Burning brightly, the flame of learning which St. Benedict lit in the far sixth century, became the heritage of all European peoples. From north to south and .from east to West, its light converted the fierce barbarian tribes and ultimately civilized all of Europe. Furthermore, its flame, carried to America by the zealous Archabbot Boniface Wimmer in the 19th century, guides the lives of thousands in that country as well. In our pageant, SO LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE, given annually at St. Benedict's as a formal induction of freshmen into collegiate life, the freshmenbreceive the same light from fourteen Benedictine Saints. This presentation of torches is symbolic of their obligation to carry on the work begun by St. Benedict. Pledging loyalty to their glorious heritage as fresh' men, they learn to love and nurture it through four years, in order to let it shine the better for all the world after they are graduated. ' Saints pass the lighted torches, symbols of Christian learning, to the freshmen. page fifty-three
