St. Benedict's Medal- Significance of the Letters The four letters at the side, C. S. P. B., signify Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti CCross of the Holy Father Benedictj. The five on the length, C. S. S. M. L., Crus Santa, sit mihi lux CHoly Cross, be my lightj. The five on the breadth, N. D. S. M. D., Non demon sit mihi dux CLet not the devil prevail against mej. The fourteen around the Medal, V. R. S. N. S. M. V. S. M. Q. L. I. V. B., Vade Retro Santana, numquam suade mihi, vana sunt mala quae libas, ipse venum bibas CCet Thee behind me Satan, tempt me not to vanity, thou hast chosen it, and drunk down its deadly poisonj. The Cross signifies the sign of our salvation with which St. Benedict operated, by divine inspirf ation, great wonders during the' sixtyfthree years he lived on earth. Cn the right side of the medal Con the cover of this bookj is the inscription Crux S. Patris Benedicti CThe Cross of the Holy Father'BenedictJ. Around the edge of this same side of the Medal are the words, Ejus in Obitu Nostro Praesentia Muniamur CMay His Presence protect us in the hour of our deathj. Below the figure of St. Benedict is given the place and date of first coinage: Ex S. M. Casino MDCCCLXXX CArchf abbey of Monte Cassio, 18805.
