From the time our mothers, singing Rock-a-bye, Baby, lull us to sleep when we are very young, the importance of music in our lives continually grows. The first lullabies are soon followed by our own versions of Pop, Goes the Weasel, London Bridge, and 'fMary Had a Little Lamb, classics familiar to everyone. At Sunday School, all dressed up -in organdy or velveteen with tremendous sashes, we sing in sweet, innocent, tones Jesus Loves Me and God Is Love. Does the course-of events sound familiar? It is the pattern followed by most small boys and girls. Now we are six and in September we climb the steps to Collegiate. The Primary Grades are the days of Billy Goat Gruff and the French songs, Frere Jacques and Alouetta. At Christmas, dressed in cheesecloth angel costumes, with tinsel halos and small candles, we lisp Angels We Have Heard on High, as we climb into the windows at the church. Spring arrives and, at Sauer's Gardens, our proud parents watch as the Farmer Takes His Wife, and We Put Our Right Foot In, We Take Our Right Foot Out. When we move across the courtyard to the other building, we hear music echoing through the halls. Glee Club days are with us, and we find It's a Grand Night for Singing. Of course, there are those of us who will never forget when we were wistful maidens in Patience or red-coated dragoons wearing heavily-plumed helmets. All through school Dem Bones Have Been Rising Agin, and the teams have obeyed the cheerleaders' pleas to mow the team down. Each year we harmonize on school buses and sing raucously on Baby Day, with the teachers slightly frowning. Who can forget the dim lights and soft music, not to mention the rock and roll, at the annual dances at Collegiate. At lunch we tap time with our feet while the jukebox plays our favorite records. Our hearts thrill when at the Mosque we recognize some musical composition that we first heard on a victrola, as we sat in the ladder-backed green chairs of Miss Cowles' room. In church we know the words to many hymns, because they become a part of our lives as we sing them each week in chapel. All too soon graduation day arrives. Our memories of this June evening will linger in our minds forever associated with music. The Seniors, carrying red roses and wearing full white dresses, walk down the aisle to the stirring notes of Pomp and Circumstancef' Music is in the air at Collegiate. Not only in our singing do we attain harmony, but also in the atmosphere of our whole school life. Harmony is achieved by each student's cooperation and the combined efforts among classes, students and teachers, and teams. It is sometimes hard to keep the melody clear, true, and smooth. As a monotone can spoil a whole song, so can one student create discord by being out of harmony with the rest of the school. An allegro atmosphere pervades, however. Staccato emphasis is given by tests .and examinations, The noise of students in halls and at lunch reaches a fortissimo, But there are a few moments, 'tho rare, when the stillness of chapel or a Thanksgiving program settles over us. The Crescendo of school life builds until it is time to leave Collegiate. So far, the overture and first movement have been played. Collegiate has helped to make this much of the sym- phony of our lives a beautiful experience. Collegiate has given us the preparation and the appreciation so that we may play our parts in the rest of the performance. . . , Send us from thy presence quickened Unto only high desire That each heart in its palladium Keep alive the sacred fires. 9 HAIL, COLLEGIATE 150' Hail, Collegiate, we thy children See thee noble, know thee wise, As we learn to read thy vision In thy clear, far-seeing eyes. From the silver torch thou raiseth, Light our lamps from day to day. Haec sunt mea ornamentan Let us hear thy pure lips say. Hail, Collegiate, our Athena, This libation here we pour. All our hearts, our strong endeavors Touch and bless them we implore. Send us from thy presence quickened Unto only high desire That each heart in its palladium Keep alive the sacred fires. NIGHT CLUB SINGER ANVE WALKER FRENCH GIRL KATI' BRINKLET , . .FAITHFUL WIFE APVNI' BOSTWICK , ., ,. ,, ., . DIVORCEE TIME: 1978 SETTING Memory Manor at Virginia Beach PROPHECY The Wives is Miss Robins' first dramatic attempt but is ex- pected to gain wider acclaim than her novels, My Hear!- breaking Torch, Tale of a Tall Girl, and The Mystery of lhe Duke Devil. Miss Robins and her husband, the eminent satirist, spend their spare time on their palatial estate in Durham, North Carolina, breeding their famous line of Irish setters, sired by Lake's first pet, Rex. The former Miss Nancy johns, prominent socialite and wife of the wealthy Dr. David, has graciously consented to pro- duce Miss Robins' lavish new play, Mrs. David is now liv- ing in Charlottesville for convenience. As leader of the Vir- ginia Social Set, she has made popular her original creation, the johns Twirl, which is actually a different hair-do for every day of the year. Miss Bunnell, well-versed in the theatrical' arts from her many hours of research done at the Barksdale Theater, di- rects this production. She won an academy award last sea- son for the best foreign film of the year, The Pole and I. This year her nature series on the habits of the duck-billed pladypus is expected to receive even wider acclaim. Miss Bunnellls most recent outside interest is the opening of her new night club, The Terry Tiger. Miss Sally Scherer has fulfilled one of her lifetime ambitions in writing modern music. This dates back to her early days of musical toil with Miss Cowles at Collegiate School. Miss Scherer, as everyone hoped she would, finally married and is living on Grove Avenue in Richmond. She is now on the Board of Directors at the Country Club so that she may spend even more time there, Miss Henley, as all of her old friends expected she would, writes the lyrics for popular songs, including the songs in The Wives, which are expected to become overnight hits. Some of her latest smashes have been I'm Filling-My Jewelry Box With Bracelets From You, Water Over Warsaw, and 'KPaper Drive Blues. Miss Henley has given up her career as a horsewoman and is practicing to swim the channel, Miss Hervey, the talented musical director, gives her touch of genius to the music of Henley and Scherer. Soon after her graduation from Collegiate, she began a successful ca- reer both as a wife and a musician. Miss Robins is very fortunate in gaining the services of her classmate, who sel- dom consents to leave the Florida sunshine. After her year of training in rhythmics at Collegiate, Miss Shinnick embarked on her spectacular rise to fame in the field of choreography, Her greatest triumph was last sea- son's hit play, Hyde and Ga Seek, written, incidentally, by her young husband. Despite the fact that many of her plays open in New York, Mi-ss Shinnick insists on living in Rich- mond and is now serving as the president of the Daughters of the Confederacy. 34 Miss Epps, who designs the costly Beautiful Belva bathing suits, has done the lavish costuming for Miss Robins, play. She began her career as the lovely bride in the Collegiate Fashion Show. One thing led to another, and now she de- signs all the clothes for the annual spectacular. Miss Epps and her husband live on a plantation noted for its beautiful gardens, which show the touch of her green thumb. Miss Robins wanted her whole class to return for the cast- ing of her play, but it was only after much difficulty that she succeeded in getting jo Ellen Redford. It is ironic that she plays the baby-sitter because of the trouble she had finding one for her own twelve children. Miss Redford re- cently won the nationwide contest for the most original recipe--her entry, the Ring Cake. The mischievous Betty Hunt plays a comedienne, a role comparable to that of Gracie Allen on television. As the carefree wife of a V.P,I. graduate, she is now raising three little engineers. just recently Betty turned in her old car and bought the 1978 Sputno-copter. To buy the atoms for the atomic-powered car, she has decided to sell platformed tennis shoes for short basketball players. The popular actress, Whitney Braxton, remembered by her old friends as Martha Horsley, has taken time out from movie commitments to appear in her old friend Lake's play. Although she gives magnificent performances, she never learns her lines until the eve of opening night. She spends her spare time with her husband and children on their ranch near San Francisco. The beautiful Jane Hubbard plays the other comedienne, a dumb blonde. She is the only one from the class of ,58 who hasn't married. It's not that she lacks charrng it is just that she is looking for the right man. He must be over five feet, speak French fluently, and have a clear record with the precinct. 35 ' . ' 'il -- ' Y' . rf- ' X K -ye 1:44, . in re f s U ii iff ' ' . ' f - X , ' ' ee wt Miss Lloyd portrays the coquette in this production. In the past she has played opposite such well-known leading men as Coy Rollins, Ron jobbins, and Mowry Lartin, Miss Lloyd began her career as a bath-ing suit model but had such a large male following that she was forced to quit the job. She now works in night clubs, since she could never make those early nine o'clock appointments. Miss Jefferson has the leading role, which she is well pre- pared for, because of her four years at dramatic camp dur- ing high school. She is not only a popular night club singer of great talent, but she also has begun a modeling school for all Collegiate girls with poor posture. This school is highly recommended by Mrs. Wood. Miss Gary Walker, known on the continent as La Petite de Paris, arrived on the U.S.S. Windsor Way in time for re- hearsals. She brought her three children, a poodle, and her husband, the Marquis de Beauxhommes. Miss Walker plans to entertain all her old friends by treating them to an- other French dinner similar to one she gave years ago at her home. This time she will take everyone to Paris for the meal. Miss Brinkley was easily found in her New York apartment at 1414 Park Avenue. She was giving her children home permanents, insisting that they, too, must learn by experi- ence. Miss Brinkley has been cast as the faithful wife, al- though she is best known at Collegiate for dating many boys. Her close friends heard her vow in her senior year that she would turn over a new leaf, and it seems she has done just that, Miss Anne Bostwick, who portrays Deirdre Dibilvoir, a gay divorcee, having just lost her eighth husband, finds this role characteristic of her younger days. Soon after the play closes, Miss Bostwick will elope with her ninth husband. This was to be a secret, but as usual she has told everyone- one by one. Miss Bostwick has appeared in various summer theater attractions at White Lake, Chester, Sandy Point, and Jamestown. 36 Elizabeth Rivex Smith UPPER p N.. 1 1 Elizabclh Arrarmrth Agnes .Tafl 'fulchnu fx W' Sidney Roberts Kelly Nancy Roberta Sheriff AV M L ff A f L, . iv 1 'A A 'Z M' ' . if ii R -f 5 e-f n if Mar are!
