JOHN STEWART BRYAN PRESIDENT PRESIDENT BRYAN ' S MESSAGE Each session has its own essential character- istic. For 1939-40 there should be no doubt that the heightening of the will to win has been the attribute by which this session will be re- nnembered. All education and all training look to success, and no man purposely prepares for failure. All college work, then, is pointed to the goal of achievement in scholarship or business or the professions or in the wider and far more difficult field of the art of life. Full achievement can never be won by the easy way of using natural gifts alone: for every- one there comes a time of strain when the re- serves of energy must be tapped, when, in order to win. the final test is whether or not a man will put his whole heart into his courage and de- termination. The call to put out power is dramatized in athletic contests, especially on the football field: that is why these contests move the throng so deeply; but above and beyond the skill and gen- eralship of complicated plays, or the brilliance of occasional runs, there stands out the appeal to that unconquerable spirit that will not yield. That spirit was shown by our team this fall, and the power of that will is not to be measured by victory or destroyed by defeat, for such a will is not under the control of superior force or the power of chance: we know that in life, as in every other contest, when a college, city, or nation will not flinch nor yield, that community has lifted itself above the domination of events, and has entered into fellowship with the immor- tals. There was such a company of soldiers in Athens once, of whom Thucidydes wrote: They dared beyond their strength and hazarded beyond their hope, and In their extremity were not downhearted. If that ability and that will continue to inspire the student body of William and Mary, the fu- ture of the sons and daughters of this College will be In their own hands. COLLEGE OF WILLIAM AND MARY
