Her great patience, her marvelous guidance, and her Flne sense of humor mean? 0 great deal to us in our early years, and, of course, proved cm invaluable background for our later years, at C.P.S; We Therefore wish to dedicate the Milestone of 1953 fo Miss Shirley Kemper Page Three : rRlER-mssiil Ionts 31.me stats M L m: r 7 Ai. We Were originally inspired by their great musical comedy, An American in Paris't, but by using many of their songs from the Broadway shows, Of Thee I Sing , Funny Face , and others, we were able to inciude-parts of many of the light, humorous ideas for which they were famous. The Milestone is the last cooperative proiect of the Senior Class as part of the student body, and therefore it is natural to want to make it as great a smash hit as life for us has been at C.P.S. All of the quotations used in this book are taken from Gershwin songs unless otherwise indicated. One day at Paris's famous Cross Walk Cate , the Maitre d'Hotel had a very worried expression on his face; indeed he seemed almost hysterical. He kept muttering, Paris will never be the same again, and most especially my poor Cafe! As he hurried about, his patrons heard him muttering something about sixteen women who had taken Paris by storm. The truth was that, after many years of being out of contact with each other, the Class of Fifty-Three had decided to get together again at the famous uCross Walk Cafe , and renew old acquaintances. The First to arrive at the Cafe was Sheila Coxworth, who was tasdnating the patrons by singing songs of her native America in a low, sultry voice. Little did they know that she was singing, 'iYou'II Never Get Away! As Sheila was singing, in walked Ann Goyert, the famous fashion designer, in a mink coat, Bermuda shorts, net stockings, and silver slippers. Then a rather subversive looking woman was seen to sneak in by the side entrance. She crept stealthily up towards Ann. As Ann was about to say something, she said, Shhh! Don't say anything yet. They're looking for me! This turned out to be Phyt Edwards, who was being followed by several gendarmes, as she had been trying to cash in on Confederate bills throughout Paris. They took a table and the three of them, Sheila had since Finished singing, sat dOWn to wait for their friends. Soon to arrive after that were Patsy Fisher and Liz Woodward. Their careers, though vastly diFFerent, were equally remarkable. Patsy had married a famous Jazz Band leader, and was the mother of twelve children. Even in Paris things are cheaper by the dozen. Liz had won an international prize for accompanying the world's fastest pilot an a trip around the world e without a plane! Ann Zimmerman came in afterwards, and the crowd recognized her immediately, for she was none other than the famous television entertainer on HChanel No. 5 , who did such exceltent impersonations of Jackie Gleason in French, When Sally Sampson joined the group at the table, theiMaitre d'Hotel's face became as white as his tablecloths. t'What, he moaned, are they going to do that a nurse should be necessary? Following Sally, were Pam Berry, who came in yodeling, and Mallie Russel, who looked very businesslike. Pam had made a very profitable career for herself as a French hillbilly singer, while Mallie had been an assistant to the City Maintenance people, with special interest centered around, or rather over, fire hydrants. Then two very studious women appeared on the scene. They were Jane Altshaol and Betty Resor, who had both made a life of intensive study their careers. Jane was very quiet, trying to be an example of the theory she had stated in her iatest book, THE VALUE OF SILENCE . They asked Betty what she had been doing, and she told them that she had been doing an exhausting study on France's great historical tor hystericalt men. This was not clearly heard, because at that moment Charmie Woodward rushed in in a white coat, waving a hypodermic needle about in the air. This was the briefest reign of terror that Paris has ever known, for she was quickly subdued by her friends. Charmie, it seems, was a laboratory technician at one of Paris's largest hospitals, and the strain at this specialized work was beginning to have its eftect. Then two others came in in uniform. One was Clover Brodhead, who had been an airline hostess with T.W.A. for some years. Her motto was, that Travel certainly broadens the mind! The other uniform was a little unusuai, but it was soon discovered that the Page Sixtyvsix wearer of this uniform was Margie Foshay, the only woman admiral in the entire French Navy. Another subversive woman came in soon afterwards, and began looking into all of the closets and cupboards, much to our host's further distress. When she found that there was nothing that would interest her in his closets, she came and ioined the already large group at the table. This was Kay Wellingtord, the famous Woman archaeologist who had spent her life looking for skeletons in strange closets. Suddenly there was a great commotion, and a crowd of gendarmes rushed in. General pandemonium reigned in the Cafe, as Phyl, thinking they were after her, proceeded to try to escape by rushing under, and upsetting, all the tables nearest her. The gendarmes told the group that they must 90 immediately to the Arch of Triumph As they all rushed out of the Cafe, they saw Sandy Stolle astride a horse on the top of the Arch. After much coaxing and cujoling, they Finally persuaded her to come down, and then the sixteen started back to the Cafe. However, as they reached what remained of the Cafe, the Maitre d'Hotel said, in desperation, Dere's a Boat Dat's Leuvin' Soon for New York .at At the sound of an American name, they all suddenly decided to go home; and, as they paraded arm-in-arm towards the gares, singing, Show Me the Way to Go Home at the top of their voices, the Maftre d'Hotel and the entire Gendarmerie of Paris heaved a sigh of relief. ta song by George and Ira Gershwin trom Porgy and Bess .
