To do this, moral and spiritual forces must go forward at double-quick time to catch up with the inventive games of man. You have seen in your generation the pro- duction of machines destined to usher in an age of plenty-a better life for all. You have also seen the production of machines destined to destroy man. No one can predict what your part will be in America's destiny, but whatever it is will require clear thinking and courage, and a reserve of moral fortitude and spiritual stamina, To this end we trust your school, your home, and your church have contributed. Sincerely, CARL M. DIEFENBACH. CARL M. DIEFENBACH Supervising Principal HE Collingswood Board of Education holds its regular monthly meeting on the second Thursday of each month. Mr. Benson De L. Barron is president of the Board. Mrs. W. Arthur Lofft is vice-president and Mr. H. Milton Restrick is district clerk. The Board of Education carries out much of its tireless work for the Collingswood schools through committees. The Finance Committee consists of Mr. Walter Marshall, Mr. Harry Rainey, and Mrs. Harold Parker. The Athletic Committee is composed of Mr. George Bierschenk, Mr. Robert Scarborough and Mr. Herbert Schooley. Mr. Charles Reese, Mr. Harry Rainey, and Mr. Robert Scar- borough constitute the Property Committee. This year the Board suffered a great loss in the death of Mrs. Eva Kachline, who was always greatly interested in the welfare of Collingswood schools. Mrs. Kachline was a school board member for eleven years. Mrs. Har- old Parker has been elected to complete Mrs. Kachline's term. But change will have o large meaning when applied to the regu- latory processes ot the life of each one of you. Class of l94l, you have changed from high school pupils to alumni. To keep growing, you must keep changing. This means changing your ideals, prayers, and dreams. To progress, you must adopt new tendencies for old legends, take new paths for old ruts, and build on new ex- perienccs instead of trying to make your life conform to memories. Just as your world is now changing from one dream to another, so you will change to voter, tax-payer, employee, soldier, nurse, parent, and employer. Try to grow into each change with intelligence, tolerance, and spiritual belief. PERCY s. EICHELBERGER. PERCY S. EICHELBERGER Principal I Mr. H. M. The Highway Safety Classes were ably conducted by Mr. Daniel Sullivan. Upon completion of this course, stu- dents were able to procure drivers' li- censes with ease and security. Miss Elizabeth Valentine took com- petent charge of the eight girls who participated in advanced sewing and design. Fifteen boys took advantage of the Mechanical Drawing course offered un- der the direction of Mr. Claire Robb. For those students interested in mathematics and science, and desiring a better understanding of the slide rule, slide rule classes were held by Mr. Kenneth Johnson. Miss Bess Huey conducted a special music class for those students who, be- cause of conflicting activities, were un- able to participate in the glee club or orchestra. Every Tuesday afternoon, Miss Edna Hyde met the Art Classes for two periods. Each of these classes proved to be of great value to those participating, and their continued development will be a practical asset to the school. Top to bottom: Miss E. Letts, Jr., the Guidance Department was organized in l939, in order that the problems of the pupils could be studied, and aid be given toward the solution of various problems that arise in the school personnel. Personal, as well as discipline prob- lems, are taken care of by Miss Flora Hooper and Mr. Kenneth Johnson. Scholarships and College Selections are handled by Miss Eunice Mellinger. The important matter of job placement comes under the direction of Mr. Will- son Rowe and Mr. Carl Zoerner. Mr. George Letts, Jr., is director of the en- tire division and specializes in matters pertaining to school subject problems, home contacts, vocational guidance, and psychological testing. An attempt is made by the advisors to meet the needs of the pupils as in- dividuals. All interviews are strictly confidential. Pupils may seek advice on whatever matters need special consider- ation. The department is building up ex- tensive files of vocational information and a vocational library. Aptitude tests have been given during the year. HIS year Collingswood High School is featuring the biggest show on earth, the greatest extravaganza of the school year- The Knight of l94ll The faithful troupers are exhibiting this production, after a season of ceaseless planning and untiring effort. Eligibility for the yearbook staff is based on talent, originality, scholarship, and capacity for work. Seniors, only, are selected. The staff meets regularly, four times a week, to discuss and solve the problems of production. The goal of this year's group is to maintain the standard of excellence displayed by preceding yearbook staffs. l939 and l94O Knights were All-American selections of the National Scholastic Press Association. To facilitate smooth progress The Knight staff is separated into three special- ized divisions: art, literary, and business. Over each section presides a student especially talented and capable in the one particular field. This year, Norma Huff- nagle as art editor, Helen Barton as literary editor, and Robert Hitchcock as business manager have supervised the work of their respective staffs. Directing and aiding all, has been Russell Eisenhardt, editor-in-chief. The faculty sponsors are Miss Flora Hooper and Mr. Kenneth Johnson. Twenty-eight Russell Eisenhardt,.. ...,.. ....... HERE they come and on they march: the Collings- wood Band of seventy students with Robert Grier, drum major, and Mr. Morrow Stough, director, playing Fight for Collingswood. Next, marching in high stepping rhythm, the Collingswood Girls' Drum and Bugle Corps follows. Martha Ann Merchant leads this group of fifty-four girls which is under the direc- tion of Mrs. Ruth McBurney. Doris Schwartz is bugle sergeant, Dorothy Taylor is second bugle sergeant, and Miriam Taylor is drum sergeant. Lieutenant Betsy Jermon assists the drum major. Throughout the football season these two organizations cheer us on with inspiring songs, and perform intricate manoeuvers for thousands of spectators. A superb concert of military and classical music was given by the band on May l. Members of the Girls' Drum and Bugle Corps also participated. Both groups took part in the Memorial Day Parade on May 30. For more pensive moments the Collingswood High School Orchestra has played scintillating music and melodious works of the masters. There are thirty members working under the baton of Mr. Morrow Stough. The orchestra has presented selections of colorful music for assembly programs, for the junior and senior plays, and for a spring concert on April 3. 7,Q5,7.l.33'S W' lsfiliif. ' K: Qs. Under the direction of Miss Bess Huey, these organizations of two hundred students have joined in giving the power of song and the flavor of music to many. The choir, a group of seventy-one students, com- posed of both girls and bays, has sung at the State Festival at Trenton and the Cultural Olym- pics at the University of Pennsylvania. Together, the choir and glee clubs gave a lovely, picturesque Christmas program. ln the spring, an impressive public concert exhibited the well- trained voices of the choir, girls' glee club, boys' glee club, and the combined groups. Members of the choir who were also members of the New Jersey State Chorus this year were Doris Schwartz, Alice Moore, Elaine Alexander, Sue Love, Raymond Winch, and William Raymond. They participated in concerts held at Atlantic City, New Jersey, during the fall and again in the spring. Thirty-two lA'l'l.' ll LE ' .' Rl Ii LIIIIY Upper left, Boys' Glee Club: Back row: O. Kroener devotes so much of her time and of her energy to coaching dramatics at Collingswood High School, that that particular corner of the big tent is such a sparkling one. The Sophomore Dramatic Club, which meets during school hours, and the Junior Dramatic Club, which meets after school, are speech classes in which poise, voice- control, and self-confidence are taught. Here, the twenty-eight members of the sophomore club and the thirty members of the junior club evince their active interest in dramatic art. The sophomore club, with the help of the juniors and seniors, con- ducted a Christmas service with the choir. In the spring, the speech classes had charge of an assembly program. The officers of the Sophomore Dramatic Club are Howard Hinkeldey, president, Edith Corson, vice-president, Betty Catana, secretary. The Junior Dramatic Club officers are Coleman Conroy, president, Roberta Pike, vice-president, Frank Strockbine, secretary, Jane DeWees, treasurer. The Senior Dramatic Club consists of veterans all. The president of this or- ganization is Robert Hitchcock, a star Thespian in both junior and senior years. George Diffenderfer holds the office of vice-president. Sylvia Lutz, who was twice leading lady, is secretary, and Ruth Miller is treasurer. The other members ore Milton Holmes, Norma Ciliberti, Ruth Lutz, Russell Eisenhardt, Margaret Wiswell, Homer McNabb, David Bantle, Sarah Burbage, and Marjorie Brickner. One of the projects of the Senior Dramatic Club was the presentation of Club Capers, a series of stunts and one-act plays enacted by members selected from each of the three dramatic clubs. Sarah Burbage, Sylvia Lutz, and Homer McNabb composed the committee of seniors that planned and supervised this entertainment. For the past two years, deserving seniors have been awarded the Dramatic Club pin, a specially designed emblem upon which is cut the reproduction of a classic Greek mask. This year, each of the thirteen members of the Senior Dramatic Club received this honor. Of course, the most important role of dramatics here is the presentation of the annual junior and senior plays. Proceeds from these class projects form a fund used in payment of the yearbook in the senior year. This year, the senior play, a mystery, was produced in the fall. The junior play, given in the spring, was a comedy. Bath presentations were well attended and enthusiastically applauded. Left: Members of the senior play cast study lines together. The difficult character roles taken by Homer McNabb, Norma Ciliberti, and Milton Holmes were especially well portrayed. Under the expert direction of Miss Edith H. A Wednesday Afternoon in June begins the first act. lf it had been any other time of the year, things would never have happened that way. But when a Penny Wood meets a Roger Van Vleck in June, complications are inevitable. Penny, played by Marilyn Burr, simply forgot about Chuck Harris, the glider- building boy next door, when the college sheik Roger, played by Ralph Reppert, visited the Woods. Chuck, who was portrayed by John Murphy, nearly broke his neck before Penny discovered that Roger's affections were disputed territory. Jean Carson, as Julie Harris, was Penny's rival. Wise Mrs. Wood, depicted by Jane De Wees, handled the red dress affair with motherly skill. Jeanne Davies was Milly Lou, a thorn in the dignity of Uncle G. KGalahadl Mervy Roberts, portrayed by Coleman Conroy. Bruce Shugart as Dr. Wood survived all mishaps without permanent consequences. Chuck's father, played by John Boyer, learned to understand his son. Elmer Tuttle KFrank Strockbinel and Effie KDoris Clevengerl were the clowns of this performance in their portrayals of the hired man and the exasper- ated maid. Kroener directed these novices in the world of dramatics with patience and wisdom. The Class Troupe-rs gratitude of the cast and of the junior class was partially expressed by gifts presented after the last curtain. Yes, folks, here was a dramatic production with few parallels, an accomplishment of which the class of l942 may be proud, a performance acclaimed by capacity crowds, who attended in spite of the stormy weather. The students, selected by the faculty, represent the out- standing members of the junior and senior classes. This year the society consisted of forty-three members. Mr. H. K. Reiss Holston was the capable advisor of the organization. Each year, the National Honor Society undertakes the task of decorating the halls at Christmas. This year they also presented an original Americanization Quiz for a Thanksgiving Day Project. A new feature in their program of the year was an elaborate induc- tion service which took place in assembly. HE Quill and Scroll is an International Society for high school journalists, whose local members are nominated by the advisors of The Knight and Calls-High News. lts aim is to encourage and reward individual achievement in the various fields of journalism in high schools. To be eligible for membership, a student must be at least a junior, in the upper third of the class, and outstanding in some department of the school publi- cations. He must be recommended by the sponsor of the publication and approved by the national officers. The vows of membership are taken at an impressive candlelight service, at the end of the year. KIIIIIZIIISI' :lml .1l'1'l3liIll N ARRAY of skillful artists provided assembly programs which gave a very welcome change from the more serious aspects of school life this year. To attempt to review the year's program would be to thumb your way through Webster tor appropriate superlatives. This abun- dance of programs was supplied by two groups of artists. The troupers who presented programs under the auspices of the Assembly Com- mittee of the Student Governing Board represented the first category. Included here were very interesting lectures on art, nature, diving, finger-printing, plus music and dancing. The originality and ability displayed by the student body who composed the second group was worthy of a Helen Hayes or a Barrymore. Their programs were com- posed of every type of entertainment- commemoratives, quiz programs, musicals, movies, art programs, and student or- ganization productions. Because the pro- grams were presented by members of the student body, a very desirable atmosphere surrounded every performance. The pres- entations of every group were of a widely representative nature and proved of great interest to everyone. An excellent beginning of the year's work was the collecting of Sl52.03 during Roll Call Week. This money buys food, clothing, glasses, and medicine for needy students. The Red Cross Vision, a symbolic pageant, was presented to the senior and junior high assemblies and to the Camden County Rally. One hundred fifty garments were given to the P. T. A. for British Relief. 400 wash cloths were knitted and crocheted by students for refugees. Three portfolios were sent to South America, containing actual photographs given by the students and by the Knight. The Thanksgiving collection for needy families amounted to 486 food articles. The climax of the year's activities was the collection of l07 Christmas baskets crammed with food and gifts, the value totalling 563792. Paint was donated by a lccal shop for the repair of toys for children. These toys were added to the baskets. Several of our boys who are now in military service were remembered at holidays in special ways. They also were sent each issue of the Colls-High-News. A delegation of thirty-five pupils attended the state convention at Trenton in October and took a very active part in the proceedings. This year's officers in the Collingswood council were: chairman, Arthur Keiter, vice-chairman, Phyllis Strobel, recording secretary, Janet Savidge, corresponding secretary, Ann Leete. There were more than 200 articles of clothing and two large cartons of shoes which Mrs. Ruth Grubb, welfare chairman, and Mr. Pericles Pavlides, student representative chairman, turned over to this worthy cause. Back-to-School-Night was sponsored by the junior and senior high schools as an excellent opportunity for parents and teachers to become acquainted. The P. T. Coached by H. T. Skeets lrvine, both the old and the new started the season by roaring their way through a mediocre Palmyra team to the tune of l8 to 0. Wildcats Brosic and Werner clawed the Pals for touchdowns while Kitten Smith did likewise. ln the second fray of the season the Panthers tangled with Woodrow Wilson. When the roars and cries subsided, the colossal king-cats were again triumphant, the score being l3 to 0 this time. The Panthers dined royally on poultry when they met the clan from Vineland, devouring them by l2 to 6, Werner scoring twice. Down Atlantic City way, the golden cats found the Taffies a little sticky, nevertheless they leaped and bounded to a l4 to O victory. Bridgeton provided a breather' for the magnanimous maulers, who, as usual, emerged victorious by a 27 to 7 score. The big cats managed to scratch their way to a 7 to 6 win over their arch-rivals, Camden. The Colls ' score came as a result of an intercepted pass by the speed-cat-king, Forty-six I L 1 C1 ? f wk' Egfr Q 'ij I r 7 , LQ, KL 2 , , , H RQ ig 7 S Q? m SJC LLS sn R li ' ' . f l fl Werner, and the conversion by the Panther with the educated toe, Brosic. Thus, the l940 team ran its winning streak to six in a row. To extend this winning streak to seven in a row, the Panthers needed a victory over Trenton, which is just what they captured when they beat the Trenton team, 7 to 2. Brosic accounted for this Panther win, scoring the touchdown an a reverse and then kicking the extra point. The Panthers received their first and only setback of the season when Haddonfield surprised the Calls with a l2 to 6 win. Although the Panthers out-roared, out-ran, and out-performed the Haddons, luck was against them. Indeed it was on the last play of the game that A. Padgett, shitty Haddon back, managed to bore his way through clawing cats to a touchdown and a victory. Upper: A valiant but vain effort to block Bridgeton's kick is made by C, Beck. Fleet G. The defending league and South Jersey champs never relinquished the sun berth despite two losses to Millville. The Marksmen played two preliminary games against Woodrow Wilson and the alumni, winning the former and losing the latter. Later in the season, they bowed to Camden in a non-league encounter. Woodbury, the first league opponent, bowed before the Blue and Gold quintet, and Bridgeton soon followed suit. The Colls' first defeat came at the hands of Millville 25 to 26. Then, with a slashing attack, they devoured their next four opponents: Haddon Heights, Vineland, Audubon, Haddonfield. This merited a play-off game for the first half championship with Millville, who lost to the tune of 37 to 25. Beginning the second half, the Panthers buried Woodbury and Bridgeton. Again they took the measure from Millville 27 to 29, in a thrilling encounter. The Coils licked their wounds over the inert Haddon Heights squad, and decisively swarmed over the Poultry Clan. Helplessly Audubon slipped beneath the horde of blue and gold jerseys, and Haddonfield vainly attempted to check a relentless Panther attack. This left the Collingswood squad in sole possession of the sun berth and gave them the resulting suburban league championship for the l94l season. On March l0, the Coils played Bridgeton in the first of the South Jersey Group 4 play-offs. Bill Beck, season's high scorer, went on a scoring spree in the last quarter to pace the Panthers to a 31 to 25 win. Woodrow Wilson, the season's surprise team, conquered the Panthers 22 to 26 on March l4. This stopped the Coils from successfully defending their last year's South Jersey Group 4 title. LTHOUGH the i940 track team was unsuccessful in defending Collingswoo-:l's title as the South Jersey Champions, several members of the squad, outstanding in that they were consistent double winners, established league records. In a closely-contested meet, the Coils were nosed out by West Catholic 55V2-62Vz. Victory in the pole vault enabled the Philadelphians to gain the edge. Collingswood's Motsen, double winner, made a discus throw of l09' 4 and a shot heave of 42'. The Cells had the easy victory of 77-45 over Haddonfield. Jepson, Morisey, and Freeman were double winners. Jepson starred in sprint events, winning the l00-yard dash in l0.7 seconds, the 200-yard in 24 seconds. Morisey snared first points in both hurdle races -200-yard low hurdle in 27.2 seconds and l50-yard high hurdle in l6.8 seconds. Freeman cleared the bar at l0' 8 to gain pole vault honors, and leaped l8' lO3A to win the broad jump. In the triangular meet, Collingswood trackmen turned back W. Wilson and Moorestown. Participating in the Delaware lnterscholastic Meet, Collingswood thinclads earned their biggest win by finishing first in Class A. At the South Jersey meet, a Trenton Group 4 track team dethroned the Coils from the championship class. Such a defeat had not been suffered for l3 previous years. However, three records were broken at this meet by Collingswood men. Morisey set a new time of l6.5 seconds for the l20-yard high hurdles and 26.3 seconds for the 220-yard low hurdles, while Freeman shattered the pole vault record by soaring over the bar at ll' lOVs . Against Camden, the team scored a hard-earned victory of 68-54. This year, Coach Howard Irvine anticipates a successful season, with the possible recapture of the championship for l94l. Last year, the CoIls finished in second place, with two other teams tied for first place. This year Coach Sam Byham antici- pates an even more successful season for his charges. He believes that the Panthers definitely will be in the league race, although he makes no predictions concerning the crown. One reason for the good prospects is the return of seven var- sity lettermen. They are: A. Shute, catcher, W. Beck, ace pitcher: D. Stohner at first base, J. Pizarro at second: J. Leslie at third, and the fleet guardians of the outer gardens, G. Talarico and J. Brosic. This leaves vacant one position each in the infield and outfield, which will insure a mad scramble among the eager kittens. And there you have the baseball outlook for the l94l Panthers, and a very promising outlook, too! ' Last year, league records were established at the Haddon Heights meet, when the medley team set a record of I.08.8 for that event, and Baker, in the one hundred-yard backstroke entry, set a time of l.ll.2. This year the squad's efforts were seriously hampered by the loss of all veteran men. Finishing their league competition with two wins and six defeats, the Collingswood natators placed sixth in rank. The Coils scored their two victories by defeating Had- donfield 37 to 29 and Ocean City 38 to 28. They lost a closely contested meet to Haddon Heights, 30 to 36, in the medley race, where the Heights gained their slight margin. Some of the team's more consistent high scorers were Carman, Love, Null, Wales and Koszewski, each winning many of their individual entries. N OACH Joe Goldstein's l940 tennis team, undefeated save once, concluded a successful season, vying with Camden for second place in the South Jersey Inter- scholastic Tennis League. ln recognition for their court achievements, several Col- lingswood players were presented with medals at the annual tennis banquet. ln a pre-season non-league contest with Woodbury, Collingswood netmen were nosed out by their opponents 2-3. At Farnham Park, the squad suffered its sole defeat at the hands of a powerful Camden team, when the latter shut out the Colls 5-0. The match was, however, a very heated one, with most of the games extending to three sets. Journeying to Pemberton, the Blue and Gold racketeers set down their ad- versaries by the score of 4-l. Again the Collingswood netmen chalked up an easy victory in the league competition by trouncing Riverside 5-0. On the Dudley Grange courts, the Colls scored an impressive win of 4-l over Woodrow Wilson. Thus the tennis activities were concluded rather early, for the remaining Moorestown and Palmyra matches were both forfeited to Collingswood. Last fall, the team held its eighth annual tennis tournament in order to deter- mine the players' varsity standing. The girls took a trouncing from Paulsboro, with a 3-l score spelling victory for the outsiders. The game with Bridgeton netted another loss, with Bridgeton winning 5-3. The girls defeated Audubon 3-l, in the last league game of the season. The Calls played three non-le.ague games. They defeated Moorestown High, 7-0, gained a 2'-l victory over Royersford, Pennsylvania, and arived at a 3-3 deadlock with Moorestown Friends. Grace Schuler led in points scored with a total of twelve, Lido McMahon was second with three, and Betty Smith and Marjorie Brooks were tied for third place with two each. Last season proved most successful for these stars when they led Merchantville l5-l3, captured Haddon Heights by a score of 43-l9, won over Audubon by l4-l9, mowed Pitman by a 50-I5 margin, and finally conquered Hallahan by a score of 36-30. This year the girls have made a splendid beginning with two victories to their credit, one snared from Audu- bon 4l-24 and one from Merchantville 42-23. Four meets remain and Trenton, a non-league meet, closes the season. A number of veteran aquatic aces have returned in tip-top shape to do their bit for the winning team. These are Dorothy Ohlemeyer, Betty Smith, and Betty Barry, a startling newcomer, who compose the medley team. Betty Smith also holds the 20-yard freestyle record of l0.2 seconds and the 40-yard freestyle record of 24 seconds. Martha Ann Merchant, tops among the diving seals, won over all competitors last year and is undefeated so far this year. Natalie Wood, Charlotte Craig, and El- mira Meier are preparing to follow in her footsteps. Those who show great promise in this sparkling aqua- cade are Phyllis Burr, Virginia Powers, Shirley Thompson, Barbara Stratton, Dorothy Hirleman, and Lillian Miller. Miriam Taylor, Shirley Heisinger, and Natalie Wood excel in the novice race. Betty Franks, the manager, and Marilyn Burr, her assistant, take charge of the team's practical affairs. Miss Ruth Woolston, the Champs' very able coach, was recently elected president of the South Jersey Swim- ming League. This honor was well earned by Miss Woolston, who has worked untiringly for better physical education through the medium of swimming. Thus, these splashing mermaids, who for four years have held the Girls' South Jersey League Championship, hope for a fifth triumph and are top-billing in their high school show. IFIMKSIIINIB FIERIININITY HE girls of the Collingswood High School basketball team have set a quick, steady pace throughout the season. This fast-moving sextet has given stiff competition to the rival schools. High scorers for the l94O-4l season were Grace Schuler, Marjorie Brooks, and Evelyn Shaw. Despite Coach Lorina Vowinkle's attempts to find a team of six in perfect coordination, no championship team resulted. In the game with Woodbury, Collingswood bowed to her rival after thirty-two minutes of teamwork and vigor- ous playing. Topped by Vineland this season, the Colls surrendered their l940 championship. The team played Little Flower High School for the first time. The Philadelphia school lost to Collingswood in an upset, the score being 40-25. Four varsity members played their last game. They are the newest performers who have made a truly amazin rand entr 9 9 Y into the big ring. Ahead of them lie their two greatest years, and already they have shown themselves to be full of promise. This year's officers of the class were as follows: Charles Hesington, president, led the group in its various enterprises, Thelma Reynolds, secretary, and Lida McMahon, treasurer, Martin Law, vice-president, assisted him in these matters, managed the recorded and monetary items. These student leaders were very aptly guided in the affairs and activities of the year by the class sponsors, Mrs. Daniel Sullivan and Mr. Joseph Goldstein. The outstanding personalities of the class were chosen by the Who's Who election. They represented all fields of popularity and accomplishment: the best-looking pair, the most popular girl and boy, the best athletes, the most career- conscious students, and the wittiest two.
