won a permanent place in the heart of i Collinsville High School. We dedicate this volume to her in token of appreciation of her tireless efforts to create well-informed citizens. ADMINISTRATION The high standards that are maintained by Collinsville High School can be attributed to our efficient and conscientious superintendent, Mr, D. K. Darling. Recognized for his notable administrative ability, Mr. Darling has been a promoter of Collinsville's educational system for many years. We take this opportunity to pay tribute to our fine superintendent of schools. Mr. J. Paul Gardner, who is completing his fourth year as principal of Collinsville High School, has worked conscientiously in order to keep Collinsville High a smooth-running organisation. He has done an excellent job of performing the million and one duties connected with running a large, modern high school. Because our welfare and the welfare of our school is his prime consideration, we, the student body of Collinsville High, owe Mr. Gardner many thanks. MR. J. PAUL GARDNER, Principal Cicero, the great Roman orator, once said, Not only is there an art in knowing a thing, but also a certain art in teaching it. We believe that the certain art spoken of by Cicero is possessed by every man and woman of our faculty. Through their patience and understanding they have guided and counseled us so that we might become truthloving, upright citizens of the community. They not only fulfill their multitude of obligations as instructors, but they also willingly sponsor our extra-curricular activities in which capacity they help develop our social graces and instill in us the fundamental concepts of good sportsmanship, co-operation, and the true values of leadership. We know that we are indeed fortunate to have such a prudent staff to instruct us. We hope that in the future they will be proud of our achievements. From the most bewildered freshman to the most experienced senior, all endeavor to gain the most for themselves and their school through both scholastic and athletic achievements. R We entered Collinsville High as the biggest class ever, and our big class has done many big things. Some of those things will be forgotten, but we will never forget our beautiful coronation and our equally lovely prom, which we presented last year with the help of our wonderful and willing sponsors, Miss Crowley and Miss Linder. Our leaders have led the entire student body in several worthwhile projects, and we sincerely hope that our presence here, as the class of '55, will have been for the good of the school as well as benefiting us. Last year we chose Miss Jean Prachar as fourth maid in the coronation of the football queen. This year we again made a very fine choice in selecting Miss Judy McDonnell as our representative for the coronation of the 1954-55 queen. Two others of whom we are proud are Miss Sharon Phillips, chosen last year as Princess Kahok, and Chief Kahok Dan Krietemeyer. We are very pleased, also, to be represented in athletics by Terry Bethel, Tracy Wilhoit, Bill Combs, Jim Soehlke, and Tom Jackson. Some of our scholastic leaders are (Cont. on page 56) Sofi6a twie Zxzcutlve Zoand Jane Tibbals, Betty Cavaletti, Sandra Smith, Vivian Googins, and James Magario. We feel that this year was extremely successful under the most capable guidance of Mrs. Bottlemy and Mrs. Buel, who replaced the sponsor of our freshman year, Mrs. Pirtle. We owe great thanks for the fine counseling of these three ladies. The past two years have been both pleasant and profitable for everyone of us. All of the members of the class of nineteen fifty-seven are looking forward eagerly to the remaining two years that we shall be spending at our beloved Collinsville High School. Our class got off to a colorful start by attending the enjoyable party, given for us by the student council. Next, we elected our class executive board, which consists of Ronnie Buel, president; Jim Juenger, vice-president; Kay Redmon, secretary; and Joy Pat Baker, treasurer. A number of our members were represented on the honor roll and several are interested in sports. Although they are a bit young to be on any of the varsity squads, with their determination, they will show much improvement in the future. In the coronation of our beautiful queen, our (Cont. on page 64) 'pn iAtttfut Sxecutive Soviet class was represented by the sweet, petite Jane Combs. Of course our class could not have been as successful as we were without the help of our truly great and wonderful sponsors, Miss Richter and Mr. Barbush. Their advice and guidance was gratefully accepted and appreciated by the class. We hope that in the future years at Collinsville High School we can bring honor to the school as the classes before us have done. In closing we might add that having done well in band, chorus, athletics, and as scholars, we have lived up to the expectations of the faculty and others concerned. BACK ROW: Baker. Coaches Davisson, Fletcher, Paul Squad, The Kahok team of 1954 - 1955 will be long remembered as one of the all time great Collinsville teams. This is evidenced by their seven wins in nine games and their consistent ground and air attack. Much of the success of Coach Fletcher's crew is due to the linemen who blocked for our brilliant runners. Bob's defensive ability and jumpshot made him an all-stater . Don Cooper was the small of the Kahoks. Although only five eight, Don was the playmaker and he was indispensable. Jack McWhirter--Mac's tremendous out-court jumpshots gave the Kahoks their deadly trio: Mac, Bobby, and Terry. Dave Folmer--Big Dave made the team click. Few can forget his greatest games against Belleville and Tigers. Jim Flagg-- Boris was prepared to come off the bench whenever called. He won the Dupo game for the Kahoks. The Collinsville nine tried their best but could never seem to combine the essentials of baseball: timely hitting with good pitching. The Collinsville outfit always seamed to have one of the other, but never the both. mmii 111 Von Seng, Edwards, Keel, Hicks, Haley. Kramer, Scharf, Cook This was the second season for golf as an organized sport at Collinsville High School. Under Coach Mel Paul the team was very successful in winning five out of the seven meets which they participated in. The Kahoks finished in third place at the district meet. The outlook for future squads is bright. I I I I GOLF 112 BACK ROW: Perfetti, Palmer, Shanklin, Mr. Grieve, Hess, McWhirter, Sullivan. FRONT ROW: Baker, Niebauer, Wendler, Layher, Sudbring. Under their new coach, Mr. A1 Grieve, this tennis squad rose to new heights last season. The Kahoks took ten matches out of eleven and finished third in the district meet. Shanklin was the single team member to go to State. Key players were as follows: McWhirter, Sudbring, Sullivan, Palmer, and Hess. TENNIS 113 (tyeenleaclvii., These winsome Indian maidens are the spark that sets the machinery of athletic teams in motion. FRONT ROW; Edward, Elliot, Cooper, Schaulat, Sonnenberg, Serre, Thomas, Stennett, McDonnell, Meadows. Captain Harold West, probably the best runner in this area, carried the, load of the Kahoks last year. His great effort was not enough to lead the Kahoks to many victories because Coach Vergil Fletcher's squad just didn't have depth. Coach Fletcher hopes, however, of Kahok victories in the future. TUCK 115 H Within the next few pages of this Kahokian, we are presenting some of the outstanding events of the past year. Featured in this section are the football queen and her court, the senior boy and girl selected to receive the S. A. R. and D. A. R. awards in recognition of their fine citizenship, the students chosen as the most ideal seniors, and Edith Boehm, our German exchange student, who came to us this year. THE CHKOIUTIOT On the evening of November 26, one of the most important events in the school year took place - the coronation of the football queen and her court of four, a representative from each class, lovely maids. First of the royal court to appear was the retiring queen, Miss Dodey Price. The Maids of Honor, attired in beautiful gowns of pastel shades were next escorted to their places as ladies-in-waiting to the queen. As each one approached the throne, escorted by a member of the football squad, she was received with obvious approval. The last fanfare was blown,- and all eagerly awaited the entrance of the Football Queen of 1954-55, Miss Judy Ahring. Lovely Miss Ahring, wearing an exquisite gown of white tulle, was escorted to the throne by Mr. Robert Henry to receive her crown. Judy was a truly beautiful queen and greatly deserved the honor. We are all proud of such an outstanding court! Miss Judy Ahring FOOTBALL QUEEN - 1954-55 119 Judy and Bob Dodey and Roland Jane and Wayne Judy and Gant Miss Kay Logsdon Miss Kathleen Campbell Kathy and Doug Miss Judy McDonnell Miss Jane Combs Kay and Duke Susie and Mike The calendar is again turned back to medieval times to present the following court of ladies and lords. Our court is a special one, made up of the ideal menbers of the senior class. These deserving members, having earned the honor by outstanding work and service to the school, were chosen in a school-wide election. It is only proper that we pay tribute to them and officially gave them their title of lady or lord. Don't you agree that they represent the senior class in a splendid fashion? 122 A zdie t e Tttcutwi Margie Bauer 123 Dan Bode 124 Lois Welch 125 Duke Bailey foad 4cvaid Judy Ahring Another top honor, the Good Citizenship Award, was bestowed upon Judy. Her untiring work, both scholastically and socially, her will to accept responsibility, and her eagerness to help in city projects certainly indicate that she is a good citizen of the school as well as of the community. 126 tcva'id Tom McDonnell It is a pleasure to add the Good Citizenship Award to Tom's long list of honors and achievements. A more deserving or worthy person does not exist. Any assignment, academic or otherwise, merits a job well done. Also, he has maintained an excellent scholastic record. We salute our good citizen. 127 CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS of 1955 M Studio § tdmtan'0 Carpeting 5)!
