As expected, results were extremely close, and again the debate over Electoral College vs. popular vote became a heat- ed issue. Nixon was elected; things be- gan to happen on campuses na- tionwide. Tragedy struck in May 1970 when four students were killed by National Guardsmen during a peaceful protest on Kent State ' s campus.
