The work, a combination of leadership and cooperation, has resulted in this volume. If, through the sincere portrayal of events in the school year, the Kahokian is instrumental in stimulgtv ing memories of these happy days, the Staff will feel amply compen- sated for the effort set forth in production. 4 51 2 P -X 2- Wx if Eifmff M11 ' +25 lf-DM' ai Lg? T -V1 SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Just as the fish were biting best and the baseball season was at its peak, about two hundred and thirty-one reluctant youngsters were propelled into their freshman year at C. T. H. S. Why they were freshies was certainly a mystery to them. It seemed as if eight years of school should be enough to educate anyone. However after a few trying weeks, the new freshman quickly imitated the sophis- ticated air of the upper classman and then those freshies began making tracks. - Miss Eckart and Mr. Fletcher were the competent leaders that first dazed year. LaVern Pointer, Rolland Merrill and Bill'Allan made a flying start at ath- letics: and petite Miss Willet was chosen maid to nHer Majesty.n Nothing was going to hinder those determined freshies, not even scholarship, which was prov- ed by their straight 'AW records. Again at the best time of the year when school should be dismissed instead of begun, the 1951 freshmen came trouplng back to honor the sophomore section. This year there was no fog to engulf them, and they-entered the race for scholarship, athletics, and music with confidence and valor. Miss Renfro and Mr. Rommel were the class sponsors. This time Dorothy White paid homage to the 'Honored Queen.' The 1955 fall term at C. T. H. S. was awaited with eagerness and anxiety. The newly elected juniors had a premonition of an eventful and exciting year.and no one wanted to miss one bit of lt. nDulcy,n the junior play, was acclaimed an appropriate start. The juniors also had their share of football and basketball representatlvesg and at the close of the season, Dorris Hoge was elected the gridiron captain while Holland Merrill and La Vern Pointer were co-captains for the ensuing term of basketball. Another great honor was given the junior class when Lucille Holloway was chosen to reign as Queen of Love and Beauty during 1935-1934. l Again the beginning of another school term rolled around and one hundred twenty seniors returned to spend their last year at C. T. H. S. This time it was with reluctance that they observed the close of their last football and bas- ketball seasons. Jeanne Fletcher succeeded Lucille Holloway as the chosen Queen of Athletics. Because this was the last year of their high school career, the senior class decided to make it as gay as possibleg' consequently three senior get-to-gathers were given and attracted almost the entire class. The senior was WThe Boomerang,n and again the dramatic element of the class came forth its best. The senior sponsors were Miss Renfro and Mr. Hale, the best ever. e Slowly but surely the grandest year of all has drawn to a close. 'With annua1.sen1or hobo day and visit to Sw1ft's as parting events, the senior gang of 1955 turns toward June 5 with regret, hope, and a sincere fondness for Col- linsville Township High School. JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY Things Eg Remember: How small and insignificant we seemed on that bright September morn way back in '52, and with what pride we looked upon our first president, Vernon Edwards. Then too, recall our return to the home fold in '35 and the very success ful year we had under-the leadership of Olin Gilbert. Next came the gradual rise to our present learned estate of juniors, a year full of new and exciting events, with Vernon Bonn serving as president. There was our charming first maid of honor to the football queen, Fanny Hay Stephens, and those big, brawny cage and gridiron warriors, Mac Moore, Joe Garnero, Don Lyons, and Marino Ferarri, 'who literally nmowed them downn on the basketball floor and football field. . with chills and terror we recollect that triumph of dramatic art, 'Tiger House.' However, the very enthusiastic reception given it was highly enjoy- able. Recall also the junior c1ass.party, with the m stery surrounding the disappearance of three large and sumptuous cakes--what a burglary! Finally, the crowning event of the year, our farewell reception to the seniors, one which we hope they will remember with as much pleasure as we do. Eg 2225 Forward gg: Entering 1nto.our final year of a very pleasant chapter of our lives, in .to all the glory that goes with being a senior, preparatory to entrance into the wide world. --Betty Taggart IW IM' 9 IQJH 1' . f 1 1 ' a s 1 l ,ig 1 ,g I A44gg.3'.1.'ge.3i.3':LiiQ:Q:-,iavg' g --:- --:. -:- , , a -Q ii -, . 1. -'s.,,-, -- NR .ff 'F 'Q' KAH QQAN A ,4 2.-fA' N' W ffww, Q 1!l 1 ' ,J ff,-Af-f L 1A,,Q,A .L-:va-f- .-.- ,gfg,'l--fV-:-31:- J- ,v... vvi., 1 C ,Mp 2' I 4 3 lykvafj ,:-f , I. T ' SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY On September, 1933, a group of two hundred six boys and girls enter- ed the portals of C. T. H. S. 'They formed the class of '57 and were en- tering upon their freshman year. The sponsors of the class, Misses Salel and McCall called a meeting of the freshmen and the following officers were elected: President, Ed- ward Eversg Vice President, Billy Meyer: Secretary, Harold Schroeppelg Treasurer, Ernest Brown. Wilma Rogers was chosen as freshman candidate for football queen. On October 27, the class of '57 held a masquerade Halloween party in the gymnasium, with games, an orchestra, and good refreshments helping to make this social affair a fine success. On September, 1954, the class of '57 again entered C. T. H. S., but this time under the role of sophomores, one hundred seventy-six strong. Within two weeks Miss Salel and Miss Davidson, the class sponsors, called a meeting of the class in the gymnasium. The following officers were cho- sen to guide the class through this school year: President, Clarence Brazisg Vice President, Bill Fields: Secretary, Edward Grafeg Treasurer, Donald Ward. Beverly Paul was elected as candidate for football queen. The sophomores held a splendid St. Valentine's Day party on February 14, 1955. Games and dancing in the gymnasium constituted the early part of the evening, and the party came to a close when refreshments were serv- ed in the cafeteria. The class of '57 had a fine representation in the athletic fields of the school. Numerous sophomores played on the football and basketball teams, while other won honor on the cinder track or the tennis courts. The class of '37 has always been well represented in the Student Coun oil. The class was honored when Edward Evers was elected president of that important body. Wilma Borsch, Eloise Pannell, and Hewitt Cravens were able to make straight UAH averages during their two years at school, and many other mem bers of the class had fine grade records. The members of the class of '37 have now reached the half-way point on their high school journey. They cherish many pleasant memories of the past two years and look forward to many more in the two years to come. We trust that all may be permitted to enjoy what the future has in store for us. --Hewitt Cravens M I I fts' ' ' Qll .ml N i '..'.' -.flgg 215.-if-' ' ...Qu-.,+ ,J-K , ma mw mgyx N : :, .. . , ' -- -' - f . gg' .-.- I , Abxvf- -lx - 'f'!',:.. 1-V4-L----,Jr 'LM -T I 1 c-' . Under the able direction of Miss Steiner and Mr. Monroe the fresh- men revived and regained their composure. To the sound of bugles we gathered in the auditorium and elected Walter Evers commander-in-chief, Lavern Kesslnger, colonel, KVice Pres- ident to.those not versed in the lingo of the armyb, and Carolina Bauer, lieutenant. The whole army spent a pleasant evening at a Halloween party. Mil- dred Pointer and Fred Kuhner were crowned King and Queen of Halloween. Vivacious Mildred Pointer was third maid of honor at the Football Queen Coronation. Those who deserve medals for valor against the battle of lessons are: Lydia Endrejatis, Winifred Lacquement, Elva Schunke, and Helen Waichekauckas. Besides the victors over their lessons there are those who excelled in athletics. James Graham, Leroy Mills, James Thomas, and Woodrow Wilson were our football players: and Walter Evers, Leo Killian, and Carl Gillespey were our basketball players. All during our freshman year we have battled with defeat and dis- couragementg but we have also had many pleasures, and we are marching into our sophomore year with high hopes. 4 --Anne Gardner iwj 4' l Qvv M4EiLQ?I? , 1 I . s- . - ' A F ' ' - ' 41 . nu' KAH KEAN wh ,, ' - ' -R. ' 1-:I ,,-F -N., FOOTBALL The 1954 football season was one of the best Collinsville has known for some time. Considering the disadvantage of our exceptionally light team competing with teams which were sometimes fifteen pounds heavier man for man,we were able to turn in a surprisingly good record for the season. This, of course, was highly influ- enced by Coach E.G. Struck's able gu1dance,and by a prevailing hard-fighting spir- it among the team itself. .' , We started out with a bang by defeating the powerful Roodhouse team, who ln- cidentally had won their preceding nineteen games over a period of three years by a score of 6-0. Outweighed and overpowered by sheer force of weight we were not beaten, but managed to gain a touchdown and to hold our lead for the rest of the 881116 o ' However, in our first conference game we did not-fare quite so well. Madl- son's aggregation was able to defeat us with a score of 20-O, by the spectacular play of their backfield. H Once down did not mean that we were to stay down. With the odds heartily against us we met the mam oth Granite City team, and by our passing and by our hard dru mlng line attack, we beat them into submission early in the third quar- ter and got our touchdown in the same period. The final score was in our favor 6-O The next three games were heart-breakers in every sense of the word. They were with East St. Louis, Alton, and Wood River. The games were all about the same, with the hard-fighting Collinsville team out doing its best but unable to surmount the gigantic odds of being outweighed. The final scores of these games were: East St.Louis-14, Collinsville-63 Alton-15, Collinsville-6: Wood River-8, Collinsville-O. Incidentally these were the Conference's strongest teams. In the last game of the season we came into our own. By a series of hard- driving line plunges we were able to demolish the Belleville line and turn in a final tally of 6-0 in Collinsvllle's favor. . As a whole our Collinsville team was a team of hard-fighting, clean-out fel- lows. Our players were fairly good in abilityg our captain, Dorris Hoga, was a- ble to gain All-Conference standing and our fullback, Walter Gerding, was named on .the second team. Malcolm 'Mac' Moore has been elected successor to Captain Hoga and we all ex- tend our sincerest wishes to him and his huskies for a most successful 1955 foot- ball season. Larson, were able by hard fighting and good, clean playing to turn in a record for the season which is characteristic of all Collins- ville basketball teams. Led by co-captains Pointer and Merrlll,' the boys played good basketball to the last minute. Collinsville lost only five games during the entire season, three of these being non-conference games. The Happy Warriors of Granite City were responsible for Collins- vllle's defeats in the Conference. By hard playing and precise basket-tosslng, Granite City won her games with Collinsville with too close a margin for comfort at any moment of the game. - The playing of Pointer and Merrill at forward posts and nsaltyn Fre1berg's playing at guard were an inspiration to the entire team. With Gerdlng as nSalty'sn running mate, Evers doing center duty, and Ziesel, Moore, Gauen, Reed, and Zukosky ably doing relief duty, the team was sufficiently manned. The invitational tournament held at Collinsville during the Xmas holidays was a big -s. success. Jersey-ville, East St. Louis, and Granite City fell victims to Col11nsv11le's attack, enabling the Kahoks to win the tournament. Thelma Euno SPODBOI' eeoeloeeoc M153 Krug Forty-six freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior girls enrolled in the Girls' Hand- craft Club last fall. Since there was no available meeting place to accomodate such a large group of girls, two clubs were formed. One club chose the name of an Indian tribe, the Susquehannasg the other decided to be known as the Nimblefingers. The first project was soap carving. Some of the girls proved quite adept at this unfamiliar yet interesting taskg on the other hand, several mothers were presented with some unexpected and peculiarly shaped soap chips. The next project was the making of a Christmas gift, Most of the girls chose to make an embroidered linen picture. Before the Christmas holidays both the Nimblefingers and the Susquehannas had a gift exchange, games, and neats.' After Christmas the Nimblefingers made laundry bags and the Susquehannas learned to crochet. Because of the serious illness of the sponsor, no other projects were undertaken by either group and the club period was spent in group enterta iriment . . lbw 1, M Wie' 'l f' ' ' , - 5. ..-:- H .. . me I ---'65 P Vi KAH KEAN .f W n H f'i V 'N If 'JQC 'Y S fXX,-sf' I X N -.-Q aes-- J, NL-:asia -,..1wff., a.a'.--,,5 , gl BACK ROW: Carl Reed, Lucille MoLanaha.n, Olin Gilbert, Elizabeth Sherman, Clifford Kirsch, Evelyn Fischer, Clarence Brazis, I.e.Vern Pointer FRONT RON: Mr. Monroe, James Monroe, William Meyer, Israel Hiken, Della Sample, Cwendolene Chandler, Murrsll Hayden, Francis Britt, Hewitt Cravens, Harold Robinson, Vallee Buckles, Miss Davidson THE CHANTICLEER STAFF The Chantlcleer Staff this year has tried to publish a paper that would be enjoyable to all its subscribers. Nothing is quite so humorous as a good old-fashioned case of jealousy. The Boomerang, presented by the class of 1955, was a hilarious triangle of love, misunderstanding, and jealousy. Dr. Summers, a rising young doctor, was faced with the serious problem of a handsomely equipped office, an extensive medical library, but no patients. This dilemma did not last long, for the dramatic appearance of Budd Woodbridge changed the situation quickly. The services of an efficient nurse were required immed- iately to soothe the ruffled lover and to bring Grace Tyler to her senses. . The play proved to be a high-light on the horizon of the yearfs activities. Miss Marion Johnson was a capable director and much of the play's success is due to her. Lucille Holloway, the retiring queen, was the first to enter. Dressed in a white gown, she made a regal appearance throne to reign for the last as she came forth on Paul Gillespy's arm. She ascended the time over the athletic domain. Again the trumpets sounded their clarion call as Mildred Pointer, on the arm of Marvin Lochman, came to pay honor to the new queen. Mildred presented a charming picture in her rob1n's-egg blue taffeta gown. Beverly Paul, the second take their places beside the fur. The first maid of honor, ter Fanny May and Walter had maid of honor, and her escort, Orville Gerfen, came forth to throne. Beverly's dress was pink satin tri med with matching Miss Fanny May Stephens, was escorted by Walter Gerding. Af- bowed to the queen, they took their places on Her immediate right. Blue crepe was Fanny May's choice, which was a perfect one for her blonde levell- 118530 Once again the trumpeters stepped forth, this time to proclaim the new queen of 1954- l955, Miss Jeanne Fletcher, on the arm of Captain Dorris Hoge. In step with soft orches- tral tones, the new Queen'of Love and Beauty and her escort began their stately march to the throne. The Queen's robe was of heavy white crepe made on tunic lines. Her purple and white train was carried by Carl and Earle Paoli. As Her Majesty approached the dais, Lucille arose and presented her crown to Captain Hogs. He then turned and placed the golden sym- bol of royalty upon the brow of the kneeling queen. The Queen arose and took her place upon the throne, and Coach Struck presented to the Queen and to each of her maids a token of appreciation for their efforts in the promotion of the school's athletic activities. The senior class expressed appreciation to Jeanne and Lucille by a gift of flowers. Cap- tain Hoga and the new Queen then led the dancing. will I , ,,.,,,g,-+e-..4a, .. ..,. .,,, , , --,772 A 1 SFYILIE ANDSIEIIIVIICIII- ILIEAIDIEIDS IIIN sux mrnuis LLINSVI LLE.
