Latin Foreign Language Department H NE of the aims ot the Foreign Language Department is to give an under- standing of the language, that is, a fair ability to read, write, and speak the language. The student becomes better acquainted with his mother tongue-its ward derivations and grammatical:constructions. A second aim is to give a cultural background by creating an appreciation for the literature, art, and music of the country. Another aim is to prepare the student for further study in college. German is invaluable in the study of medicine and chemistry since many scientific works have never been translated into English and must theretore be read in the original, ESTHER A. SNOKE.
