THE RUSTIC ELEGANCE OF THE LUXURY LODGE contrasted sharply with the impover- ished Canadian Indian village in which it was situated. The large window gave the guests a panoramic view of the virgin timber and the mighty river. Directly under the glass which separated the rich Americans from the wil- derness sat a middle-aged Indian guide. He had guided for the lodge for nearly twenty years. He had seen the guests come and go. He had witnessed the level of the water rise and fall. He knew the country. As he sat comfortably on a rock near the shore, his inner thoughts became vocal. The young girl who was sun bathing, unseen to the Indian, overheard his words. These Americans, they come and go every year. It seems like they never change. It's al- most as if the same ones come back every year. They say the same things over and over. Like, 'Ah, smell that air. The view is fantastic. iff--I., . 'W- Look at those trees. This is the life. lsn't it beautiful! It is so uncivilized. It does a person good to get away. I wonder what they are get- ting away from? They chop down these trees and build themselves mansions, and they th row their beer cans into the river. There is something in this nature that over- whelms them. They don't understand. I guess when you've grown up with the trees you un- derstand quicker. lt's not the trees you wonder at, it's man. Will they ever realize that each individual life is far more awesome 'than all those trees put together! But they soon go back to their offices and jobs where they en- counter people everyday. They will tell of the beauty of the wilderness to all they meet, blind to the beauty in front of them. And me, well there is really no place for me to go. I guess I most likely will die here.
