I ef EDITORIAL ALL children grow up - all except oneg but everyone who has ever been young has met him. For he is Youth. He, like other children, realized soon after he was two that he must grow up. Yet he was different. He foresaw the responsibilities of a man, he understood the tasks to be undertaken, so, as other children had done, he fell out of his perambulator and got lost - lost in the most wonderful adventure of all child- hood, Neverland. Yes, Pan is the personification of youth. He is happiness, he is innocence, he is joy. Have you never met him? Why of course you have! Perhaps you didn't recognize him exactly as Pan, but you could see where some of his magic dust had fallen. And the minute you found it you were whirled away into Neverland. The cynics among us will maintain that they have never been in Neverland. But look about you, you are in it now. For though you never quite realized it, Collegiate is our Neverland. For in it have been lived the most exciting, the most despondent, the most dramatic and most triumphant moments of our lives. For Collegiate, like Neverland, is founded on the beautiful thoughts of children. Its bases are the faith of little children and its structures are their hopes. lt is a place where if you wish hard enough dreams come true, and if you stay long enough you will never forget. The friends, the duels, the Tinkerbells, and the pirates all make Collegiate our Neverland. This Neverland is a combination of things both fanciful and true. It is a place of construction. Building and storing are done here in a manner that seems far removed from the monotonous labor usually associated with these two words. For the building and storing that we are doing is not easily done, but when it is complete it is sturdy, strong and not easily shaken. The purpose of this building and storing that we are doing may seem remote and unrelated now, but, as it has proved with so many before, it will prove worthwhile to us in later years to have spent our childhood in the Neverland of Collegiate. But there is a Wendy among us, a Wendy who feels that her troup must disband. She knows that she must gather up her children and leave, never to return. There is something calling that is just beyond, and the Wendy in us pushes gently forward out of Neverland to find it. We know somehow that when we have once left, it will be too late to look back, for we shall never return. The adventures, stories, and flying are all part of the past, a wonderful, glorious, full past, but one that must soon end. Perhaps in leaving we feel a catch in our throats, but we have the secure feeling that what we are doing is right. We will not see Neverland again and perhaps not even Peter, unless, of course, we are lucky enough to catch a glimpse of him when he visits our children. Then once more we shall hear him crow his own praises, smile showing all his first teeth, beckon with his small hand to a place far in the distant sky, and shout, The second to the right and straight on 'till morning. '56 B Team Hockey '56 Secretary of Class '56 Senior Standards Council '56 GOLD TEAM - 4 years 33 PROPI-IECY ON Wednesday, june 4, 1976, the marriage of Miss Amy Deane Moiiitt to the Rev. Pamuel Seters was held at Grace Covenant Church, interrupting Deane's 13,873rd church supper. The marriage was a spectacular attraction since the Reverend per- formed it himself. There was, however, a slight interruption, for just as the strains of Lohengrin were dancing from the strings of the renowned violinist, Maestro Suzanne Bourne, a commotion was raised in the back of the church. How could you have lost a thing like that? wailed Deane to the frantic Miss Ashby Dunn, the maid of honor. But he was here a minute ago. I saw him, gasped Ashby. This detail was soon set straight when the Reverend was found sitting beside Miss Martha Kellogg discussing Byron's greatest work, Childe Harolde. After the impressive ceremony, the wedding party progressed to the estate of Mrs. Carol Dwight, the author of that Hart-rending best-seller, The Day I Shot Truman. Mrs. Dwight stopped her baby-kissing campaign long enough to autograph the bride's copy of the book. Across the room we find that illustrious corpuscle chaser, Dr. Louise Florance, who is said to rush in where hemoglobins fear to tread. She is deep in conversation with the business tycoon, Mrs. Mary Bruce Von Ive-a-Man, whose magazine articles, Better Basement Bargains, have been a tremendous success. Mrs. Ive-a-Man is one of the most versatile business women of the day. She heads the swimming staff of the Y, raises singing roosters, and was recently named Mother of the Year. Our attention is turned from this interesting conversation to the dazzling arrival of Mme. Susan Stokes. Mme. Stokes, who is now a prominent night club singer, glided in with a rose in her teeth, singing in her mellow voice, Dance With Me, Herbertf' Many of the guests rushed out to see the sky-writing done by Brownie Lee, the aeronautics expert. Miss Lee is not only a leader in the aviation field, but also raises apple orchards in several states. From her plane, the Fruit Fly, she waved best wishes and buzzed on her way. So l said to Fauntleroy, 'Fauntleroy,' I said, 'you must do something about it. Do you hear me, FauntleroyP' I said, gushed Elizabeth Wise, prominent socialite and wife of the wealthy potato chip manufacturer. For Betsy Neal, creator of Neal's Niblets, the gossip column, was interviewing some of the most outstanding guests. Betsy was following up the tip that she had gotten about Mr. Wise's latest invention, a dietetic potato chip. Have you a last word for us, Mrs. Wise? inquired Betsy. 35 Why of course, replied Elizabeth. Buy Wise - Slenderizeln Panic! squawked a very red face that had just sprawled headlong into the caviar. The congregation gasped in amazement to see Ann Huxley, prominent Virginia poet, sitting atop a plate of sandwiches. She soon, however, regained both balance and dignity and resumed her conversation with the gay young divorcee, 'lane X. lt should be here noted that X is not her real name, but after the third husband Miss Durham assumed this to give her an added air of mystery, and to avoid confusion. Miss X, who is head of the Virginia Poetry Society, was discussing Miss Huxley's latest poem, On First Looking Into Chapman's Hockey. Bernadine, Bernadette, Bernice, and just plain Bernard escorted in their mother, the matronly Mrs. Mary Reid Beanblossom. Mrs. B., soon after her biology course at Collegiate, began raising shrimp, children, and blood pressure, and is today a prominent horticulturist in Virginia. We find her peering over her pince-nez at Jeanne Hervey, who arrived breathlessly from the gala opening of Iolly Ieanne's Pool Hall. This is only a branch of her already thriving establishment on Henri Road. Hallelujah, Brethren, chanted out social worker, Katherine Williams, who never misses an opportunity to hold a session. At any gathering she immediately passes around a collection plate while singing That Old Rotten Sheet. A blast of trumpets announced the arrival of that daring vocalist and bubble dancer, Miss Sally Montgomery. It is rumored that she was offered all the gold in Fort Knox for a single performance, but replied in a wistful tone, Skip it. It's not Sylvie! Drifting among the guests, we find one of our most intriguing characters, Hopalong Wharton. Lonesome Jane, as she is called by her good friends, lives now at the Broken Bones Inn and is the art adviser of the new movie, Thud, I'm a Many Splintered Thing. Also, among the guests was Admiral Anne McCrackle the Errst lady Admiral in the U. S. Navy. Admiral McCrackle is in charge of the Misery Department at Bainbridge, Maryland, and has just succeeded in abolishing crew cuts for Navy recruits. Miss Cary Spicer left the party in a hurry to put through a call to Maryland. In her hasty exit she almost knocked over Mrs. Harris Hemingway, the game hunter. We have yet to find out just what type of game she hunts, but it is an established fact that she hunts. just as the party was about to end Champ Roberts came riding upon the Lady Wonder Horse. Champ thwarted the horse's predictions by staying single and now runs a beauty shop for Champ's'Chubby Chums. Behind Champ we find her faithful customer, Daily Holmes. Daily was the first to go into Champ's salon as Daily and come out Small. As we leave we hear Daily shouting her classic remark, I'm gonna get my driver's license tomorrow. 36 UPPER NANCY Cooxn LIIIILLA TOWNl.HY SUSAN DAIINHI' LAunA IRVINIE RoInan1'soN Pwrxalzs fILADDING SIMPKINS l'rr.cirlrnt l'irr-Prmidrnl Srrrrlary Treaxurn FuANcIas BAIIIIAIIA STIIAIIT Dunornv WlNKlFlliI.ll HIEILNE KAIILI-1 KATIIEIUNE Hvnn BAI,IoIv BENNETT EWINIS FIam:I1snN HARNER E'-IUBHTN PAUIA EI.IzAnm'II KATHERINE BROWN KAREN Lan VIRGINIA DIANNI1 l'l.0IlIiNCli LAUIIITIEN NfCDi1WEl.l, Momuu. If you are able to save money, you can succeedg if not, you will fail! You may not think so, but you will lose as sure as fate- for the seed of success is not in you. Life insurance is the only plan which not only assists you in saving money but guarantees the safest invest- ment and the most secure protection. When you start out on your business career, start right. Put your dollars to work and save for the future the life insurance way.
