To some, insight means the kind of under- standing Which comes with maturity. To others, insight means a looking-in, as an in-sight into the lives of the administration, faculty, and stu- dents Who comprise the human side of COS. To still others, insight means breadth, the broadening of experience and its assimilation into one's eventual lite pattern. To the staff of the 1953 Koh-Kyo, the theme means all three. By the time We reach college the mold we began to cast in our earliest days is, to all intents and purposes, almost finished. There remains the final polishing which, in our two years here, comes in the form of expert guid- ance given by counsellors and faculty mem- bers as part of the close student-faculty rela- tionship so definitely a part of COS. Life goes by so quickly in college that we tend to forget what made up the days and weeks of the school year. Leafing through the Koh-Kyo in days to come, we will do more than view the past through memory's telescopeg we will see, in perspective, the kind of edu- cation which made our days at COS unique. Perhaps the greatest value of a college edu- cation is the kind of experience it gives us, the stimulating challenge, the chance for creative expression, the opportunity to make tangible progress toward our chosen goal. lust as the symbol of College of the Sequoias is the sequoia gigantea with its inspiring symmetry and majesty, so the symbol of a COS graduate is what we call the Sequoia-balanced mind. Various phases of insight are exemplified in the pages which follow: through the medium ot pictures we review the events of the school year, through the copy We try to put into words what COS and the lite we led here - social, academic, athletic - has meant to us, and through the designed unit of the brain We seek to present, in artistic fashion, the symbol of our theme - Insight! Various budgets were set up for the year soon after, various necessary committees were appointed, class elec- tions were supervised, and the decks were cleared for the hosting ot the Cen- tral California Iunior College Student Government Association fall conier- ence held in October. At the state conference held later that same month Art Lawson was elect- ed president of the state group, COS was selected as the host school for the spring conference and Asilornar was selected for the conference site. The biggest operation which the custodians undertook, in addition to their numerous daily duties, was the reseeding of the various lawns around campus. Buster Pigman was a familiar sight as he continued his one-man painting marathon to make the buildings look fresh at all times. Truly, to quote Fiscus again, the custodians of our college are the life-line of this expert care and they perform their duties with a de- votion that can not be equalled in any other form of college life. .,., g 23 r ,u - r, , .. 4 . . ,, ' ' '. . ..:, .1 -fl-34seQJ!L- 31-seed ,Q .- wrlgtfe 1sef.5s.5.s.-ot, ' ' nest.,-,-e,s,g,1-,gs Us .:ss.,..,::.g,su 33.3 simenfesr, ,i.,:i1...Q,Ai . s ' - -l l . af' , t :lf -lv. l Iohnny checks the oil before the se ,. l g w-,. up ,H ' ,rig 4- , ,v..,,f,v. . , Q... 5, A 'Ji ,j,',',t1- '. , .ry mr- if ' -- :ngfzl t 1 Q gt1,:f1-'fl sg w1EJC:i+,d:A.,i1.W .-3 .fn . ,lui tg--,. -- 'mviff ' A-mf: ,lpfikolffl -is W l.
