jim Shields was the best friend our college ever had. While he was not an Idahoan by birth this family came from Colorado when jim was still a boyj, he has left his indelible mark on the business and educational communities of Southern Idaho. After attending the University of California at Berkeley he returned to the Magic Valley, to Buhl, where he founded a clover and alfalfa seed business. Persever- ance, business acumen and honest became the cornerstones of his enterprise, and his firm, SHIELDS WAREHOUSE, prospered. His son, james T. Shields, continues to operate the firm that came to be a monument to Iim's integrety and farsight. Education in Southern Idaho is indebted to jim Shields. Always interested in local schools, he helped build the foundation on which the COLLEGE of SOUTHERN IDAHO would be built. Latter he would serve on the Colleges first Board of Trustees from 1965 until his death in 1971, and he served well. As a tribute to his dedicated service the Shields Academic Building was named for him. So it is with humility and a certain amount of pride that this year's TALON is dedicated to the memory of a great man, james H. Shields.
