Biosraphical Sketch of Dr. J. A. C. Chandler, 1872-1934 Dr. Julian Alvin Carroll Chandler, presi- dent of the College of William and Mary from Jul)- 1, 1919, until the time of his death, May 31, 1934, was born at Guineys ' , Caro- line County, Virginia, October 29, 1872. He was the son of Joseph A. (M. D.) and Emuella Josephine (White) Chandler. Af- ter receiving the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the same institution in 1892, he attended Johns Hopkins University, where in 1896 he received his Ph. D. degree. In 191)4 he re- ceived the honorary degree of L. L. I . from Richmond College. His marriage to Lenore Burten Duke, of Churchland, Virginia, took place the year following his graduation from Johns Hopkins Univei ' sit} ' , July 10, 1897. Dr. Chandler began his career as an in- structor of History and English in 1891 and 1892 at the College of wllliam and Mary. From Williamsburg he went to Houston, Virginia, to become principal of the public schools from 1892 to 1893. In 1894 he became an instructor at Morgan College, in Baltimore, where he remained until 1896. He occupied this position during his graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University. From that time on. Dr. Chandler advanced rapidly in his chosen field of education, holding such responsible positions as dean of the faculty, 1896-99, acting president, 1899-1900, in the Woman ' s College, Richmond, Virginia; act- ing professor of history and literature at Rich- mond College, 1897-1900, and professor of English in the same institution, 1900-04; dean of the Richmond Academy, 1902-04; editor for Silver, Burdett and Company, pub- lishers, 1904-07; editor of the Virginia Jour- nal of Education, Richmond, 1907-09; pro- fessor of history, Richmond College, 1908- 09. In Jul ' , 19(19, he became superinten- dent of schools at Richmond, Virginia, and held this position until his appointment as president of the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia, on July 1, 1919. During this time he was given leave from October, 1918, to April, 1919, to serve as Chief of the Rehabilitation Division for Disabled Soldiers in Washington. He was director of liistor) ' and education, Jamestown exposition, 1907. He held membership in the Virginia Historical Society, American Histori- cal Association, Societ) ' for Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, National Education As- sociation, Kappa Alpha fraternity, and the Phi Beta Kappa Society. In 1919 he was chosen President of ' ilHam and Mary Col- lege, and completed nearly a fifteen year term. He died in Norfolk, Virginia, May 31, 1934. With his many activities as an educator, historian, scholar, editor, and president of a college, he foimd time to engage in the pre- paration of the following valuable historical works relating to Virginia: The History of Sufl-Vage in Virginia, 1901; .Makers of Vir- ginia History, 1904; Representation in Vir- ginia, 1896; Colonial Virginia, written in col- laboration with T. B. Thames, 1907; Mak- ers of American Histor) ' , written in collabora- tion with O. P. Chitwood, 1904; Virginia, written in collaboration with William L. Foushee, 1902. A Biographical Sketch of John Smith, with Selections from his Writ- ings, by Dr. Chandler, appeared in the Li- brary of Southern Literature in 1909, and his following contributions: The Beginnings of V irginia, 1584-1624; The South in English Politics, 1607-1763; The South in the Ex- pansion of the United States; The South in the Intepretation of the Constitution; and The Southern Inter-Colonial Relations, were published in The South in the Building of the Nation.
