OUR AMERICAN HERITAGE Foreword During the years of free education, the American school system has advanced until it now trains all of us as future citizens of the United States. The clubs—the classes—the sports—they all help us to learn the American democratic way of life. All of us probably will remember this year at school, but the seniors will remember it best because it is their graduation year—the year they have been looking forward to. Those who have learned their lesson of democracy well today, will become the successful citizens of tomorrow. So we hope that these seniors will always look back with pride and with pleasure on their days at Collinsville High School. 4 Contents TITLE PAGE 2 FOREWORD 4 CONTENTS 5 BOARD OF EDUCATION 6 DEDICATION 8 ADMINISTRATION 10 Deans 12 Office Staff 13 FACULTY 14 CLASSES 24 Senior Class 26 Junior Class 44 Sophomore Class 50 Freshman Class 5 8 CLUBS 64 SPORTS 90 FEATURES 104 5 These are citizens selected by the votes of fellow citizens for the all-important job of formulating policy for one of the biggest businesses in our land—our schools. These members of our high school staff are responsible for transforming simple fare into palatable dishes of limitless variety and goodness. Their work day begins early so that when our two lunch periods arrive at 11 and 12 o’clock they are ready to set before each of us an array of good food to appeal to all tastes and satisfy caloric counts. We take this opportunity to express our appreciation to them. ☆ 22 Custodians Se jitneyer, Cunningham, Lange, Collins, Turuchek, Cuff Among our national traits, America numbers an urge for cleanliness and orderliness. Individually, we cannot all claim great credit for doing our share—but, collectively, we appreciate the job of these men of our staff who maintain our much-used buildings and their grounds. Without them our school could not have withstood its more than forty years of use and abuse and still present so respectable an appearance. We are grateful for the job they do so faithfully and well the whole year long. 23 Glasses 24 In this day of limitations on democracies, it is our privilege as citizens of this great land to attend the public schools and receive an education. Our training includes more than accumulated text-book facts—we discover truths for ourselves. We learn to cooperate with each other, and to mingle easily with people of many different environments. All of this we feel is preparation for adult living. Our high school makes no distinction among races and creeds and the student body is a congenial collection of many national origins working harmoniously. 25 ★ ★ ★ Ken Bud, Rex Thompson, Jack Hanvey, Frank Woodcock ☆ Senior Glass Offic :ers Rex Thompson President Kenneth Buel Vice-President Frank Woodcock Secretary Jack Hanvey Treasurer Mrs. Ernestine Bottlemy, Mrs. Mary Rossio Sponsors 26 ★ ★★★★★★■A Senior Glass 71 Lstonj Our last year at C. H. S. has finally arrived and we look forward to graduation with thoughts of our high school days from the September we started as freshmen to the June we face as seniors. Our four years hold memories for each of us that we won’t forget soon, especially the particular ones that we get only in our high school days—cheering our teams on to victory and standing behind them in defeat; watching the always beautiful football coronations; and attending the special Junior-Senior prom. The days wouldn’t have been complete without the various club meetings after school and the projects planned by our favorite organizations. We are grateful to our administration and faculty for their able assistance in guiding us in our democratic way of life. We will always cherish the many friendships we discovered and the spirit shown us. We will miss C. H. It is not a farewell to teachers as they will continue to watch your progress and be proud of your achievements. Yours is not a farewell to classmates and friends because you will continue to maintain friendly interests and exchange occasional greetings though you may be many miles apart. Your diploma conveys best wishes from your community—it invites you to participate more fully and serve with a greater loyalty in those citizenship activities which need your assistance. Our wishes for you are rather bon voyage and au revoir, since your ship of state is embarking upon new horizons, with additional opportunities, and an extension of your experiences in your journey through life. Our earnest desires are that you utilize your achievements from high school and combine these with your abilities to make you successful in doing your part to make this a better world. — . Very soon they are going to take their places as citizens of the United States. What contribution will they make to the history of our country? Perhaps a look at their past achievements will help us in deciding what may be expected of them. As we glance at their record, we see 46 that this class is outstanding in all phases of regular school life. Although this Junior Class is comparatively small in number, it has a very good percentage on the Honor Roll each six weeks. Yet, using nothing but grades to determine the capabilities of the members of this class would be unfair. They take a very active part in all school activities. Many organizations at C. H. S. have elected Juniors to office. Many Junior boys and girls participate in various sports. The Junior Class Council, with the help of its capable sponsors, Miss Miller and Miss Baldridge, worked steadily to present the beautiful and truly successful Coronation. Last year, under the title of Freshmen, they had a very successful year but this year they outdid themselves. At the end of the first six weeks we had a considerably large number on the honor roll. Four sophomores, Bob Henry, Gant Redmon, Doug Elliot and Duke Bailey, saw some varsity action during football season. Next on the agenda of the activities of the • sophomores came the project of making money for the year, a home-made candy sale. This proved to be very well organized and helped boost our financial standings. Basketball season came before we knew it and 52 — Sop fo mo res Jim Flagg and Bob Schaulat were given several opportunities to show their talents in varsity games. Of course the better half of the Junior varsity, Donald Cooper, Ronnie Langreder, Tony Massa, Gant Redmon, David Folmer, and Jack McWhirter, are also proud to be members of the Sophomore Class. While on the subject of basketball you can’t forget that two of the senior cheerleaders, Lois Welch and JoAnn Blankenship were in the class of ’5 5. CLUBS 66 In our American schools, democracy is more than just an empty term whose characteristics we know but never get to apply prior to adulthood. Our clubs afford the opportunity for us to put democracy to work. We select our officers, we have the right of expression and accept or reject plans as the majority chooses. Each group has its adult sponsor to direct and encourage their efforts, but never to dictate or dominate. We feel that these organizations prepare us for good citizenship and introduce us to the obligations of leadership and service in adult society. 67 Cafeteria Staff ★ ★ Each day of the school year students storm the cafeteria in two shifts of almost five hundred each. The value of athletics is not lost even if one is not an active participant, because as a spectator one must be a good sport and fair judge. To us Americans, sports are big business and pastime; to high school athletes and the people of our community, the school athletic program is pleasure which oftimes leads to careers or scholarship opportunities in the higher educational institutions. 91 This year’s version of the football Kahoks compiled a very successful record of 6 wins and 3 losses. They had good all around strength and could cope with almost any situation that came up during the course of the season. They compiled several firsts during the season. The Kahoks were the first team to score against East Side. They also defeated two teams that were previously undefeated. The Kahoks have a fine nucleus of a team coming back next year and the outlook for the future is a very promising one for us. 102 Autographs 103 104 We Americans are an odd lot in that we profess great admiration for simplicity and equality. But, given a chance, we will make every effort to out-do ourselves in pomp and grandeur. We have a failing for singling out individuals to glorify and cherish. The compensating feature is that no one can force his way into our affections. We direct our admiration freely and whole-heartedly. Following, are pages to demonstrate our love of show” and individuals who have earned the admiration of their fellows. 105 Football Queen Miss Georgia Karnages 106 At eight-thirty in the evening on Saturday, November 22, a hushed crowd awaited the arrival of the football queen and her court of four lovely maidens. After the entrance of the retiring queen, Miss Joan Landwehr, the beautifully poised representatives of the four classes appeared in turn. Each was escorted by a member of the football squad, and each was received with obvious approval. Following the entry of the special maid of honor to the queen, all eyes eagerly awaited the arrival of Miss Georgia Karnages, reigning queen of the 1952-53 football season. This honor was one much deserved, for Georgia has been an outstanding citizen of our school since her freshman year. Her enthusiasm and friendly manner have won the admiration of the school and community. It is with great pleasure that we present the queen and her court of love and beauty. The honor of receiving the award far outshines any prize that may be given, but by their selection they become eligible for a one hundred dollar cash prize. It is with sincere pleasure that we salute these outstanding citizens of C. H. S. 111 The Coronation Ceremony Coronation Scene The Student Council this year inaugurated a program designed to awaken the students to the desirability of courtesy. After a two-week drive to promote an interest in good manners, students and faculty selected a boy and girl who were particularly thoughtful and considerate. Then at a big Valentine’s Day Dance the couple was crowned and the guests honored them with approving applause and shared the pleasure of their triumph at the dance.
