The governing body of the boys' dorm operated in a manner which left little to be expected of them by the residents of the dorm. Each year the boys' dorm becomes an increasingly popular center of student activity here on the C. Of E. campus. . OFFICERS President . .... . . GEORGE CROCKER Secretary . . 4 . .... This year, under the leadership of Mrs. Lesh, ho-usemother, and Nancy Colburn, house president, the dorm sponsored the annual student-teacher reception, open house, and several teas, in addition to the many informal social gather- ings in the parlors. Despite a few inconveniences, such as six in line for an iron on Saturday, the girls live in an atmosphere which, although not always conducive to study, is always friendly, interesting, entertaining, and never, never monotonous. But with much improvement still to be made, Coaches Brown, Wasson, Prather, and Vanek succeeded in showing that C. of E. still deserved the title, Fighting Presbies . Pittsburg State won the season's opener, 21-0. Our boys held their own until late in the. third quarter when the Gorillas, 30-pounds-per-man weight advantage began to show. Byrne's broken arm and Weakley,s dislocated shoulder continued a series of team crippling injuries begun when Burkley broke a bone in his ankle during early season scrimmage. Outstanding play against Bethel and McPherson earned Freshmen Durand, Pem- berton, Alumbaugh, Wells, and Guinn starting berths. Toler and Hayes played out- standing defense against Baker, but precision punting by Baker's Adams and Presby fumbles spelled defeat, 0-17. Poor pass defense gave Bethany a 28-13 win. On Homecoming, a penalty set up a last minute Kansas Wesleyan touchdown and a win 13-6. The expert passing of Durand and Christenson made this a good game. The only effective Presby ground attack of the season overran a mediocre Sterling team. Painter and Ek scored but Hunter's tally was nullified by a penalty. Final score, 14-O. Following a 0-33 loss on Ottawa's soggy field, the Presbys journeyed to Winfield for their final and most impressive game of the season. Southwestern scored early and retained that lead to win, 18-12. C. of E. scored as the first half ended, following a fCo11li1111c'zf on page 122j 51171 C. of E. The third quarter was shortened Q12 minutesj and may have been the margin of vgctory. The second Emporia score came in the final quarter and climaxed an 80-yard march. The Presby forward wall of Webb, centerg Fiatte, Spurlock, Wullschleger, guards, Guinn Fankhouser, tackles, Martin, Jenkins and Hays, endsg literally bowled over the Builder defense. This was the final game of their college careers for Webb, Lodle, and Ireland. Ireland did play later in the Mo-Kan Bowl game. The Bn squad had its day also with a 6-6 tie against Washburn. The second team game on Armistice Day resulted in a 0-26 loss to Emporia State-'s B squad. Sharpe and McGahey were consistent ground gainers for the Presby juniors. B squad games are one of the new policies which will keep football improving at C. of E. 51223 '? 1943 Basketball Season C. of E. is on the athletic comeback trail. Slowly but surely the Red and White is moving back into the position of its former greatness. With the return of every one of its first ten varsity members almost a certainty, the Presby hoopsters are a real threat for the Kansas Conference crown next winter. Starting the season slowly, the Presbies lost nine of their first ten contests. A 47-40 victory over the William Jewell quintet on the auditorium floor marked the turning point of the season. From here the squad went on to win five straight victoriesg the string was climaxed by a heart-stopping 57-55 defeat of Baker University at Baldwin. After closing their home season by defeating Sterling College, the cagers journeyed to Colorado Springs to engage Colorado College in a pair of contests. Badly hampered by the high altitude the Presbies dropped both games. The final tabulation showed the Red and White with nine victories and fourteen defeats. High individual scoring honors went to Jack Smith. The stringy center averaged more than fourteen points per contest to lead the Presby scorers. The C. of E. BU team faired slightly better than the varsity with nine victories for eighteen attempts. Miss Lucille Porter f 123 1 SMHH' 4Esf 4VF5 00N Q '-ff' CK SMI TH .. And a dull season it would have been had it not been for the appearance of Freshman Wallace Hinkle and the improve- ment of last year's returning tracksters. Hinkle Was' un- defeated in the half-mile and climaxed his Freshman year by Winning the Kansas Conference crown in that distance. Only other Presby to place in the Conference meet was Sophomore Eddie Johns who took third place honors in the high jump. A C. of E. relay team composed of Marvin Frankamp, Ken Sherman, Charlie Ireland, and Wallace Hinkle traveled to Lawrence to Win fourth place in the famous Kansas Relays held in April. Prospects for next year, besides those already mentioned, include Bill Stevens, Don Gill, and Marvin Frankamp. 51321 T-? And ahit it was, C. of E.'s first attempt at competing in Collegiate baseball in more than twenty years. Hindered at the offset by lack of finances, the Presby baseball enthusiasts were not to be stopped by such a trivial matter. The C. of E. Players donated their services and a play, The Night of January 16 , was presented to raise the necessary funds for equipment. Under the auspices of the Athletic Depart- ment, a baseball diamond was erected on the football practice field. Badly hampered by a lack of pitching strength, the Presbys won only two of their scheduled seven contests. A pair of early season tilts with Kansas University were cancelled because of poor weather. If we were to name individual stars, we would have to place Calvin Hunter's name at the top of the list. Not only was Cal a fine pitcher, but his hitting and base running contributed heavily to both Presby wins. Seldom has a sport received such enthusiastic approval and support as did this year's baseball endeavor. Players, coaches and students alike feel it is only a matter of time until the Kansas Conference crown finds its way into the trophy case in Anderson Memorial Library. Kansas Wesleyan 5 . .
