In other words, Mr. Snodgras left us to serve with the American Red Cross, whereupon Mr. Burroughs took over as principal. Before assuming the responsibility over us, Chief Burroughs was head of the town's grade schools. The Chief has the opinion that no detail is too insignificant to rate attention. Looka who we're callin pres this year, why it's that all-round guy, Al (better known as Moz ) Paoli. We picked a fine group of kids to help him, too. We call 'em Patty and Pete. Why? Cause that's their names, of course. Sports? Aw, you can't stop us guys. No, sir, we got a bunch of junior men a kickin' the pigskin. Let's see— was Lochmann, Petrait, and Moz . . Then we got Burroughs, Lochmann and Keller still in here a-passin' an' 40 • dodgin' the basketball. We're well represented in baseball and track . . . There's just no doubt about it, the junior class is full of school-love. Why, four of this school's cheerers are from this fine class. You just ought to hear Dottie, Mildred, Pete and Lee open their snoots in unison. Whot a noise! We're all a bunch of live wires, so how can I be expected to cover ALL the hi-lites? Scholastically and extra-curricularly (see I even make up words) we shine Why, when we graduate, half the old Band will be gone. But sports are right up our alley Our boys were really hep. Haven't more sophomore boys gone out for football than any other class? At this rate, we are bound to have the first team in the conference in a couple of years ! ! ! I could just rattle off about the boys individually, but there are too 44 many other things to tell. Besides football, we really have the cagers who are making names for themselves as the prospective champs of 1945! To give us a little advice now and then, which is sometimes necessary, we have Mrs. Pinkel and Miss White, our sponsors. We've got a good set of officers too — Dave Skelton is a first-rate president; Creepy Chas. is a super secretary-treasurer; and Betty Schoppe rates as vice president. Der-valis, Cassingham By the time all of those other classes finish with the superlatives, there isn't much left for us. Besides that, we're naturally modest, so our task is doubly tough. All we know is, we swarmed in here in hordes at the start of school last fall, and the place is gradually falling to our superior ability. We showed an odd shrewdness right off the bat, by choosing three competent leaders for the various offices. We hosted the year's outstanding first shindig and we can promise you a gloriously brilliant record in all phases of a school life before our days in this joint are over in 1946! Our guides know what the score is, too, so v e make wonderful music together. We got fellows and gals with talent in music; little guys, who are sure to grow, with fine athletic starts; and plenty of kids on each straight A list, and a number of outstanding beauties of the school are ours. I am confident that, with our youth, talents and ambition, we'll surpass all the so-called upper classes ! ! ! Besides, we've got a chance they've lost—3 years left to reach our goal. Chief among these are football and basketball; with a decided partiality for the latter. Nevertheless, each person can take part in so many others that there are no limitations or complaints. Q r id Warriors Who Fought Where's the ball? Mow 'im down Start Blockin' Soon after the call for footballers, Coach Dunn was yanked to the army's ranks. Allen Metternich, who knew the score from handling the featherweights, took over the varsity job. After he coached five games, losing 4 and winning 1, Bruno Bierman became the new man for the job when Mr. Metternich resigned to become school super at Bluffs, Illinois. Coach Bierman led the fellows to one long-to-be-remembered victory and (much as we hate to admit it) three regretted defeats. Although we can't exactly say we had a very successful year, we are convinced the boys did their best with so many different coaches. Although there was no campaign plan for the Lightweight Squad of Kahoks this year, because of the uncertainty about transportation and exchanging coaches, a promising group of determined scrappers saw the season pass without missing a scrimmage. There can be no doubt then that we surely have some seasoned material to form a first string from next fall. How we need 'em! Graduation clears the varsity of most of the veterans. A wish, with a prayer for the success of next year's gridders seems to be in order at this time, because this group can deliver the goods, if the Coaches situation can be stabilized. 66 To W SCORES Highland 6 Coll nsville 37 Webster Groves 12 Coll nsville 7 Belleville 37 Coll nsville 0 Granite City 14 Coll nsville 0 Alton 19 Coll nsville 0 Madison 0 Coll nsville 27 East St. Louis 27 Coll nsville 0 Wood River 19 Coll nsville 0 Edwardsville 13 Coll nsville 6 (14) Ashman, (10) Shelton (6) Simon, (12) Evers, (19) Schmidt, (1 1) Modglin, (22) Petrat, (5) Ward, (21) Donna, (20) Richter, (15) Mincke He s got y 'tm «Medicine man” Looka that kick Two man game A h, the others woke up Sept. 18. ASHMAN—Jerry had lots of speed, as well as the sense to use it well. MARTIN—Bill gave his best in every battle, was one of the best of guards. SCHMIDT—His playing was hindered most of the season by a bad knee. LENTZ—Jack's playing was cut early with an accident in Granite City. 69 Conference Champs The basketball season opened for us with a large veteran squad, under a new mentor's guidance, Coach Placek. Our team lost several games earlier in the season, partly on account of the absence of Captain Bob Richter, who was suffering a football injury. Near the middle of this season, our team began to resemble state champions. After displacing Belleville, then Wood River, the Kahoks got possession of leader-place in the conference, and in the end the trophy. This is the first conference trophy we won since 1937. Our quintet opened that regional tourney at Wood River, and, after laying out Western Military Academy, we scarcely grazed by those Granite City Warriors in that semi-final. In the finals, we were in competition with Wood River. And this game took us from the running. Our dream of the state championship was gone, but our thanks to a coach who had done such a marvelous job! In closing, we can't overlook Coach Bierman and his lightweights who'll be the future varsity players. Although we did not participate in so many games because of the lack of transportation, the experience gained is sure to benefit the future varsity. Back Row—Evers. Hoffman, Coach Placek.
