MISS HYDE MR. JOHNSON MISS HOOPER COLLI A View ol the formal fron! entrance of the Edward C. xnigm High scmml, Collingx- wood, New Jersey. COLLINGSWOOD, New Jersey, had white settlers when William Penn was making his treaty with the Indians. Perhaps it is difficult to realize that the present-day, pretty, suburban town, twenty minutes away from Philadelphia and next door to Central Airports droning planes was once merely o district of scattered farmhouses, Robert Zane, in company with Robert Turner, took up land in the Collingswood section in the early part of l6S2. Two houses shown on a local map of l7OO are those of Robert Zone and Isaac Hollingsham. The existence of Collingswood as a borough dates from May 22, l8SS. Mr. Chalkley Parker was the first President of the Town Czmrnissicners and Mr, Henry R, Totem was the first to serve in the capacity of Mayor. A one-room school, in which one teacher was employed, stood upon the site cf the present twenty-e ght-room school in wdich thirty-four teachers are employed. ln l906 the High School was inaugurated, offering two courses of study: a college preparatory and a commercial. There were twelve members of the first graduating class and a total enrollment of less than ZOO. Today the class of l937 numbers 3245 the school enrollment, l,l I9. In l938 Collings- wcad will celebrate its 50th anniversary as a borough. SWOOD HIGH SCHOOL VITAL part of any school system is its Board of Education. Collingswood is particularly fortunate in having a School Board composed of nine very alert and interested members, Mr. Charles Kloss, Jr. heads this organization which carries on its work through committees. Each member is chairman ot at least one committee and serves on two or more others. These progressive committees are responsible in a large part for the high rating ot Collingswood High School. Early in the school year of l936-l937 the members of the Board and the com- munity were saddened by the passing of Mr. Seaford Jackson who had served the schools faithfully tor six years. Eichelbergev, Prinripol of Collingswood High School, reading nn- nouncements in Assembly. HT HE bays and girls of Collingswood High School deserve the best education that can be provided, but they must work for it. The teacher can only direct and inspireethe pupils must do the work. This is Mr. John B, Ritter's educational creed for Collingswood High School, The supervising principal of the schools came to Collingswood in September, l9l9, Previously, he taught in Wilmington Conference Academy, Dover, Delaware, and in Camden High School. He received his AB. at Gettysburg College and his MA, at the University of Pennsylvania. Although Mr. Ritter is kept very busy with school work he has three hobbiesfsports, his automobile, and his garden. Mr. Percy S. Eichelberger also has hobbies-golf, swimming, hunting and fishing, lt is he who supplies the rabbits' feet for the football team as good-luck charms for the clash between the two great rivals, Camden and Collingswood. Mr. Eichelberger became Principal at Collingswood High School in September, l927. He is a graduate of Shippensburg Teachers' College, and Gettysburg where he received his AB, His MA. was obtained from the University of Pennsylvania. He also has attended Columbia University and Temple, taking special courses. Before completing his college course, Mr. Eichelberger enlisted to serve his country during the World War. During a period of one and o half years in France he took active part in six major Allied drives. Prior to coming to Collingswood High School, Mr, Eichelberger taught in a grammar school in Pennsylvania for two years and a Bays' Preparatory School for three years He was Vice-Principal and head of the History Department in Amityville High School, Arnity- villelg New York, and was Principal of the Junior-Senior High School in Patchogue, New Yor . A continuance in a progressive way of all activities in Collingswood High School ex- presses Mr. Eichelberger's aim for C, H. S, The school day for Collingswood High begins at 8150 with the late bell tolling at 8147. Each morning offers three periods of forty-five minutes with assembly at l'l 205. On Tues- days ond Thursdays the Seniors and Juniors iourney to the auditorium for many enjoyable programs as do the Sophomores on Wednesdays and Fridays. After assembly comes the fatal dash to the lunchroom. First come, first served, seems to be the rule, as those who don't speed up their walk generally are without a seat and get mixed in the mad iam to buy food and pay for it, Soon the lunch period passes and the three afternoon periods follow with a make-up period after school for those people who need special instruction Thus passes a typical day in Collingswood High SclWOOl. This involves the teaching of general busi- ness subiects like business organization and law, as well as the more technical subjects of shorthand, typing, and bookkeeping, Fully cis important os any of these subjects is the development ot good business habits and attitudes. The number of commercial graduates who have secured and held good positions over a period at yeors is evidence that the aim of the department is realized to quite an extent. KATE H, FEE. The student becomes better acquainted with his mother tongue-its ward derivations and grammatical:constructions. A second aim is to give a cultural background by creating an appreciation for the literature, art, and music of the country. Another aim is to prepare the student for further study in college. German is invaluable in the study of medicine and chemistry since many scientific works have never been translated into English and must theretore be read in the original, ESTHER A. SNOKE. GLORIOUS vacation over, on September 9, the daily trek back to dear old Alma Mater begins anew. Herds come streaming in from every direction possible, for the student body has grown this year. lnside the dear old familiar halls are excitement, remorse, and bewilderment. Faith- ful Miss Oliver has her hands full trying to reg- ister the many greenies who walk hesitantly into the office. Once again begins the exhaustive study of reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic. Here is o place where learning and intellectual achieve- ment may live unmolested lt is also our own small social world jammed with young gaiety, laughter, and emotion. As one wanders down the halls, groups are seen, hither and yon, relating the wonderful adventures that were experienced during the vacation. All are talking at once, Snatches are heard of the wonderful coat of ton one acquired, the swell life-guard another met, the new sights someone else saw. So it continues for into the day. Some are wondering aimlessly here and there, gazing around them with rapt expressions, which one interprets as the glad-to-be-back look, while the greater matarity show an emotion of exactly the cpposite nature, Cutting across the park, through flu: fields, down the avenue, fhe slu- dellls lefurn to Sthtwl. artsy, busy, busy Miss otiw wg. isrm newcomers. Their worthy coach, Hazel Nicky Gal- lagher, views her candidates with enthusiasm, They, too, are on their way to a championship. Everybody is busy. The school year certainly is starting off with a bangs Fifty-six students are working industriously in order to get the school paper, the Coils High News, started. This paper T l is everyone-'s delight. ln it one finds all the news of the day that pertains to the students, jokes, features, pictures. Soon the Calls High News Campaign begins. The goal is SOO subscribers. Con it be reached? A thermometer is erected and every day pupils view it with interest as the mercury slowly rises. ln addition to campaigning among the students, all the salesmanship classes are told to go out to the various business offices of Collingswood and vicinity in order to try to get extra subscriptions. This is something different and is in charge of Mr, Raber Seely. Several weeks pass and the campaign ends with the mercury overflowing. The goal is reached and passed with 850 subscriptions, Victory, how sweet thou art! The very word victory reminds one of other stu- dent groups. Mrs LeRoy Larra Sponsored by Miss Patricia Farnham and led by Charles Stanger, the Collingswood High School Cheerleaders give the school's various teams exe cellent support. Numerous new songs and cheers have been introduced this past year. The Calls ' continuous victories are partially attributed to this peppy enthusiastic group. The Girls' Bugle and Drum Corps, under the direction of Miss Ruth Stevenson, spends many tedious hours throughout the year practcing, so D'Andren, J o n c s, Yerkcs, Rudderow, Cox, crm, mmf, nuns- befgev, sewer, sewer, N not ..g..g. ' QU? N-t f ' t HQ Bend and Drum and Bugle Corps on parade. that it may support the football team at each and every game. With pretty, high-stepping Estella Grier as their Drum Major, the girls perform in a most satisfac- tory manner. In addition to supplying music for football games, the corps participates in concerts and various community parades. The Collingswood High School Bond is the pride of the school. Mr, Joseph E. Conine is its director, and Charles Jaep is its Drum Maior. In addition to drilling at every football game, these able musicians broadcast over Station WCAM and present concerts during the year. Comes September 26, 1936, and one sees the results at the work of the football squad, the coaches, the band, and the bugle corps. A grand parade, including two bands, the Bugle and Drum Corps, the Collingswood American Legion, and twentyfone scout troops, opens the new stadium. Palmyra and Collingswood School bands perform nobly for the great masses tl-:ranging the athletic field for the game at the season. The enlarged stadium is now capable of seating 5000 spectators. The Calls, captained by James Spillane, pro- ceed to win from the Pals in their opening game. iSoan afterwards Spillane receives a chipped elbow which keeps him out of the game for most of the seasonl The score is 6-O. With Yhe flags flying, music playing and crowds cheering, the new stadium is dedituied. The second game is comparatively easy. Bill Miller, halfback, leads the boys in this l2-O vic- tory over Southern High of Philadelphia. As the season gets under way in this fine fash- ion, Howard Skeets Irvine, sometimes called the Knute Rockne of South Jersey, primes his team for the all-important game with Vineland. lThe Poultry Clan trimmed the Calls last year to the tune of I3-Ol A capacity crowd ot excited spectators jams the stadium. A cheer is given for Frank Jakob, tackle, who has been chosen captain. The whistle blows and the game starts. Neither team scares until late in the second period, when Vineland tallies the first points at the game. The visiting stand rises as a single body and cheers joyously while the huge stadium crowd utters not a word. The halt comes and goes and the game is nearly ended before things begin to pop. 9 Leather meets pigskin and the game is un. The Coils have the ball in their own territory and the ball is snapped back to Miller, He backs up and holds the ball, as if to pass, but Schaefer, coming from his end position like o streak of lightning, smoothly takes the ball from Miller and dodges down the field, evading tockler after tackler, dragging a few more obstinate ones after him in his effort to cross that last white line, Finally, with the swiftness and agility of a leop- ard, he dodges the last tackler and speeds on for a touchdown--56 yardsl The frenzied mob in the stadium is hilarious, They cheer and shout, but imagine, if you can, their uproarious amazement and ioy when they see Schaefer again execute the same play. He eludes the some tacklers and slips past them all for a beautiful 38-yard run to a touchdown. As the game ends in a l2-6 victory for Collings- wood, the proud team sweeps Schaefer to willing shoulders and carries him to the showers. After that the Calls journey to Atlantic City and take the shore team into camp by a score of 9-O Le Sage captains the Panthers, Jakob's blocking of a kick and Schaefer's tackling the man behind his goal line provide the safety, while Beale converts after Marvin scores the six-pointer. . .4 , . f'f?s H:2 . , , , A , . Haddonfield is the last setback for the Calls Many times the Calls are within the l-laddons' one-yard line, but fail to tally. The l-laddons ' only scoring threat is their successful field goal from the 20-yard mark. Le Sage leads the Colls. The Calls turn in their last victory over Woodrow Wilson, with Joe Didio again captain. Schaefer again scores both touchdowns. The score is I2-7, In the Turkey-day game, the Calls turn in a scoreless tie against the Thundering Herd from Woodbury. Both teams play well, the Calls often being within the 'll-lerd's one-yard line but failing to have that extra punch. Schaefer and Jakob co- captain during this last game. This year the Junior Red Cross Council has been reorganized Instead of each school having a sep- arate council, all the Collingswood schools have formed a council under the leadership of Miss Elizabeth Valent:ne, Miss Achsah Totem, and Miss Flora Hooper. The officers are Geraldine Hume, president, William Stevenson, yice-president, and Mary l-laod, secretary, Monthly meetings are held in the sewing roam, with representatives from all the schools. At Thanksgiving the puplls bring donations of food and clothing which are distributed through' cut the town. As Christmas comes again the home rooms fill baskets ancl attractively decorate them. These go to supply the needy families in our town with Christmas dnners, and food for a week. The ideal of Junior Red Cross is service. Another type of scholastic service is performed by Ye Merrie Players, led by Miss Edith Kroener, The officers of this club are Salvator Benigno, presidentgg Bayard Kraft, vice-president.: Blanche Lentz, secretary, Geraldine Guerra, treasurer. Here, in pausing, let us mention what a mar- velous director ot drarnatics Miss Kroener is. Sho has built up a commendable reputation for here self and Collingswood. The l937 Seniors sustain the fame of former Collingswood dramatic productions with the pres- entation of the social comedy entitled The Queen's Husband. Salvator Benigno very suc- cessfully takes the leading role at the poor hen- pecked husband, The magnificent domineering character of the queen is portrayed by the equally magnificent Edna Cliver, a truly aristocratic ruler! The lovely daughter of this pair is Aclelle Lofft, whose fate seems more in her mother's hands than in her awn. The hero of all heroes is George Wright! Very interesting are the characters taken so capobly by Jefferies England, John Pulliam, Alfred Gottlieb, William Woods, Stewart Barnett, Conrad Knauf, Clarence Mochlelly, Everett Con- ine, and the lovely ladies-in-waiting, Charlotte Crall and Julie Cronfelt. Credit is surely due the Senior Board ot Control, the ushers, and all others helping to pack the house both nights and to keep order during the very tense moments of the Seniors' last dramatic offering. Now to say a little of the students, mostly of the fairer sex, who work hard in order to make the i937 Knight a whopping success, Under the able as- sistance of its advisers, Mr. K, Johnson, Miss F, Hooper, and Miss E. Hyde, the Knight Staff goes to town. The staff is divided into three groups: art, business, and writing. Eleanor Barnett is the head of the art group, and has charge of six artistically-minded girls who are the cream of the cropi Elizabeth Lorzelere, Jean Mackert, Gladys Quint, Olive Rehn, Evo Rose, and Dorothy Win- ther. They have charge of the layout ot the pages and pictures, and can be seen day after day cutting out and pasting composites. Everything that pertains ta art in the yearbook is their job which they do willingly, Hart- ley Bancroft, o ninth grade student, is helping out by taking numerous photographs and Mary Fink, a junior, is furnishing the drawings for the dividers. The Editor-in-Chief, Robert Owens, is a jack of all trades. Decorating, crooning, planning the yearbook, writing articles, and interviewing printers are all in his line. Next comes the business staff under the hardwork- ing Manager, Margery Riecke, its members are Elaine Cloypool, Moriorie Davies, Charlotte Fielding, Jack I..atz, and Frances Restrick, Their duty is to take care ot all the business details. They plan the subscription cam- paign, arrange for senior pictures, and handle collections. Just mention the word money to one at them and see what happens. Last but not least comes the writing staff, which has Helen Arader as its head The other members are Martha Christie, Grace Comfort, Ida Cox, Ruth Davenport, Dorothy Etter, Virginia Heisler, and Dorothy Holcombe. Everything in connection with writing-the stories, captions, and identifications---is the product of this group, A glimpse into Room 25 after school gives one impressions such as: Will you kindly Stop that infernal iabbering? Although the whole staff works hard, they also have lots of fun doing it, Their one aim is to make the l937 Knight the best ever. While the Knight staff may be found busily working in Room 25, talented members of the Junior Class may be found practicing. For what? Laughs and more laughs! One can almost hear the students heave a long sigh of relief as this thought flashes through their eager minds. School is not such a bad place after all, what with the thoughts of all the spring sports ahead, and the glorious, glorious thought of commence- ment, The heretofore tiresome trek to the alma mater becomes one of pleasure and an- ticipation. Who minds sitting in a classroom with the windows wide open and the ever-wel- come sun streaming in? lThe one cloud on the horizon is in the form of that horrible word examination l, During the lunch period, Stu- dents have various ways of amusing themselves. The boys can be seen playing baseball, or some other form of ballg while the girls, jumping rope, make a pretty picture in their gay dresses. It is, however, a very welcome addition, The aim of these boys and Mr. Holston is to build up a golf team in the future that will take on anything and anybody and come out on top with flying colors. As the golf team gets under way, the track team practices patiently for their difficult season. Signs of the successful season are already shown by the team's placing first in the Phila- delphia Suburban Relay at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia. The winning combination is Est- low, Bullington, Clark, and Magee. High iumpers who thrill the track fans are Duke Alexander, a new Sophomore star, Frank Jakob, Al Le Sage, and Everett Canine. Robert Billings and Edgar Schopbach team up os doubles Others who intend to see plenty of action are Robert Leaming, William McKnight, William Bennett, and Wallace Humphries, There's no reason why these fellows can't top the list again this year because they are surely going to convert good old Collingswood's fighting spirit into victorious tennis matches. Tennis balls swish back and forth, high ond low, here and there and the girls are at it again. Elsie Rogers and Betty Fulmer surely do know how to swing it-the tennis racket, of course! Then there's faithful Frannie Allen, steady as they come, and zealous Zito Swiecickigiust as fast as the wind. Batting the balls down at the net, stands Betty Brown and all the girls look determined to defy all de foes, New recruits to the courts are Thoira Roberts, Mary Ellen Oesterle, Dit Bailey and Beatrice Foster.
