WOOLSTON FRANCIS I. CARRAINH CHARLES 1. Risssia SEAFORD JACKSON BENSON LEBARRON THE BOARD OF EDUCATION BOVE are the memhers of the Board of Education who have so loyally stood hy the class of '34 in spite of forced economies in practically every department. In the face of these difficulties we have heen able to main' tain the high standards for which this school is noted. The newly elected memhers of the Board are Charles Reese, a memher of the legislative committee: Mrs. Alma Lofft, an active memher of the Parent Teachers' Associ- ationg and Benson Le Barron, who is on the teacher and finance committees. The other memhers are Charles Kloss, jr., president of the Board: Leland Osmun, vice president: Dr. H. S. XVoolston, a inemher of the teacher and athletic commit' tees: Francis Carraine, who is on the athletic and hand committee: Mrs. Eva Kachline, a memher of the teacher and hand committees: and Milton Restrick, who was elected District Clerk for the fourteenth year. jonn B. RITTER Supervising Principal To the Class of 1934: LLOW me to congratulate the memhers of the Class of 1934 upon the completion of your high school work. While this is a real achievement, you are, however, just crossing the Alps. Your education is just beginning. One of the strangest ideas that many people have is that one's education is limited to the years spent in school or college. Only a very small part of what you know was learned, or could he learned, in school. Really you acquired more knowledge in the first five years of your lives than in any ten suhsequent years of living. After receiving your diplomas comes the school of life itself. Everyone of you should plan for your continuous education or you will soon stagnate after graduation. Every one of you should keep up your reading if you would escape fossilization. We have to read the newspapers, of course, hut don't stop at the display given in the usual newsstand. Read the great hooks of the world for which you had no time in High School. Take an extension or a summer school course in a college or university. Again the hook of nature is ever wide open to the ohserving eye. The fields, the woods, the mountains, the starry sky on a winter's night, the hirds, and a thousand other avenues of knowledge are open to any ohserving person who has not gone to seed. Art, music, architecture, painting, sculpture, etc., likewise offer us their valuahle treasures. Finally from the many people with whom you come in contact, you will learn many valuahle lessons. Each one will contrihute his share of simple homely lessons in freedom, honesty, amhition, manliness, courage, moderateness, temperance, and other indispensahle virtues that make' character. Good luck to all of you. Ten P. S. EICHELBERGER Principal LASS of 1934, you are going out into a society in which success has heen praised too much: integrity too little. Cultivate a desire for integrity. lf you can do this you need nothing else. The rest shall he added in due time. Emphasis in this complicated life of ours has heen placed upon hrilliance, smartness, display of possessions and riches, and other outward indications of success to such an extent that the fundamental thing, the corner stone of lifes building, has heen left out. Cheating at exams at college under the honor system, selling stock that has no value, looting a laank and setting sail for foreign parts, giving a note for money that can never he paid, willful hankruptcies, displaying excessive worldly possessions for the sake of keeping up with others in the community - -these are some of thc cheatings in the face of life called success. The prolalem is very serious. If you would not have your children go forth into a society such as you are entering you must give attention to this thought. Success has heen overpraised without questioning the ways and means. You must go hack to the fundamentals of personal integrity. Integrity is important to us all. People have never ceased to admire and respect it, even though it has heen lost, due to the much advertised success. Truth, honor, and uprightness are the essential graces for integrity. They do not grow in a night. It is a slow, steady, growth of years which comes from daily associations with others, from daily practices and experiences. Integrity flourishes ,under praise, so praise the good people more and compliment the worldly successful less. Eleven Ni.-XRY E, Burl : Cmnmcrcial GRAM. H.-xxx: R Cum m c rum! FHM .-X. In 1910 the first part of our present high school was finished and a class of twelve students was graduated. In 1915 two wings were added to this building. This structure also being too small, a 6f3f3 plan was adopted, and in 1924 the Junior High School, containing an auditorium, cafeteria, and library, was built in back of the Senior High School. In 1931 ten more rooms were added, four to Senior High and six to Junior High: the athletic field was enlarged: and a concrete stadium was erected. The size of the graduating class of Collingswood High School has in' creased yearly until this year a total of two hundred and eighteen students has been reached. In the junior Class there is.an enrollment of two hundred and eighty' seven, while the Sophomore Class boasts of three hundred and eightyfthree students. III XIINFRY SII'm' H.iI,I. Sf:II XVI, v SR -J 4 Ui ini liuvilvi Tri-1'.x'iui1xi. Xl.-XTIH XIATII HISTORY At the present time three courses are otlered by the high school. The Academic course is divided into two classes: that which includes Latin, and that which substitutes Industrial History, Industrial Geography, or Social Problems for Latin. These latter subjects may also be substituted for foreign languages by students in either the General or Commercial courses. The Academic course prepares one for college, while the Commercial course, which includes Typewriting, Stenography, Office Practice, Book- keeping, Commercial Law, and Economics, prepares one for the business world. The General course, on the other hand, is made up largely of elective subjects, but can be made College Preparatory if so desired. The 1934 class decided this year to cancel the Washington trip, folf lowing the action taken by the Sophomore class of last year. This was due to the fact that the treasury was tied up in a closed bank. lt was also decided that the proceeds from the senior play should aid in the payment of the Kxioirr, while the senior dance would not be held as an enterprise for protit. The purposes of the orchestra are to serve the school, to give members pleasure in participating in group activi- ties and experience in knowledge of worthwhile materials, and to gain a greater knowledge of worthwhile compo' sitions. Twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, th: orchestra plays the marches for assembly and several times a year, in cooperation with the Glee Club, special orchestral programs are enjoyed by the students. The orchestra also furnished the music for this years operetta, Loose Change, and played at th: annual prof ductions of the junior and Senior classes. Before becoming a member of the orchestra it is necessary to pass an individual test. Tryfouts for new members are open at any time. Members deserve credit for their good work, loyal support, and school spirit. However, a great part of their success is due to the helpful and untiring efforts of Miss Huey. Here the members, both boys and girls, aim to set a high standard of performance by working toward excel' lence in diction, tone, shading, interpretation, and the blending of voices. Individual instruction is given and those who have been members for three years have made notable advancement. During the year a number of programs are planned, the most important of which are presented at Christmas and Easter in assembly. The club also appears occasionally before outside societies, and last year won second place in the Supplee Contest. The purposes of the club are to improve the taste in music, to develop natural ability, and to give pleasure through the singing of songs.
