And what a thrilling, inspiring and profit- able voyage it is! Prompted by the spirit of adventure and the desire for knowledge we are lured on and on from sea to sea, from land to land, from sky to sky. The world of nature -- chemical, physical, biological, the course of human history - economic, political, social, moral, and the interpretation of the universe in terms of our own needs, our responsibilities and opportunities, exercise our highest powers. Never satisfied, we find joy not in what we achieve but in achieving, not in complete realization but in the hope of attaining. The fellowship we have in this venture with the hardened, weather- beaten sailors as well as with the uninitiated on their maiden voyage, con- stitutes the unexpected discovery and the unlooked for value. Sharing in each other's defeats, co-operating in each other's successes and triumphs, we are bound together by ties of mutual purposes and common interests. A deeper, broader, richer and more enduring fellow feeling gives us a love for service and an assurance of faith in our fellow men. When on graduation we join the company of the alumni whose hearts beat strong and warm for The College of Emporia, and take our places in the larger fellowship of graduates of all other colleges, an in- creased sense of responsibility comes with our increased sense of power in numbers. But the crowning experience of this voyage and the life to which we are introduced is the growing appreciation of the beauty, the grandeur, and the sulolimity of life, and the deepening faith in the Creator of all, the Alpha and the Omega, The Way, the Truth, and the Life which is the motto on our seal. The acknowledgement and prayer of Henry Cary Shuttleworth voices our allegiance. They'I,'e backed the fine things, giren successful parties, sported Kings ancl Queens upon the sea, and snealferl away for a clay never to be forgotten. Heeause time marches on so quieltflg, it is with regret that the creu' of '41 pulls flown its sails. The rogage is rlone-it's been such fun. ' HAUN, THEODORE ................. It was a gala night and the ship's deck was scrubbed and polished and entertainment filled the place with merriment.. Activity is characteristic of this ship-it never stands idle. Its crew is full of health and vigor. Port is not far off with this shipg and if the rest of the voyage compares with what has gone before, we are bound to see advancements in the crew and a new importance for the ship itself. Their number has decreased a few but originality is not lacking. -And so the Sailor goes on in his Log to tell of the Halloween party given by the Sophomore Class in October .... '4Mason deck stood out in full array and what fun was had! Surely no one can forget the decorations and the clever costumes. If predictions are correct this ship's EXPLORATION on the C. of E. will yield valuable products for it is a Well-built ship and manned by a com- petent crew. He rushed up to a group of students and breathlessly said, Pardon me, fellas, but do you know where I can pay my class dues A? I gotta pay 'em ,cause I don't want to miss the Student Commission picnic. - Sure, one of them replied, go find Jack Baird-- he's the treasurer. -'tThank's a lot! answered the freshman and hurried otf. The dues collected by the Student Commission are a vital part of the stu- dent program for the year. Without them, some of the student activities would be sadly crippled, for money from the commission fund goes to help sponsor freshman and sophomore class parties, junior-senior banquet, 'tsneak day, picnics and dances. It also includes class picture in the Alla Rah and a publication of the College Life, issued bi-monthly. The Student Commission, consisting of members elected from the 'var- ious classes, helps serve as a committee in organizing and preparing school activities, student elections, and chapels. This organization acts as a rap- port between the faculty and student body. The problems are met and dis- cussed and a fair decision is the result. Anyone can tell you of the good homemade candy Which the girls sold to solve their financial situation. Another highlight on the Chi Sig program included the annual Puff and Pant Prom, for girls only. Leap Week was sponsored again by this organization, and was climaxed by a Gay Nineties Dance. An event that is looked forward to each year is the never-failing invitation to the Hirsch1er's for a Christmas party. In the course of the evening, games were played Which, to the delight of everyone, brought out Dean Hirschler's amazing dual personality. Another memorable occasion was a buffet supper given at the Senate Apart- ments by Miss Pearl Weidman. Though discoveries began near the end of the season, too late to bring home many victories, there was still a certain satisfaction in knowing that the work had been led by a courageous, clean- cut man, who has won the respect and admiration of all-our coach-Ted Warren! The co-captains, Theodore Haun and Howard McCoy, as leadsmen marked the way well and kept fighting 'til the very end! Co-Captain Co-Captain fa if , If Vik! 1 TED HAUN HOWARD MCCOY ATHLETIC With a new coach, a new system and a squad of about thirty men, the College of Emporia had a successful football .season in 1940. Starting with a game against Washburn, the Presbys met with five defeats and one tie. Throughout all these games they showed consistent improvement in both offensive and defensire power. In the seventh game with McPherson, the College was ifictor by a score of 7-0. The next week the Ottawa Braifes elfed out a 14-12 victory over the College by rirtiie of a College fumble on their own 15-yard line. The final game was played at home and was a fitting climax to a fine season. The score at the end of the third quarter was 7-0 in favor of Bethel, but a determined Presby squad came back to score two touchdowns in the final quarter for a 13-7 triumph. There were many nps and downs daring the .season but the one characteristic which was dominant was the fight and determination of the College team and en- thusiastic student body. Tinker , Haan and Howard McCoy were eo-captains of the '40 squad. Both are .seniors and McCoy also received the distinction of playing end on an All-State team which met the Missouri All-State in a post-season game. Too much credit cannot be given to Coach Ted Warren who is an excellent coach and the friend of every student on the campus. Thanks also to Duchy Carderelli, a former team mate of Ted's, who acted as line coach during most of the season. Though not successful in the niimber of games won, the basketball season was one of thrills and marked improvement in team play. At the first of the season, the Presbys eozild not seem to find the baslcet or hold other teams down but the last half of the season they developed a fast passing floor attach that brought them two ifietories over Bethel College and several close games. The Presbys were also the zfietim of a 98 to 25 score by Kansas Wesleyan but that can be for- gotten. Tinlfer Haan was high scorer for the College and one of the high scorers in the conference. And did you no- tice where he had his car parked the other night? Right under the boys' fire escape-trying to smuggle something or someone in the dorm John? Guess S. Marlin really would like to steady up with Garrison but the s'renuous competition offered by G. Braun and G. Scott certainly isn't helping him along any. Shame on you boys for bothering poor 'iShiftyf' Say wasn't that some party the boys threw for the girls the other week-end? Ten years of toil passed in clearing the land of trees, in plowing and fenc- ing the fields. But there was a spring in his step and a song in his heart of better days to come, of children, yes, grandchildren and great grandchil- dren, who would live after him and sow the fields and reap many rich harvests. For, he would say as he tilled the land, the soil is rich and deep and my work is well done. So he built a big house with solid foundations, sturdy oak rafters, and well fitted hardwood floors while other settlers watched and envied their fortunate and industrious neighbor. The year was 1880. Just thirty years had passed since John Wilson's plow first broke the sod. With a touch of annoyance, he no- ticed that the young farmer was leaving a strip of land unplowed near the stately old elm by the edge of the field. It saps the groundf' he thought. I'll tell Phil to cut it. We can use the fire-wood anyhow. So that spring the old tree came crashing to earth, to be trimmed and cut into fire-wood for the coming winter. But the faint beginnings of a gully had seen its enemy fall and laughed a malicious little laugh. And a few days later when the Waters of the young gully raged and tore at the earth it car- ried a seed which had shaken from the limbs of the fallen giant, carried it to the fence at the side of the field and left it wedged in a crevice. Thus does my tale begin, a strange story of a gully, a tree, and man. For the seed caught there in the crevice, though small and inconspicuous, was stubborn. And in its heart was a vague swell- ing ambition, an indefinable urge to grow, to live and become great. So it sent forth timid roots 1:11024114'11aiu11:xxuinroininioiu101010: 10:0101- l For: ! Twice that year, torrents raved and churned at the tender young tree, tearing away the rich earth and exposing its weak white roots to the elements. But the little tree grew braver and sent out longer and larger roots. Down through clay, rock and gravel these inquisitive and search- ing fingers found their way, around obstructions, through crevices, ever seeking deeper and firmer purchase on the earth until they were safe from the aggressive and constantly growing enmity of the gully. There in the protection of the fence row the proud heart of the tiny tree was lifted, a weed among weeds, yet different. 'Tor I have a purpose in life, it would Say. I will Send my roots deep, and when the frost kills the weeds I shall only lose my leaves and await the coming of spring. Then I shall send forth new leaves, and by the time the children of these weeds are grown, I shall be taller than they, for I am a tree. So, in time, the gully was tamed and currents flowed but slowly down a broad, shallow channel, biding their time while the tree grew in size and strength. Still the gully admitted no defeat but gradually length- ened its channel back across the field, ever closer to the house on the hill. The calendar read 1910. The exhausted soil was failing to produce profitable crops and the Wilson family had scattered to the four winds, leaving the farm to a series of rent- ers. The barn collapsed three years ago when the gully undermined its foundationsg the big house sags crazily, for the gully is beneath it, and rot and weather have weakened its sills. The windows are broken out, the doors are off their hinges, and the roof has lost patches of shingles. I heard yesterday that the CCC is in-- terested in making a game reserve of the landg the gully is to be checked by stone dams and trees are to be planted along the banks and down by the road.
