Summertimeg three months of relax- ation. While the days stretch ahead in May with plans of biking, swim- ming and sailing, September is sud- denly here and preparations are made for another nine months of learning. One might regret the end of those days of leisure, but the an- ticipation of renewing old friend- ships and making new ones creates a glow to which no amount of sun- shine can equal. Molly Hauser, a senior majoring in government research analysis, was the New Student Orientation Direc- tor for 1978-1979. Her duties con- sisted of coordinating and imple- menting the orientation program. Through her efficient organization and involvement, Molly helped to make about 700 new students feel at home here at St. Catherine's. Beginning the school year can some- times be a traumatic experience, es- pecially for freshmen. Many stu- dents might want to escape, and some did this fall - to the Renais- sance period. As part of a program to become familiar with the Twin Cities, CSC students ventured to Shakopee for old world games and foods. The dancing and dueling, the vendors and actors, all effectively recreated the atmosphere of Re- naissance era. Whitby was struck by lightening while students were struck by sur- prise when the hall was hit at ap- proximately 6 a.m. Sept. 5. Thunder jarred awake every heavy sleeper from one end of campus to the oth- ers, plus knocked out phones and a few stereos and radios. Damages to the roof was estimated at S3,000. The storm brought problems, but also excitement to the new year. Could hypnotism benefit the usual cramming for mid-terms and finals? You might have gotten the answer from hypnotist Ken Weber, who ap- peared at O'Shaughnessy audito- rium on Sept. 28. Oh well. Better luck next year! Ori- ginally from Kenya, Africa, June at- tended Macalester COIIGQS and com- pleted her graduate work at the Uni- versity of Minnesota. In her new post, June uses her cultural back- ground to assist and counsel the 90 foreign and minority students at St. Catherines. Leadership is a quality which anyone at St. Catherine's can aquire. ln or- der to illustrate and teach effective leadership skills, the student govern- ing board offered a leadership work- shop Sept. 17. Two succeeding ses- sion involved parliamentary proce- dures, becoming an effective com- municator, the anatomy and physi- ology of CSC and leadership tech- niques. Finally, these skills were combined to begin group planning for goals and concerns for the stu- dent governing board in relation to the CSC community. Something new and blue was add- ed to St. Catherine's campus this year. The Men in Blue were estab- lished at CSC on August 15. The new security department operates on a 24-hour basis and works with local police agencies. Bill Hewitt, pictured above, is one of 16 men who patrol the campus grounds. WCCO-TV's Dave Moore was on hand at a Foley theatre, St. Thomas, Sept. 27 to discuss his newscasting career. Communication and theatre students gathered to gain an insight on the exciting world of broadcast- ing. The event was sponsored by the joint CSC-CST Communication and Theatre department.
