l h e P a q e a n t Our fall pageant, embodying the spirit and growth of fourteen cen- turies of Benedictine culture . . . the motto of St. Benedict . . . ORA et LABORA is depicted by the two friezes. Barbarians in interpretative dancing show the uncivilized state of Europe before Christianity . . . the lighting of the huge bonhre by St. Benedict symbolizes the intro- duction of Christianity to barbaric races , . . the flames represent the spreading of the light of culture and through an interpretative dance drive oft the borborions. The fourteen representative saints are pre- sented torches by the flames . . . the barbarians come back as peas-- ants, scholars, and princes. After the folk dances of the Christianized peoples, the chimes ring out bringing all classes together for Com- pline. The most Rt. Rev. Joseph F. Busch, Bishop of St. Cloud presents to each freshman her academic cap and gown . . . the culminating point of the pageant is the presentation of the lighted torches by the saints to the new freshmen, symbolic of the passing on of the Benedictine heritage.
