F. C. KREIDER Everyone knows of the outstanding work Mr. Kreider has done with the Collinsville High School Rand. As an expression of our gratitude we dedicate the 1954 Kahokian to Mr. F. C. Kreider. Mr. Kreider’s musical career began at an early age. Since then he has made an extensive study of harmony, theory, composition, conducting, and arranging. In 1930 Mr. Kreider organized the C. H. S. Band. The band is nationally known, and it makes an annual tour. Let us all hope that Mr. Kreider will continue to do his fine work for many years. The Collinsville Township High School Band was organized September 29, 1930, with 41 members, and Mr. F. C. Kreider as Director. Its first appearance was in the American Legion Armistice Day Parade of that year. The high point of the early history of the Band was reached when, after participating in district contest as a Class D band at Centralia, 111., and as a Class B band at Hillsboro, 111., in 1932, it captured a first prize in the District contest in Collinsville in 1933. In 1937 the band won distinction by placing first in the district and state class “B” competition. In July of that year the band competed and won first place honors with a purse of $100 at the Fifth Division convention of the American Legion at Salem, III. In 1938 the Band won first in district, state and national contests at Elkhart, Ind. In 1940 it was sent direct to the National contest, which was held at Kansas City, Mo., and again received a first rating in Class “A”. Due to the fact that the band had won the national contests three times consecutively, it was barred from national competition; therefore the members of the band, Mr. Kreider and the Band Parents organization decided to make spring concert tours to various cities in the United States. In 1944 the band played to overflow audiences in Memphis, Tenn., and in 1945 and 1946 the concerts were given in Louisville, Ky. The 1946-1947 season saw the band leaving Collinsville at 3 A. M. in three specially chartered buses, with Fort Worth, Texas, as the destination. The city of New Orleans was the objective of the 1948 band trip, and, traveling by cHbrtered bus, the Band climaxed a successful year by spending a very profitable and enjoyable week in the Crescent City. In the spring of 1949 the band left for Duluth, Minn. Texas Christian University sponsored the band’s second successful trip to Fort Worth, Texas, in May, 1950. Two concerts and a band clinic for 125 schools, at T. C. U., were among the 14 concerts played. In April, 1951, the band was invited to make a second visit to New Orleans, La. Their concerts were received enthusiastically, especnjjly in schools where the 1948 tour was remembered. A record flood of the Missouri River at Omaha, Neb., in April, 1952, failed to mar the band’s enthusiastic reception in that city. On the third trip of the band to New Orleans, in 1953, ten concerts were played in the schools of New Orleans Parish. Conducted tours of an ocean liner and of the historical French Quarter and spectacular Botanical Gardens of the city were other high lights of the trip. Collinsville Community Unit No. 10 is extremely fortunate in having an administrator as capable as Mr. Darling. Mr. Darling’s career in Collinsville began in 1936. He began as an industrial arts teacher and coach at the junior high school. He then became principal of the Webster School and was then promoted to coach and principal of the high school. He soon advanced to the position of superintendent of 13 (Community lyjnit 10 the high school, and is now superintendent of Unit 10. His rapid promotion in the various positions of the school system indicates the enthusiasm lie has for his work. Because he is an excellent organizer he always finds time for smaller problems which might be overlooked by someone less efficient. We hope he will have even more success. 13 Mb. J. Paul Gardner In the comparatively short time Mr. Gardner has been at Collinsville High School he has introduced countless improvements which make the school operate more smoothly. He is continually striving for better student-faculty relations. Mr. Gardner has earned the respect and good will of the students. 14 c, ounseiors ! Our assistant principal and dean of boys, Mr. Hale has an understanding of the students which well qualifies him for the job. And he is very friendly. Miss Renfro, our dean of girls, is always willing to help the students. She works tirelessly for our benefit in all of our extra-curricular activities. For helpful advice, Albena can’t be beat. She has a knack of being able to answer almost any problem. Is neat and efficient. Albena Bilyeu Midge rates a “straight A” in our report. She is alert, active, admirable, agreeable, ambitious, appreciative, and attractive. 15 Mary Jane Barrows Robehta Baldridge HI Ernestine Bottlemy Prentice Cole -i Edna Marie Bare Roberta Baldridge, B. Heaven did a recompense as largely send: He gave to Misery (all he had) a tear, He gained from Heaven (’twas all he wished) a friend. No farther seek his merits to disclose. Or draw his frailties from their dread abode, (There they alike in trembling hope repose,) The bosom of his Father and his God. Thanks so much for my first flute —for saying, ‘Its up to you—and daring me to make it. “Please forgive me, sir, for being afraid for so long to express my appreciation and gratitude. Thanks for a share in one of life’s richest legacies. Your monument sits before you tonight as it has these many years, and it is a grand monument, for it has not only proud sight but exquisite sound, and that sound will never die. “Many fine men have made grand donations to our town and its schools, but in one word you gave as much and more than many. You gave us music. God bless and keep you always.” Raoul Tayon, Assistant Director of Band, University of Denver, Home of the Pioneer Band. 62 The Band has clone much to stimulate an interest in music at home and to win new friends for Collinsville abroad. Under the able leadership of Mr. F. C. Kreider it provides entertainment at the games as well as exceptional season concerts. The hand’s spring tours furnish an opportunity for it to he heard in many parts of the United States. The enthusiasm of the band’s officers and the parents association helps to supply the spark that makes this hard-working group one of the finest in the land. We at C. H. S. are justly proud of it, and we wish it continued success. This year the Choir Department concerts included the Christmas candlelight; February, American music; April, Easter; May, Spring; and March, the student-produced show, “College Daze.” The choirs assisted with the Christmas, Brotherhood, Easter and Mothers’ Day assemblies. They also sang on the Community Good Friday program and the Festival at Belleville. JIM PARKINSON Although Jim lacks size, his drive and determination made him a big man to opponents. HARVEY MAACK Though Harvey was hampered by injuries, he was always in the thick of the battle. WALLACE SMITH Wally was a true picture of a spirited player. He was very efficient as a speedy line-hacker. BOB PELLIN Bob, our senior co-captain, was bothered all year by a sprained ankle, and saw little action. CLARENCE KANTUREK Clarence handled the team very well, and had the will to win. Out of the fifty boys, however, only seven were speedy enough to earn letters. Senior letter winners were: Bill Keel and Al “Sheets” Barnes. The other five men were: McDonnell, Cooper, McWhirter, Geldbach and Britton. Collinsville entered 3 meets and won the same number. But in the district meet the Kahok thin-clads placed fifth. Since most of the bovs on the team were underclassmen, future Kahok squads should do well. 92 Coach Paul, haley. Rissi, Hanvey, Kramsr, Gaskill, Caialpa This was the first year for golf as an organized sport. Mr. Paul was very optimistic as he took charge of the unorganized activity. The season was highly successful, as the team entered se en dual meets and captured five of them. In a field of eleven schools, Collinsville finished third in the district meet at Belleville. Senior class letter winners were Jack Hanvey and Bill Rissi. Bob Catalpa and James Gaskill, freshmen, rounded out the letter-winners of the season. The prospect certainly looks bright for future C. H. S. golf teams. 93 The strategy-men of our perennially tough Kahok basketball team. Again, as in the past campaigns, they have turned out a comparatively good team. Redmon and Flagg Jim Flagg, a 6-3 junior, was relied upon to add the scoring punch which toppled over opponents. Jim’s rebounding and teriffic jump-shot were his main assets. Gant Redmon, 6-2, another junior, was used mostly for his rebounding ability. He was shifted to the outcourt in order to provide more height on the team. Both of these boys should improve next year. Don Cooper appealed to fans for his speed and dribbling ability — it’s good to know that he will be back. Ralph Sackett, a sophomore guard was always aggressive and impressive. 94 Jack McWhirter, a 5-9 junior, came around in the latter part of the season. He was a little fireball who supplemented Harvey Maack’s outcourt play. A1 Sonnenberg, 6 foot, was just a sophomore but proved that he was second to none when it came to drive and spirit.” His rebounding prowess helped the Kahoks in many games. The boys look forward to next year. Bob Schaulat, our star junior center, walked away with all scoring honors. “Bevo” Bethel, our great frosh, gives great hope for-the future. Under the able supervision of Coach Davisson, new mentor, the underclassmen were given a chance to show their wares. The record was not too impressive, as our “stars” stacked up three victories and nine defeats, hut pretty good for a team composed mostly of freshmen and sophomores playing senior teams. Outstanding player of the year was Junior Giacoletto, who won all three of our games. In district tournament the Kahoks lost to Madison, 1-0. BACK ROW Sonnenberg. Ohlendorf. Lawrence, Giacoletto, Kwedras 98 Under their new coach, Mr. Dcason, the tennis team expects to go far this season. Since we have inadequate facilities for this fine sport, it lias been somewhat forgotten in the past few years Nevertheless, the fellas still work hard to produce winning combinations. We of the Kahokian Staff wish the boys the best of luck in their efforts this Spring. With the fine veterans of last year’s squad. Coach Deason has a fine nucleus around which he can build his group of young hopefuls into a well organized, highly polished team. BACK ROW: Wendler, Palmer, Sudbring, Eckart, Shanklin, McWhirter, Coach Deason FRONT ROW: Sullivan, Donna, Perfetti, Medder, Tosi, Wood 99 eer s' Who does not know these four girls? Without them the spirit of our athletic contests would be definitely less pronounced. They are on hand to direct the concerted lung-power of the student sports fans, and their enthusiasm is so contagious that even the most staid observer is compelled to join in cheers. We salute them for their consistent good will and attitudes of sportsmanship. Sandra Beasley, Connie Schade, Joann Blankenship, Lois Welch 100 During the past couple of years, the interest in track at C. H. S. has been at a low ebb. The team of 52-53 was not rewarded with a very impressive record. Its lone victory was over Cahokia. Although the senior division lacked talent, the junior division showed hope for the future years at C. H. S. The weight division seems to dominate the successful list. Sprinters seem to be scarce, with a few exceptions. BACK ROW: Coach Fletcher, D. bonnenberg, Pellm, West, Lorenz. Redmon, Cooper, Meier, Elliott, Urban, Donna, Kuechle, Richardson, Hayes, Walters. As the ceremony began, two candlelighters appeared in pastel shades of yellow and aqua. After the entrance of this year’s football squad, the retiring queen. Miss Georgia Karnages, returned to the throne escorted by co-captain Mr. Bob Pellin. She was followed by the first maid to the 1953-54 queen. Miss Jean Prachar, escorted by Mr. Harvey Maack. Miss Prachar’s gown consisted of ruffle upon ruffle of pale green net. The second maid, dressed in pale blue, was Miss Pat Guinzy, escorted by Mr. Jim Parkinson. In a mist of pink net the third maid, Miss Marcia Russell, approached the throne escorted by Mr. Clarence Kan-turek. Miss Pat Bettonville, as special maid and representative of the senior class, wore a lovely shade of orchid and was escorted by Mr. Jack Lawrence. At last the long awaited entrance of the Football Queen of the 1953-54 season was made. Wearing the traditional white gown, Miss Dodey Price moved to the throne for her crowning, escorted by co-captain, Mr. Johndavid Jones. All hail to the queen and to her most delightful court! 104 105 nville Special Maid The rising popularity of Julius RaRosa among the student body caused the Kahokian staff to ask his aid in making our musical edition a great success. Mr. LaRosa accepted in his own shy manner, and the staff members made plans. Each of you voted for your choice of the prettiest girl in your class. Each winner had a glamor photograph made, and these were sent to Mr. LaRosa. He willingly gave the time to select the girl he considered most attractive. We present her-the Kahokian Queen of 1953-54 and her court. iOS Tno picture joi rake for in me 109 egg4 voss ey Second Maid R o e Third Maid This is in honor and appreciation of a young man who has literally danced his way into the hearts of everyone who has seen him — our own Ronnie Medder. Ronnie has become quite famous in his four years as Chief Kahok through long hours of practice. Perfection is what Ronnie has been striving for, and will continue to strive for as long as he can learn more of the Indian dances. Ronnie has been dancing for five years, and in that time he has acquired a broad knowledge of authentic Indian dances. Visiting the Indian villages in the old Southwest has become one of Ronnie’s greatest pleasures. This is Ronnie’s last year at C. H. S., but his memory will remain here for many years to come. 113 CjOO cl C it i zenullify This year’s GOOD CITIZENSHIP GIRL, Dodey Price, has a long record of outstanding school achievements. Besides maintaining a good scholastic average, Dodey has found time to participate in many activities. Her leadership has brought her offices in almost all of the organizations to which she belongs. Her interest in politics and government made her a natural for Collinsville’s representative to the Girls’ State last summer. 114 Bob Sudbiunc The Class of 1954 has chosen Bob Sudbring as GOOD CITIZENSHIP BOY. We all feel that Bob has earned this honor. In his four years at C. H. S. he has worked industriously for the benefit of others without looking for any personal glory. This year as the Senior Class President, he has again shown that he knows how to do a job well. To us Bob is a shining example of a really good citizen, one who does not disregard his responsibilities. 115 1. Jam session 2. All’s clear 3. Just hanging around 4. Knotty problems 5.
