HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL 1n the fall of 1906 Miss Mary Harlan Doherty, who had recently graduated from Cornell University, opened her new private school for girls. She was fortunate in finding :1 conveniently located house that would serve her needs very well. Her aim was to establish a school which would give girls a wefl-rounded and varied course of study which would prepare them for college. In addition to the academic courses, there were several cultural coursesesuch as drawing and voice culture. Thus with sixteen members of the faculty, a handsome building and one hundred thirteen pupils the new school was established. The school building itself already had an interesting history when Miss Doherty leased it The house had been built shortly before the Civil War by George Hoadly, who later became Governor of Ohio. The house was a Showplace. Lovely magnolia trees were planted on the land surrounding the house. In the hall there were tiles brought from Spain; in a number of the rooms there were hand carved mantelst It was indeed a home with charm and atmosphere. Dr. Arthur Johnstone bought the house in 1896. He used it for his private residence and for a hospital. After Dr. Johnstone died in 1906, Miss Doherty leased the home from his widow. Under the conditions of the lease, Miss Doherty was given the privilege of purchasing the house. By 1916 she owned the home. Since the school began, many changes have been made to the building. The vesti- bule replaced the original front porch. The Ftrst gymnasium was a frame building connected by 0 passage to the school. The wing containing the present gymnasium and several other classrooms was added in 1912. The study hall with the room above it was built in 1921; and the Iunchroom was added in 1928. Miss Doherty retired as headmistress in 1938; she continued to teach for another yeart She continued to take an active interest in the school until her death in 1948. 'When Miss Doherty retired as headmistress, she turned over the direction of the school to Miss Ruth Russell Jones, Miss Ange Faran, Miss Pearl Cotteral, and Miss Fannie Resot Stewart, who has since died. Miss Cotteral has retired as a teacher, but she still serves on the Board of Trustees. Miss Jones is the headmistress, and Miss Faran is the business manager. In 1939 the College Preparatory School for girls was incorporated not for profit, and today it is governed by a Board of Trustees. Each year the girls who graduate take with them memories of many traditional events which add so much to their life at schoolt In the tall there is the Silver Tea at which the members of the senior class are presented to tlie mothers and friends of the school. In the spring the Honorary Athletic Club presents a variety show. After the show, the HAC's top the girls who have been chosen to become members. The May Fete is another special event which adds to the tradition. Each new Annual adds a chapter to the history of the school. The yearbooks have told of many changes to the school. There is one thing, however, which remains unchanged, and that is the girls. The girls who graduate in 1956 have the same hopes and ideals as those who graduated in 1906. They know that the education they have received will help them take their place in the world as responsible and mature citizens Page Seven
