Every addition to true knowledge is an addition to human power. — Horace Mann H AVE you studied the new Federal Tax laws? Have you considered in what way they might affect your estate after January 1, 1936? Now is the time to look into these most important matters. The President ' s House, College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia, a dignified home, on a charming campus, was erected in the late 18 th century, burned after the sur- render at Yorktown and restored at the private expense of Louis XVI. From this famous old College were graduated Presidents Jefferson, Monroe and Tyler and Chief Justice Marshall. o Ufv% 4t-u. i ' y idt- £ ' « — i X LI BP)IS e. Navy scored early, led by Ail-American Buzz Borries. Our line, supported nobly by Joe Bridges and Norman Murray yielded but little ground. Swede Yerkes and Stumpy Bryant were outstanding in the back- field. It was in this game that Joe Marino first showed his ability as a running guard. WILLIAM AND MARY— 20; EMORY AND HENRY— 8 The varsity won its first home game by defeat- ing the Wasp 20-8, and thereby avenged last years ' defeat. William and Mary ' s score came in the first quarter as the result of a pass from Charlie Shade to Wally Zables. The Wasps scored two points on a safety when Shade was tackled behind his own goal line. They threatened the varsity goal line time and time again, but the play in our line was too much for them. They were thru t back each time. They finally scored in the third period. On a fumble, recovered by Waddy Stew- art, the chance to score came. Shorty Trueheart scooted over the line standing up. Shortly after tliis Yerkes scored again. WILLIAM AND MARY— 0; V. P. I.— 6 Although outplaying V. P. I. during the entire second half and making seven first downs to V. P. I. ' s five, W. M. lost their second close game of the year. V. P. I. scored in the second quarter on a pass from Dickerson to Fittro. Three times in the last quarter the Braves threatened, but could not put the ball over the line. Both teams played defensive ball the first quarter, kick- ing frequently. Woodward did some good ball playing at this time, but was injured in a collision with Shade. In the first quarter, W. M. took the ball to the one-yard line, but failed to take it over, because of a penalty incurred. WILLIAM AND MARY— 0; GEORCE- TOWN— 3 On a field goal made in the first period, George- town defeated the Indians 3-0. Both teams had several chances to score. After a march up the field, the Indians held for three downs on the two-yard line; but on the fourth, Meglin kicked a perfect placement for the deciding points. Passes and runs made by the Richmond twins, Shade and Smith, availed little. Meglin tried two more field goals, but missed both. Several fumbles cost the Indians chances to get going and even placed them in dangerous situations. WILLIAM AND MARY— 15; ROANOKE— 6 The defeat of Roanoke kept William and Mary in the running for the Virginia Conference title with two victories and no defeats. Both teams played cautiously during the first quarter, punting frequently. Stumpy Bryant thrilled the fans with a 37-yard dash at the end of the period. With the beginning of the second period, Spack and Yerkes hit the line for large gains and finally scored for us. Bryant got off the same beautiful punts all during the game. Roanoke ' s only score came in the last quarter on a march down the field, with Pitzer doing most of the ball carrying. WILLIAM AND MARY— 0; V. M. I.— 13 William and Mary lost a tough game to an underdog V. M. I. team 13-0. The cadets there- by avenged last year ' s defeat handed them by the Indians. The play of Stewart was outstanding in the line, with Bryant and Yerkes doing most of the work In the backfield. WILLIAM AND MARY— 0; W.A.SHINGTON AND LEE— 7 The Generals scored seven points in the last quarter as a result of an intercepted pass and a placement kick. The score came after an exciting game in which William and Mary held the highly favored Generals to no score. Bryant, Zable, Stewart, Bridges, and Murray starred for William and Mary. With neither team able to do anything through the line, both teams took to the air and that ultimately was the downfall of the Indians. William and Mary came close to a score in tlie second period but an intercepted pass ruined their chances. The varsity made six first downs to the General ' s seven, WILLIAM AND MARY— 0; RICHMOND— 6 In our annual Turkey Day struggle Richmond avenged last year ' s defeat and finished up one of the varsity ' s most disastrous schedules. The game was played in a sea of mud. William and Mary didn ' t have one scoring chance. The Spiders threatened often during the game, but were held back by the sea of mud and the William and Mary line. Flickinger and Folcher led the attack for the Indians while Captain Franklin played his usual fine defensive game. The William and Mary Indians, making up for the V. P. I. defeat, played a steady game to beat Roanoke. It was their first victory on the western trip. Folcher, sophomore center, car- ried the brunt of the attack and chalked up twelve points while Elmore scored eleven. In one of the most bitterly contested games ever witnessed at Lexington, the fighting Indians beat Washington and Lee, last year Southern Conference and State champions, by a two-point margin. The fine play of both teams kept the huge crowd in a continual uproar. The lead changed hands several times, but the Indians finished too strongly for the Generals. The Indians continued to play good ball and won their third consecutive victory of the Western trip by defeating the V. M. I. cadets, who had beaten Duke University the night before. The Tri-Colors showed a noticeable weakness, with Ann Edwards making the only goal for William and Mary. On the first day of the Virginia Field Hockey Tournament, the Varsity Inst to the brilliant Sweet Briar eleven. In the second half, Brougher made the first goal for the varsity on .i well placed pass from Holladay, who made the only other goal for W. M. On the second day of the tournament, the Tri-Colors were defeated f{ r the second time by West- hampton. Spurred on by the loss of the first game, W. M. played a good game, but were unable to penetrate the red tunic ' s defense. At the conclusion of the tournament. Captain Beck, Edwards and Btnger were placed on the All-State team, while Brougher, Sterling, Whittaker, and Chamings received a berth on the Reserve team. Elizabeth Burger, after winning the position of goal keeper on the All South-East team, was sent to the National Tournament in Massachusetts, where she competed for a position on the All-. merican. On Homecoming Day, many of the old Hockey stars came back to William and Mary, but were unable to defeat the Varsity. The final game of the year was played in Washington, D. Many of the old W. M. sharpshooters were in the line-up, but showed that It had been a long time since they had played together. Sweet Briar tra eled to Williamsburg February 16, only to be sent home again on the short end of an 18-17 score. This was one of the closest games of the season and It was not until the final whistle blew that W. M. knew they had won the game. On February 20, the William and Mary Varsity played host to a sextette from Greenville, N. C. At half time, the Indlanettes were leading by ten points, playing a three-division game. Both teams played a fast game the second half on a two-division court, and at the final whistle, the score stood 25-25. The annual rivalry between William and Mary and Farmville State Teachers College resulted in a well played game, in which the Indlanettes came out victorious, 26-17. At the half time, W. M. was trailing by one point, but came out on top in the third and fourth quarters. The Varsity team left for New York, February 29, where they lost the hardest fought game of the season to New York University, 21-17. To rexenge the defeat handed W. M. last year by Panzer, the team, led by Captain Horn, went on a scoring spree and defeated Panzer, 43-17. On their last day in New York, the Tri-colors were sent home on the short end of a 25-18 score, by Manhattanville. The Varsity was the starting line-up in the Charlesto n game, but were soon replaced by the Reserves, who were able to defeat the North Carolina team by the rather large score of 43-23. The entire route from the rail- way station to the foot of Duke of Gloucester Street at the old Capitol building was lined with American flags and garlands of flowers. October twentieth broke crisp but clear, and when the Chief Executive ' s train arrived shoi ' th after ten o ' clock, a twent -one gun salute was fired to welcome him to the place where much of America ' s history was made. As the train stopped. President Br an and Govi.-rnor Peery boarded it, while Postmaster P ' arle) ' stepped off to greet the throng of anxious spectators. About ten minutes passed before President Roosevelt finally appeared. A military band struck up Hail to the Chief. The President, smiling broadly, raised his hat and the crowd cheered. After being escorted to a waiting automobile, the presidential party commenced its triumjihant march to the College. Along the sides of the road leading to the main street stood a corps of students from William and .Mary, attired in white trousers and blue coats, forming with the great staves the) carried, a sort of human bidwark. A huge .American flag and an equally large Vir- gi nia state flag served as portals giving en- trance tci tlu- Duke nf Gluucester Street. As the procession advanced, the oung men opened ranks, arraved themselves on either side of the street and presented their staves as soldiers present arms. The official cai ' moved slowly. When final- ly the college was reached thousands of specta- tors hurst into cheers and hands blared forth with martial music, which could scarcely be heard above the din. The crowds were heril- ed to and fro b ' State Police and the Rich- mond Blues, but finall - managed to group themselves around the rear of the historic Wren Building to hear the message of Presi- dent Roosevelt. Special visitors were seated within the white picket fence which marks the original boundary of the College. Such guests as Mrs. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Mrs. Woodrow Wilson, Admiral and Mrs. Cary Grayson, Governor and Mrs. George Campbell Peery and many other notable personages, far too numerous to mention, were among the interested spectators. From earh ' morning till long after the President and his retiiiue had left, Williams- burg was abuzz with activit) ' ; military bands, flags, armed guards, and thousands of hustling excited visitors helped to restore to the Co- lonial Capitol some of the activity which had marked it in earlier days. ' hen the ceremonies drew to an end the crowds gradually dwindled away and life in Williamsburg resumed its usual eas) ' tenor. There was, however, a feeling deep in the minds of the residents that the glory of their cit)- was not a thing of the past, but rather a link among the ages to knit the generations each with each.
