And ! have seen the inevitable march of calendar days, marking some with the circle of joy, others with the black border of youth’s disappointment. Clouds have come and gone — swift-moving black furnaces stoked with trouble, and hazes which just managed to obscure my horizon. I have been a moon, with phases all my own, and satellites that be- longed only to me at a given moment. But I have also been a satellite. 1 have heard the foghorn, and walked in wild winds, because I liked them; yet, I have hidden from these same winds in the warmth of a room. People have come and gone from me. Some I have watched out of sight with a long look, others I have waved onward. All have gone to the making of me. I have teetered on a tightrope four years long, juggling philosophies and balancing theories, trying to live for the moment, learn from the past, and prepare for the future, All the while on the tightrope. Angered, I have hurled impassioned epithets at my world, and refused to bear it, struggling to shrug it off, off and away from my shoulders. I have shouted all the big words, in a big, rich voice — “Equal- ity!” “Peace!” “Freedom! 11 - — and 1 tried to do my little bit to breathe life into those big, empty words. And 1 have known such nights as even the stars could envy — when ! sailed across the sky hanging on to the tails of my own idea, or followed a new love into the sun. I have experienced a sense of the Sublime and the Ridiculous. And I have learned that living is, every now and then, to reverse a never.
