SWOOD HIGH SCHOOL VITAL part of any school system is its Board of Education. Collingswood is particularly fortunate in having a School Board composed of nine very alert and interested members, Mr. Charles Kloss, Jr. heads this organization which carries on its work through committees. Each member is chairman ot at least one committee and serves on two or more others. These progressive committees are responsible in a large part for the high rating ot Collingswood High School. Early in the school year of l936-l937 the members of the Board and the com- munity were saddened by the passing of Mr. Seaford Jackson who had served the schools faithfully tor six years. COLLINGSWOOD, New Jersey, had white settlers when William Penn was making his treaty with the Indians. Perhaps it is difficult to realize that the present-day, pretty, suburban town, twenty minutes away from Philadelphia and next door to Central Airports droning planes was once merely o district of scattered farmhouses, Robert Zane, in company with Robert Turner, took up land in the Collingswood section in the early part of l6S2. Two houses shown on a local map of l7OO are those of Robert Zone and Isaac Hollingsham. The existence of Collingswood as a borough dates from May 22, l8SS. Mr. Chalkley Parker was the first President of the Town Czmrnissicners and Mr, Henry R, Totem was the first to serve in the capacity of Mayor. A one-room school, in which one teacher was employed, stood upon the site cf the present twenty-e ght-room school in wdich thirty-four teachers are employed. ln l906 the High School was inaugurated, offering two courses of study: a college preparatory and a commercial. There were twelve members of the first graduating class and a total enrollment of less than ZOO. Today the class of l937 numbers 3245 the school enrollment, l,l I9. In l938 Collings- wcad will celebrate its 50th anniversary as a borough.

HT HE bays and girls of Collingswood High School deserve the best education that can be provided, but they must work for it. The teacher can only direct and inspireethe pupils must do the work. This is Mr. John B, Ritter's educational creed for Collingswood High School, The supervising principal of the schools came to Collingswood in September, l9l9, Previously, he taught in Wilmington Conference Academy, Dover, Delaware, and in Camden High School. He received his AB. at Gettysburg College and his MA, at the University of Pennsylvania. Although Mr. Ritter is kept very busy with school work he has three hobbiesfsports, his automobile, and his garden. Mr. Percy S. Eichelberger also has hobbies-golf, swimming, hunting and fishing, lt is he who supplies the rabbits' feet for the football team as good-luck charms for the clash between the two great rivals, Camden and Collingswood. Mr. Eichelberger became Principal at Collingswood High School in September, l927.
