COLLINGSWOOD, New Jersey, had white settlers when William Penn was making his treaty with the Indians. Perhaps it is difficult to realize that the present-day, pretty, suburban town, twenty minutes away from Philadelphia and next door to Central Airports droning planes was once merely o district of scattered farmhouses, Robert Zane, in company with Robert Turner, took up land in the Collingswood section in the early part of l6S2. Two houses shown on a local map of l7OO are those of Robert Zone and Isaac Hollingsham. The existence of Collingswood as a borough dates from May 22, l8SS. Mr. Chalkley Parker was the first President of the Town Czmrnissicners and Mr, Henry R, Totem was the first to serve in the capacity of Mayor. A one-room school, in which one teacher was employed, stood upon the site cf the present twenty-e ght-room school in wdich thirty-four teachers are employed. ln l906 the High School was inaugurated, offering two courses of study: a college preparatory and a commercial. There were twelve members of the first graduating class and a total enrollment of less than ZOO. Today the class of l937 numbers 3245 the school enrollment, l,l I9. In l938 Collings- wcad will celebrate its 50th anniversary as a borough.
