7 ANNUAL CINCINNATI COLLEGE P 373.3 QCS? LWE8 C DWE HL93 H9 UL E ER l968 milestone the college preparatory school Cincinnati, ohio mi Inmfli A good line of communication is essential to progress. It is the foundation of friendship, ad- vancement, and understanding. But today the art of communication is too often neglected. Miss Pruden, in her high school English classes, has given her students the ability to express them- selves in their own language, to break through the walls created through misconceptions. She influences us with smiles, gentle advice, and in- teresting classes enhanced with charades of Ward Wmlllt, words and satires of the Bard. And so we dedicate the l968 MlYestam'to Miss Pruden. MMM Under his leadership. in ten short years we have added better learning facili- ties, introduced a more diverse and advanced curriculum, expanded the range of school activities. and instilled a new vigor in The College Preparatory School. For his untiring devotion to The College Preparatory School, his pro- gressive ideas, and his patience in deal- ing with half a thousand never-satisfied students, we acknowledge our head- master. 37 43 TI 9I I35 I43 a year of progress ................ 6 administration .................. 37 classes ........................ 43 activities ....................... 7I seniors ........................ 9l progress in todayb world ........ I43 a year of progress Moments pass, and smiles broaden months pass, and flowers blossom; years pass. and the world goes forward, glorified in progress But this is the chronicle of one year, and the progress of one school from a September of gold leaves to a June of ivy chains. Girls grow. become mature. Buildings rise; the school also goes forward. But in a world of progress, there are some things which do not change, especially the spirit of our school. Our love for the ever-ad- vancing school is symbolized by the dignified trees, stalwart. true, and ever-watchful, shad- ing new buildings. and new girls. 50 let us watch. observe, and experience the progress of this year. i , w. e4 um..u Thursday, September 7. was the scene of much gaiety and subdued joy at returning to school one year older and a summer wiser. Girls still fresh with vacation tans grinned, laughed. and greeted old friends and new. The halls, so recently quiet. were soon jammed with students, and at 8:45. the school year officially began. It is traditional each fall for the seniors to initiate the new freshmen into high school, as part of the culmination of their progression to the sacred halls of high school. This year freshman trials, as the seniors fondly call them, began with a picnic in Alms Park with a few minor. humiliating tasks. It was not uncommon to see a pig-tailed girl stumble down to Keys Crescent load- ed with her big sister's heaviest books. Groans abounded with the assignment of ridiculous essays. horoscopes, or over- whelming quanitites of cookies for the avaricious big sister. The last trial was that of appearing in cos- tume the day of the freshman skits in convocation. As decreed by their big sis- ters, they appeared as cigarette packages or pencils or folksingers. A final. solemn slumber party complete with rituals, and the innocents of the ninth grade were welcomed into the worldly high schoolt The fall hockey season, with all its bruises. flying sticks, and crazy pucks, brought victory to the se- nior class and the blue team. Senior captain, Holly Drew, and blue team captain, Terry Harrison, were hailed by their supporters and congratulated by their worthy opponents. In the traditional hockey games with Summit and Hillsdale, the CPS team, having made much prog- ress in the past year, slaughtered Summit l-O. but put up a valiant hght with Hillsdale, losing only 4- 2, a prophetic score repeated as the schools' junior varsity teams clashed. The margin narrowed to two points this year. But who knows what progress next year's team will make! Ln ! 5 Tl. Smwtlm '6 It UlOlK BUY CALIIDIR v mum $1? 5 4 . uu W4 At 2:20, October l2th, the subdued roar of ex- citement erupted into a full-fledged carnival. It had all the necessary ingredients: a raffle, a white elephant booth, a fortune teller, a spook house, and a wheel of fortune. And there was more: a gourmet booth, featuring unusual and famous foods, a garden booth, an arts and crafts boutique, an old book booth, a makeup booth, and to end the night with a bang; the dating game. The carnival was successful in its aim: to raise money for the stage lighting in the new gym- theater building. The most lucrative and popu- lar projects were the raffel. aided by the expert ticket-sellers in the sixth grade, and the dating game, a new brainstorm ofthe senior class. The gay spirits which permeate the air of every carnival, the popcorn, the candy. the plastic spiders, the smell of hamburgers cooking somewhere, and this unscholarly atmosphere help bring the school closer together. to bind all who are there with the unrelenting web of love. in the course of years, girls will leave and live other lives. but they will never forget CPS. On October 28th, the annual Silver Tea served to introduce formally members of the Class of l968 to family and friends. After the short in- troductions. members of the Glee Club enter- tained the guests with numerousvocal selec- tions, concluding with the traditional allay 1116 Good ,Card Bless mid km! you. The hostesses e the seniors of 1968 r then hospitably served tea and pastries to their guests, who throughly enjoyed the afternoon. The tea was doubly successful: not only was Tllc' Miltsfmt's treasury substantially augment- ed. but each girl introduced became more aware of the responsibility which her position of respect as a senior entailed. Each girl recog nized that her final year at CPS represented a major step forward on the sometimes arduous road of progress. November ISth, the middle school pre- sented File ZTIIirrmI Clarks, a play developed creatively, with no formal script, from a James Thurber story, with the help of Mrs. Jack Reynolds CPS creative dramatics teacher. The cruel Duke, so cold he froze his precious clocks. was vanquished by the handsome Prince-in-disguise and his elf- ing friend, the Golux. and the Prince and Princess rode off together into the sunset, after warming the clocks into working condition. The various guests included such imaginary characters as gnomes and nymphs, ghouls and ghosts, witches and warlocks. Upper school students, feeling a bit nostalgic. thought back upon their days of make- believe. Being surrounded by so many characters from the world of fantasy, they found it somewhat difficult to concentrate on reality School was dismissed fortheThanksgiving holidays, with a special service, performed by The Reverend Thomas H. Conely, minister of the First Baptist Church ofNewport, Kentucky. Mr. Conley was assisted by Mr. Beach. the Glee Club, and the three seniors who attended the Lake Forest Religious Conference with Mrs. Shafer last summer - Margo Lunken. Susan Heilbrun. and Cici Twachtman. Progress is a club with something to say. The Debate Club founded last year, was busy pre- paring its second upper school convocation. Resolve that conformity is the mainstay of 'society. Was the issue. and both teams were involved in research. When the actual convo- cation took place and vote was taken in true Oxford method, the negative team, consisting of Van Vornheder, Cici Twachtman. and Ann Salinger, came out ahead; both seniors and faculty. however, disagreed with the rest of the upper school and voted for the amrmative team; Gigi Crowe, Laurie Crutchfield, and Lau- ri Love. With winter came Vol1eyball season, as physi- cal education ciasses moved in from the frost- bitten hockey field. BluetGold. class, and inter- mural competition also began. In class campe- tition. the Junior Flower Power, led by co-cap- tains Pam Fisher and Val Vornheder. emerged victorious. Second place went to the Senior Bears. Terry Harrison's Blue team won the volleyball competition in three exciting games with the Gold team. Since the Blues had already won the hockey cup. they received the I968 Blue- Gold cup. The games against Hillsdale were still an obstacle for C.P.S. Varsity and Junior Var- sity teams, whichlost onceagain. Here was one area where progress still re- mained to be made, There was also an entertaining game played between the student council and the faculty. Although the representatives of the student body fought hard. they were finally crushed by the athletic ad- ministration. Finally, it was the last week of school be- fore Christmas vacation, a week of festivi- ties. The lower school was rocked with parties, and the fourth graders especially had fun at an international party with many different nations represented in costume. The upper school also had par- ties. at little more subdued but nonetheless, spirited, and the senior class donated a Santa Claus to distribute gifts to the younger children. Everyone smiled. laughed, wished MerryChristmas. and hoped for snow. The highlight of Christmas celebrations. was the Pageant. Before this musical in- terpretation of the first Christmas story was presented by the seventh grade, the glee club sang with an eighth grade cho- rus. The actual Pageant had another cho- rus of sixth grade angels. Christmas is a time of goodwill. of joy, of quiet contemplation, a rare time when a concern for the rest of the world runs rampant. a very spe- cial time. With the end of Christmas vacation came January, and students returned to the routine of school and classes to prepare for mid-year examinations. After a hectic flurry of shrieks, leaky pens. and crammed notes, this ordeal was over. Soon after exams, the Junior Class completed preparations for the Junior-Senior Prom on April 6th. The ballroom ofthe Queen City Club was transformed into the Champs-Elyshes with banks of flowers and even a sidewalk cafti. l9 Girls in all manner of maxihs and long dresses swirled through the night with escorts in quite varied modes of attire. Of the Me ieunes filles eligible to be Prom Queen 7 Debbie Fisher, Terry Harrison, Sherry Strasser. Cici Twachtman. and Robbie Wood 7 Mademoiselle Fisher was crowned at the stroke of mid-night and danced graciously to the music ofthe New Lime throughout the duration of her reign. A spring mood pervaded the dance in defiance of freezing weather outdoors. and for many starry-eyed Seniors, it was truly a night of dreams. Nine excited girls, giggling and strewing flower petals, flew to Washington, DC. on Thursday, February 29, for the four day Senior Honor trip. In the short weekend that followed the students and Mrs. Lie- bich toured the capitol, several govern- ment agencies, outlying homes of interest, the Library of Congress. and the Purple Tree. Three student members were chosen for academic exeeilence. seniors. Susie Heilbrun and Mag McLaurin, and junior, Susie Feibel- man. The two new faculty members honored were Mademoiselle Arlette Delory and Mrs. Jean O'Leary. The two new honora ry members were the Reverend Hugh Bean Evans and Mr. John S. Stark. The initaires lit candles from the lamp of learning and received their pins in the ceremony. They were again honored at a May 9 dinner where they received their certificates. Mr. Robert Portune of the University of Cin- cinnati delivered the Cum Laude address. 21 The cast of Nita mum Wailikg carefully watched the days until April 25th and 26th. Opening night arrived, and the tornado of ac- tivity backstage during the performance of the Glee Club created some doubt as to whether the play would ever get started. At eight o'- clock, the murder mystery began. It was set in the Savoy Alps. at the de Valmy chateau. where mysterious near-fatal accidents kept happening to the nine-year-old Compte de Valmy, Philippe. His pretty English governess. Linda Martin. protected him from the charac- ters she suspected: his crippled Uncle Leon: his elegant Aunt Heloise; his dashing cousin, Raoul; and the strange manservant, Bernard. Her only friends seemed to be the neighboring English caretaker and the maid. The perform- ance kept everyone on the edge of his seat. The play was one more successful venture of its director. Physical Edu- cation department on May l5. On the lower playfleld the lower school held tumbling and dancing exhibitions for the parents, and the middle school demonstrated the techniques of the newest sport taught at C.P.S., Lacrosse. Awards were given to those who participated in after-school athletics, winning teams and spring tournament winners. The Senior soft- ball team again won the cup. The Blue Team won the Blue-Gold competitions. The high point of May Fete came with the Honor- ary Athletic Club Show after dinner. The theme was a class reunion praising the indispensable girl.
