P9 l l page four Prologue This is the light that St. Benedict gave. This is the light of Christian culture and learning which, up' held by the Hrm, strong hands of youth, has flamed through fourteen centuries. This is the light which has brought joy to our hearts through four years here at St. Benedict's. It is our wish that the Facula, our little torch, will record the reflection of that flame as it has enlightf ened our administration, our organizations, our activities and the members of our classes. May it continue to shine in the lives of everyone who has come under its holy influence. Presentation of the torch of learning CScenef1om the pageantD page five page six Dedication We, the students of St. Benedict's, dedicate this issue of the Facula to all Benedictines, but especially to Sister Richarda, who, as Dean of Residence over a per' iod of four years, gave us many things that will enrich our lives permanently. Generously Sister gave of her time, her efforts, and herself to enrich us with a discernment of and an apf preciation for real and lasting values. Her personal concern for each one of us individually, and her sincere interest in our smallest undertakings, We shall never forget. Her friendship is one we shall always regard with respect, loyalty, and gratitude. SISTER RICHARDA, O. S. B. Guided by the FACULTY, Fourteen centuries ago, St.ABenedict, finding Europe uncivilized and overrun by barbarian hordes, lit a great fire from the double light of prayer and work. By means of this fire, symbolic of Christian culture and learning, his followers achieved their work. The rapid spread of its light is ref presentative of the successful effort of Benedictines in the civilization of barbarians into scholars, peasants, and princes. Today St. Benedict's followers still employ the double light of prayer and work to educate us, their students. Imbued with his ideals, they teach us that the work of our hands is noble, that scholarship is worthy of our pursuit, that prayer must have an important place in our lives, and that the ideal of the family bond, which makes all men brothers in Christ, is sacred but has meaning only when we practice it in our everyday living. In all our URGA I A'l'l0 page eighteen Rising from the fire of prayer and Work, the flames of light and love leap higher and higher, driving back the darkness. In the pageant, the civilizing of the barbarians is symbolized by the struggle between the graceful flame dancers and the Wild barbarian hordes. Subdued, the barbarians are led to the fire and accept the light of truth and learning. Barbarian hordes are still with us in evil and in sin. Unitf ting in organized groups such as the Sodality, the Student Council, and others, we strengthen the light within us and def fend it against attacks from the outside world. These orf ganizations also give us the opportunity to clarify our ideals, to' develop our creative interests, and to supplement our scholastic pursuits, that in all things God may be glorified. From the beginning, ACTWITIE page thirty-six Converted by the light St. Benedict brought, the barf barians became industrious peasants who tilled the soil and reaped the golden grain with a song on their lips, peasants who thanked God for the harvest, peasants who loved the toil of their hands. There were also scholars who patiently copied the wisdom of the past on parchment scrolls and princes who loved their people and who ruled them with the justice of a just law. Here and now, in our academic activities, we exercise the patience, faithfulness and thoroughness of the ancient scholars. ln our leisure time and recreational pursuits, We practice the peasants' cheerfulness and joy. And, in our converse with others, we strive to cultivate the charity and justice of 'the princes. In this way our intellectual, social, and spiritual activities all contribute to our development under the light of St. Benedict. We introduce our CLASSES Burning brightly, the flame of learning which St. Benedict lit in the far sixth century, became the heritage of all European peoples. From north to south and .from east to West, its light converted the fierce barbarian tribes and ultimately civilized all of Europe. Furthermore, its flame, carried to America by the zealous Archabbot Boniface Wimmer in the 19th century, guides the lives of thousands in that country as well. In our pageant, SO LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE, given annually at St. Benedict's as a formal induction of freshmen into collegiate life, the freshmenbreceive the same light from fourteen Benedictine Saints. This presentation of torches is symbolic of their obligation to carry on the work begun by St. Benedict. Pledging loyalty to their glorious heritage as fresh' men, they learn to love and nurture it through four years, in order to let it shine the better for all the world after they are graduated. ' Saints pass the lighted torches, symbols of Christian learning, to the freshmen. page fifty-three beginning with the inn hlnnn, Playing Royal Rummy, Madonna McGowan, Margaret Simon, Mary jane Theisen, and Rita Strauss have five kibitzers: Mary Utsinger, Elayne Wagner, Joyce Wild, Dorothy Weiss, and Patricia Sullivan--all members of one dormitory. Though every class has distinctive features, it took us a long time to discover typical traits in our 194647 freshmen. However, when they gave an allfcollege carnival with gala side shows, clever entertainment, and tasty refreshments, we were convinced of their ability to organize and cooperate. They have shown since that they are funfloving, for they delight in midnitebridge games., dorm escapades, and pranks after lights. On the other handfthey also display studious attitudes and a deep interest in things spiritual. page fifty-four i V A song fest is the inevitable result when these singers get together: Eleanor Buchl, Rosella Weir, Jeanne O'Neill Cclass presidentj, Alice Thome, Joan Chione, joan Erickson, Donna Van Risseghem, Phyllis Foley, and Gladys Auer.
