The 1950 Alla Rah is dedicated to you, each Presby Pete who, by your enthusiasm and diligence, has made it possible for the college to regain and retain the C of E Spirit. This is your book, created by you, for you. Enjoy it. 6 Everyone at the College of Emporia knows Pete the Presby, the little man whose mischievous face and in- domitable spirit invade all school events-the versatile fel- low who is at home on the football field, in the glee club, in the classroom, ,before the footlights. Wherever there is a C of E student, there is Presby Pete. From September to June Pete sparks all the activities on the campus. So follow Pete through the nine school months, recalling with him the people, places, and events that made the I949-50 year memorable. of W Q '9 -+9 X fb n QR l w J, I kdilllwvdyix PW ff. A week later, however, in a powerful second half drive, the Presbies beat a stubborn William Jewell team 20-14. Jim Naughton and Don Ek, substi- tute quarterback, were outstanding in offensive play. C. of E. entered the Kansas conference tilt with a smashing 34-O victory over McPherson College. ln the following week's game with Baker, who went on to win the '49 conference championship, C. of E. lost a heartbreaking 7 to 6 struggle. The game remained scoreless until the final 3 minutes when the Presbies scored to take a 6-O lead. Baker came back with a dazzling drive and in four plays made a touchdown and converted the winning point. Bill Pemberton, right half-back, was the outstanding C. of E. ground gainer. ln their second consecutive conference loss, the Presbies were unableito score against the Bethany Swedes, who won the rather controversial game I3-O. Dave Tremaine, disabled during most of the season, picked up 76 yards with his accurate passing. 20 -Before a Homecoming crowd of 2,000 fans, C. of E. dropped another 7-6 game to Kansas Wes- leyan. C.- of E, led 6-O at half-time, but in the final half, played in pouring rain, Wesleyan eked out a one point lead. ln their next game, the Presbies crushed the Bethel Graymaroons 42-19. Playing terrific offensive ball, C. of E. scored l4 points in the first five minutes of play. The most spectacular run of the season was Don Durand's 97 yard return of a Bethel kick-off. C. of E's. passing offense was clicking, with Bob Swedberg and Steve Bodnarchuk catching three passes each. Wesley Thew's educated toe was responsible for the six extra conversion points. ln the game of the year, the Presbies whipped the highly favored Ottawa Braves by a score of I3 to 7. Not since i935 had a C. of E. team beaten Ottawa. In what was perhaps the most in- spiring game the Fighting Presbies have played in' many years, they upset the Braves and helped keep Ottawa from winning their 8th straight con- ference title. Throughout the season Hamada, Smithe, Chai, Majkrzak, Boban and Sherman were outstanding in the line. With only two of their members graduating, the Presbies look forward to an out- standing year in football in 1950. T Q 2 fy 4 f X 2 X , f I f f nl X f Ky f f W Z f ,A M y v X M X 111 V fy!!! The pep club worked especially hard on rallies and burial services for defeated opponents. During basketball season they were on hand for every game in their white sweaters with the big red E's. The club sponsored social events during the year with special emphasis on after-game dances. Many hours were spent decorating for dances and teaching new yells and pep songs to the student body. S ponsor Here near the center of the Alla Rah, with the book's reputation already established or ruined, theeditor feels it safe to print this picture reflecting the confusion and mixed emotions of a typical yearbook staff. This sad photograph was taken at a time when meet- ing the first p.ublisher's deadline seemed vir- tually impossible. But the situation was not quite so desperate as these miserable coun- tenances would lead one to believe. Diligence, cooperation, midnight staff meetings, dozens of packs of cigarettes, and innumerable aspir- ins conquered all, and here is the Alla Rah - completed and presented to you with the hope that it has succeeded in capturing and record- ing the highlights of i949-50. 54 llll The primary task of a student Christian group on a campus is to create a living fellow- ship -- to draw together a group of persons who are committed to Christ, and through work, prayer, study and play to mould them into such. a living fellowship. The College of Emporia has such a group in the movement known as CHI ALPHA. The Chi Alpha mean- ing Christ first recognizing the necessity of such a fellowship on the campus came into being in, September of this school year. By combining the YMCA and the YWCA groups which have been separate campus organiza- tions the newly formed movement of Christian students found that its great strength was to come not only from cooperating with the program objectives of the Y groups but also in taking advantage of such programs projects studies and activities as were being sponsored by the World Student Christian Movement and many other agencies through which student work is being advanced today A committee of fifteen students elected by the group have the responsibility of planning and leading the programs of this small com munity in action. Chi Alpha is vitally in- terested not only in local campus problems, but in serving humanity wherever there is need on what may be called' the world cam- pus. Therefore, the interest and activities of Chi Alpha vary from motor tours to interesting sites, to carrying on a twenty-four hour ex- periment among members' who keep journals of their attempts to practice Christian prin- ciples on a campus. , Other programs included the following: a series of interviews of professional men and women a re-examination of the meaning of Christian vocations a study of the problems of student life in other lands religious movies retreats for the purpose of study and gaining spiritual renewal a survey of the Churchs stand on world problems a look at what other Christian movements are doing today Into such a fellowship have come members of all churches and through such a fellowship the Chi Alpha students continue to witness the fact that where two or three are gathered together they can and must have Christ in their midst MEMBERS Jaquith M Allen Koets Mordy Sagheb Parkhurst G Munson Redfield McColIoch Wullschleger Barrett B Anderson Sarem Prichard Heirlch Seavey A Apel Mayers Cheney Carnahan Sgogren Wolf Lockard Acosta Kenerson Good R Force M Force Thompson Dunlap Slothower Wilson Leugemors Perkins Owens Schertz Salser Hirsch B Carpenter Huebner Whitney Valyer Havens Miller Donald Davies sponsors 'the group 1 Il ,D ' 7 . 1 . . Miss Jean Woodward, heading a capable staff, plans a year round program of exercise, relaxation and fun for the coeds. Some of the exciting and interesting aspects of the physical education program include competition for class honors in swimming and volleyball, note- books for use in camp work, creative outlets through the modern dance classes, and tennis matches, Instruction in recreational leadership brought about such projects as a faculty chil- dren's Christmas party, a student-faculty Play Night, a Freshman Cookout, and a Square Timber! Dance Instruction Night in preparation for the annual Square Dance Jamboree. The interests of almost any girl can be met by the varied courses offered-archery, bad- minton, shuffleboard, social and square danc- ing, basketball, darts-and the emphasis is on cooperation and friendliness of spirit. Develop- ment of mental and social concepts is stressed in the program, as well as physical develop- ment, practical knowledge of health rules and constructive use of leisure time. f ,',f , u 1 6 CLHSSRUUHI . 4 ..'1l W BllSIlElBHll The intramural 'season proved to be one of the most exciting, closest races in several years of play.
