ADMINISTRATIO lt is perspective that colors all that we see and pretty much of what we do. Perspective influences action. Members of the freshman class are always reminded of the fact that they are not preparing for life, but rather that they are in life. By the time they get out into actual practice they will have spent twenty-eight years in prep- aration. lf this is looked upon as just a means to another end, and not an end in itself, it can be a futile bit of drudgery. On the other hand, it can be looked upon as a very vital part of life, where the learning process becomes an exciting adventure into a myriad of mysteries which surround a doctor on every hand. His perspective is tha.t of an adventurer and an explorer, and not of a slave in a salt mine. Much of medical curriculum revision is based upon chang- ing perspectives which are the outgrowth of a change of educational psychology. There was a time when the stu- dent mastered great blocks of information. This was a memory experience, gathering data in great reservoirs to be used at the right time, in the right place in the distant future. Now, it is known that seventy or eighty percent of everything that is learned is forgotten. With the advance of modern science, most of what is learned today will not be true ten years from today. The curric- ulum today endeavors to assist the student in mastering scientific methods, developing professional attitudes, and evolving ethical and moral values that will guide him throughout his professional career. One never completes his training as a physician. At the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education's meeting, one of the speakers said it would be highly desirable to print diplomas on material that would evaporate five years after commencement. A man is never educated. He is always in the process of becoming educated. This is doubly true of a physician. When he stops reading, stops attending seminars and clinics, stops going to conferences, he is professionally dead. There may be a time when such a doctor will be looked upon as a danger to society. This college has, not only a great past and great tradi- tions, but also, it has a greater and more elaborate future. There is no school of medicine in the country that has the moral or legal obligation to explore, develop and apply the principals of manipulative techniques to the problems of health, as does California College of Medicine, The graduates school have been successful because of their patient relationships. They kept foremost patients are people who have a disease studying a disease as an end. lt is future graduates will never lose imperative that this phase of the ln this scientifically evolving tests, automatic machines, digital drums, it is going to be man human. lt will be the rest will acquire men, or men question ls, will the new devices or will the doctor humqnize ? The patients know because feel because they are human and and those that follow will find a and satisfaction in the service of W. Ballentine Henley President
