Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1970 volume:

I like to work with my hands, says ML Shef- field. He enjoys teaching students to express their creative'talents in art. For seven years Mr. Sheffield has developed these artisw tic skills in his students by encouraging use of imagi- nation and use of varied media. Some weird things are good, he ex- plains. Such enthusiasm has made studio art a popular course around CPS. Mr. Sheffield also finds time to advise the Mile- stone tHSomething that starts from nothing and comes out terrific! L His creative ideas and guid- ance have greatly en- hanced the quality of the Milestone in recent years; Thus, for giving 50 gen- erously of his time to encourage and develop our creative potentials, as well as to advise the Mile- stbne, we the Class 1970 dedicate the Milestone to Mr. Samuel S SheffieldJr. I aim the people - the mob e- the crowd - the mass. Do you know that all the great work 'of the world is done through me? , e Carl Sandburg's words are of great im- t port to us who 'live in a worldewhere the individual is often ignored. His thoughts serve as a reminder that in each of us is an individuai, a unique entity,'capable of improving and enhancing out environ- ' ment whether it be through science, art, entertainment, or any other medium.' Every accomplishment we make, no mat- ter how 5mall, has significance. , Therefore, the 1970 Milestone simply wishes to stress the almost forgotten im- portance ofthe individual. L II! .3. .33. Iirer... w .i. September 9, School opened with 56 addie tions to the CPS family, bringing our enroll- ment to a record 476 students. Amid the ini- tial confusion of the new modular system we noticed changes in our campus - land- scaping and a new playfield. Before we knew it the annual Silver Tea started the endless fund raising projects for the Milestone. Properly reSpectful fresh- men performed menial tasks for their omnipotent senior sisters until Freshman Skits marked the end of subservi- ence and lots of fun as well. Meanwhile new students chose their teams in the Blue - Gold Convocation, begin- ning a year of sports enthusiasm. - Soon Halloween parties brought fun and excitement to Lower School students. Class teams competed for the hockey cup; this year the junior Tigers won. In varsity games CPS and Summit clashed on Oct. 29, Summit winning 2-0. CPS challenged Hills- dale, but with no success; .Hillsdale won 4-0. The carnival was the annual fall attraction. Many booths offered . chanc'es to purchase in-. , teresting items, or to win prizes. The Spook House and the Dating Game Mare other big events at the, camival.lThis year's prOceeds will go to bqild- 1an stairs to the Gym balcony. After months of hard work the Middle School was ready to present a series of one-act plays. The presentation in- cluded Pink and Patches, 3 story of a girl's anxiety over a new dress. The Ugly Duckling was about a king who was ashamed to present his ugly daughter for mar- riage. Ralph Roister Doister 'was a 17th century play about a fool's courtship of a lady. CPS Thanksgiving services began the holidays. Our It's Academic team competed well and led until the Grab Bag round when we found out we didn't know who Ernie Banks was - we lost to Taylor by 35 points. Christmas Celebrations got under way with the Senior Fac- ulty Christmas party. This year's theme was The Grinch That Stole Christmas. The assorted elves, trolls, and the Grinch, of course, entertained the Faculty with music and Yuletide cheer. The Middle School sang the traditional Christmas Pageant, sending us on vacation full of Christmasspiritt CHRISTMAS PAGEANT CAST Mary ................... Amy Jo Fisher Joseph .................. The new faculty initiates were Mrs. Morrow, who teaches the Middle School and Mr. Sheffield, who teaches art The new student members: janet Byron, Beth Kuhn, and Anni Macht, join Sharon Worthing. New juniors' were Kim Helmholz, Libby Lazarus, and Sharon Twachtman. 17 Even though it was Fri- day the 13th the Dramatic Club came through with a successful production of The Hobbit After hours of tiring rehearsals and work, the CPS thespians recreated Tolkien's en- chanting fantasy about Middle Earth Hobbits and dwarfs fighting the evil forces of their land. One year of hard work culmi- nated in the Junior-Senior Prom 0n April11. It was truly The Midsummer's Night's Dream with the psychedelic light show reflecting off the sil- ver foil lined walls. Thank you, Juniors! On April 22 we turned our minds to more serious matters - Earth Day. Students walked and bicycled to school, dem- onstrating their concern for our endangered environment. Discussion groups explored ways we each can help save our environment. Timets Up was the theme of the annual HAC show. Father Time and his 12 months of the year presented a se- ries of skits about subjects like Never break an aardvark's heart and the true story of Rudolph the Red Nosed Rein- deer. The HAC's concluded their show by tapping their new members. On May 13, the Lower School celebrat- ed its May Fete. A week later, the Up- per School had Olympic Day.
