Four periods a day Bill may be uncovered among the varied ap- parati of the laboratory making hydrogen sulphide or testing for a chlor- ide. However, between his exhortations on the Dance Committee's behalf and his bewilderment as President of the Cercle Francais, Barty finds time to be a basketball player, which is fortunate for us. Bill has a habit of going to the sea-shore and mumbling Pebbles, Pebbles, Pebbles , but maybe he is trying to recall something forgotten. He is going to Williams where both his honesty and sense of humor will be appreciated. Bill is a true pal and we value his friendship. His lanky form and dang- ling arms befit him for a distinguished career on the tennis court, and as a member of the tennis team for the past two years he has represented the school to advantage. Don's hearty laugh is as much a part of his personality as his ice cream suits and sport shoes. We wish him every success in life and will continue to value his friendship hereafter, even as we do now. Page nineteen THE 1934 DUTCHMAN LEONARD REED CARPENTER 146-53 32nd Avenue Flushing, N. Y. Aside from his ability to translate Vergil with ease, Len is a pro- ficient tennis player. The Class first noticed his presence when they were Freshmen and now he is an essential part of our variable group. Leonard commutes daily from Flushing and even then is never late, which is some accomplishment I Len is leaving us to conquer new fields and we are confident of his success. He can read in half an hour a book which takes an ordinary reader two hours-that he can tell what he has read when finished is more of a surprise. Basketball, Baseball, and Ten- nis are also among the accomplishments for which we praise Dechay . Char1ie's spirit, his good nature, his ability to take it , his sin- cerity, and his thoroughness in all undertakings assures his success when he leaves Collegiate. He is the butt of all jokes, but his ready smile and wit endear him to all who know him. And brains! Gosh! He puts his feet casually on the teacher's desk and sighs lazily. Pres- ently he is asleep. But no! He is merely waiting for his opportunity. Here it is. He stirs and dravvls something that reaches the ears of his class- mates. An instantaneous gale of laughter gradually dies down until the drawling begins again. As the period ends, George Doty rises, stretches and proceeds, to another class, Where again his feet are soon occupying the teacher's desk. Manager '33, '34, Dave Howson, that daring young man in the flying DeSoto, may be seen scooting around New York at a breakneck pace any day in the week. The demon driver has received speed tickets from all the prominent New England States and Maine. He transports part of the baseball team to all of the games and is, no doubt, responsible for the fainting condition of the players during the games. Dave is one of our best sports and a most likeable fellow. He has made a permanent place in the esteem of his classmates and we shall al- ways thrill to the discordant wail of his siren wherever we may be. Dave is the original man of many sides . In addition to being Mr. Taplin's mathematical pride-and joy, he is unusually adept at Basket- ball, Baseball, and Tennis. Although he has been with us only four years, he has rapidly endeared himself to the students and the faculty-in short, to all With Whom he has come in contact. Dave has done equally Well in his other activities, as you may guess from the long list above. With all these accomplishments behind him, We cannot help but feel that he Will make a success wherever he goes, and we Wish him that success with all our hearts. He is the possessor of a short-wave radio and spends his spare time experimenting with antennae, grid tubes and transformers. Although it was not definitely modeled on the French Club, it has adopted many of the delightful features of the older organization directed by M. Charles G. Sueur. The purpose of the Spanish Club is to meet informally several times during the year, to enjoy a collation at a Spanish or Hispano-American restaurant and to put to use as far as possible the idiomatic Castellano learned in class. As there is no better Way to learn a language than to speak it, the gatherings of the Spanish Club afford an excellent oppor- tunity to speak Spanish and to discuss the people and customs of those countries which We are studying. Each regular was a veteran of several campaigns, but although the team was very strong, it was small in number. The forward line, composed of Captain Dave Phillip, and Donald Platten, forwards, and Freling Smith, center, led the attack consistently, with able replacement ready, in Wil- liam Barthold, playing his first year on the Varsity. The defensive line of Jack Platten and George Doty contributed large- ly to the success of the team, holding the opponents well, while the for- wards scored. Highlights of the season were the victories over the Alumni, Engle- wood, and Barnard. For the first time in twelve years, a Varsity aggre- Page sixty THE 1934 DUTCHMAN gation triumphed over the Alumni in the Christmas game. Englewood was crushingly defeated twice by the lopsided scores of 37-19 and 45-15. Collegiate demonstrated its lighting spirit to advantage in the thrill- ing games With Stony Brook and Pingry, who had in former years com- pletely outclassed the Orange and Blue players. In losing both these games by the close score of 28-26 and 28-25, the lack of reserve material was alone responsible. In both games the Varsity led as far as the third quarter, only to be gradually worn down by heavier and fresher opponents. The season was brought to a close in a well played game with Barn- ard, Collegiate's traditional rival, the Orange and Blue downing the Pur- ple by a score of 22-18, and Completing a schedule of fifteen games with a record of nine victories. Two victories out of ten games is all that the present aggregation has been able to accomplish. Just where the trouble lies' is difficult to say. Inexperience is per- haps the greatest fault. Only a few regulars were left from last year's team, but next year the entire team will be composed of veterans, and the Varsity should 'fgo placesy. Captain Donald Platten played second base, fielding steadily, and batting well in the leadoff position. David Phillip divided his time be- tween shortstop and pitching, and led the team in batting. His pitching was most reliable, and he was credited with a three-hit victory over Barn- ard. Freling Smith played regularly for his first year, covering first base well, and contributing some heavy slugging at the plate. Jack Platten alternated between third base and center field, and was one of the leading hitters on the team. Behind the plate, Bill Reed played for the first year and steadily im- proved, so that he should be an excellent receiver next year. Eddie Hall and Brendon Griswold did most of the pitching, but were the victims of erratic support. However, the ability is there, and undoubtedly they will make excellent battery mates for Reed in the coming season. In the outfield Charlie Dethier, Hunter Borthwick, and Howard Hag- gerty performed their work capably, assisted by Stuart Griffin, Allen Portertield, and Justin McCarthy. Our veteran third baseman, George Doty was out of several games due to injuries, and did not really get started. Next year Tom Platten, Qwho played sensationally in his only game, the victory over Barnardl, Bob Dixon, and other Freshmen will be up on the Varsity, learning the ropes. With a seasoned team, plus tried and tested recruits, the 1935 team should go far toward getting Collegiate back where it belongs in Private School competition.
