Cayler, M.D. H Donald Donisthorpe, M.D. ADMINISTRATIO lt is perspective that colors all that we see and pretty much of what we do. Perspective influences action. Members of the freshman class are always reminded of the fact that they are not preparing for life, but rather that they are in life. By the time they get out into actual practice they will have spent twenty-eight years in prep- aration. lf this is looked upon as just a means to another end, and not an end in itself, it can be a futile bit of drudgery. On the other hand, it can be looked upon as a very vital part of life, where the learning process becomes an exciting adventure into a myriad of mysteries which surround a doctor on every hand. His perspective is tha.t of an adventurer and an explorer, and not of a slave in a salt mine. Much of medical curriculum revision is based upon chang- ing perspectives which are the outgrowth of a change of educational psychology. There was a time when the stu- dent mastered great blocks of information. This was a memory experience, gathering data in great reservoirs to be used at the right time, in the right place in the distant future. Now, it is known that seventy or eighty percent of everything that is learned is forgotten. With the advance of modern science, most of what is learned today will not be true ten years from today. The curric- ulum today endeavors to assist the student in mastering scientific methods, developing professional attitudes, and evolving ethical and moral values that will guide him throughout his professional career. One never completes his training as a physician. At the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education's meeting, one of the speakers said it would be highly desirable to print diplomas on material that would evaporate five years after commencement. A man is never educated. He is always in the process of becoming educated. This is doubly true of a physician. When he stops reading, stops attending seminars and clinics, stops going to conferences, he is professionally dead. There may be a time when such a doctor will be looked upon as a danger to society. This college has, not only a great past and great tradi- tions, but also, it has a greater and more elaborate future. There is no school of medicine in the country that has the moral or legal obligation to explore, develop and apply the principals of manipulative techniques to the problems of health, as does California College of Medicine, The graduates school have been successful because of their patient relationships. They kept foremost patients are people who have a disease studying a disease as an end. lt is future graduates will never lose imperative that this phase of the ln this scientifically evolving tests, automatic machines, digital drums, it is going to be man human. lt will be the rest will acquire men, or men question ls, will the new devices or will the doctor humqnize ? Ballentine Henley President ln looking at the future vistas of medicine is so varied, the prospects so massive, defies a brief inspection of maior receive emphasis in a few brief tempted to review the impact of such as the fantastic challenge of banks and lung banks that will of spare parts for our future One could be on the moral problems of , the intricate decis- ions that as everyone comes to recognize cannot be defined simply as an received from a single cell. America admires its physicians, as well it might. lt also gives them many privileges in social stature, in respect, and, yes, even in financial rewards. Society, however, never gives such ,privileges without most serious respon- sibility. The responsibility that America demands of its physicians is excellence and quality, above everything else. The educated American public knows quality, recognizes it and demands it. lt is thus becoming apparent that the formality of graduation is only a bench mark in a physician's education, and that his medical school must be prepared to assist him, stimulate him and guide him in his continuing scientific growth. The medical profession of California, but also the rest of the Nation, has begun to work with licensing bodies, to devise ways in which quality and continuing education can be obtained and can be verified. The day is not far off when a physician's license will not be for a life time, but will be only for a limited period of time, to be con- tinued only under the circumstances of re-demonstrated proficiency, ability and quality. If the medical profession will unite so as to remain the symbol of quality in medical care, the public will applaud it and be pleased indeed to continue to give physicians the many privileges which they enjoy. These physicians must be united in their effort for self discipline in terms of quality medical care, demonstrated moral fiber and social responsibility all in the best interests of the patient. The public, however, cannot easily recognize these qual- ities in individual physicians, but instead the physicians must, by united and organized action set up and demon- strate standards for their own control, discipline and continuing education. lf they do this as a responsible profession in a united way the prospective of medicine nationwide is bright indeed. lf they become dis-united, move away from personal responsibility and abandon self discipline the medical profession as we know it will be gone forever. Warren Bostick, M.D. Dean The changes which the California College of Medicine exciting and stimulating. The future of the school holds promise of stronger teaching departments, finer physical facilities, for its students. While looking forward toward an expanding program, one the accomplishments of the past. The men and women who served as the colleges from which this school developed showed great designs for the purposes of their schools. The faculties who taught the classes were dedicated, devoted people. The graduates of the colleges respected, beloved members of their communities. The continued support of the educational program of the college by its alumnae enabled the administration to maintain high standards. This support was both financial, through the professional societies, and educational through participat on in the teaching program of the school. Because the school was strongly built and supported, it could become the fine, developing institution it is today. Grace B. Bell, M.D. Associate Dean 14 -+ During the past year the office of Student Affairs has concerned itself with three maior areas-those of student financial aid, academic and personal counseling, and intern and resident placement. Expanded loan and scholarship funds have allowed the College to be instrumental in arranging approximately two hundred thousand dollars in aid to our student body. Maior portions of this amount have been made available through the American Medical Association and the Federal Government programs. Other portions could not have been granted without the excellent cooperation of the umni Association and other interested organizations. of academic and personal counseling have been expanded and are increasingly active through close cooperation with the faculty. During year the counseling service will be increased so that the responsibilities by an increasing number of interested faculty members. of concern for the Student Affairs office, the intern and program has expanded and become more complex. The success of our endeavors in this due to the cooperation given us by the student body. office can exist only as long as it continues to maintain an for the student body. Graw, Jr. Paul Berman lst Vice-President I 2nd Vice-President The Honor Society has as its aims the promotion of scholarship and research, the encouragement of high standards of character, conduct and recognition of scho- lastic achievement. Election is limited to students whose scholastic qualifications place them in the upper twenty-five per cent of their class. The total number of student members elected from any class does not exceed one-sixth of the total number expected to graduate in that class. Not more than one-third of the elected group are selected in the Junior year, the remaining are elected during the Senior year or period of hospital training. The organization of the Honor Society has been patterned after that of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. It is hoped that the Honor Society will ultimately become a chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha. Lloyd T. lseri, M.D. Joan M. Duncan Douglas R. Gadowski Sect.-Treasurer J. P 'tl if in d n wiht gxfifv- e n t o e a it it li' The IMPULSE staff, editorial board and I L were highly praised at a recent awards as- - sembly and although this publication can be credited for many accomplishments, we did lege X ' ' E , not achieve our purposes which were: a stu- dent body informed about the operation, plans, and future ofthe college and a media for student editorial opinion. A monthly pub- lication cannot provide news which mean- while filters, however inaccurately, from un- official channels. The paucity of editorial material submitted by members of the stu- dent body can, we believe, be attributed to the lack of information, certainly not to the lack of opinion. ln anticipation of an informed student body we have suggested to the new student coun- cil the creation of a weekly bulletin co-spon- sored by the administration lthose possess- ing the informationl, the students lthose who need itl, and the faculty, It is hoped that this would provide a more accurate basis for opinion and editorial comment. To our successors we caution against the tendency of allowing IMPULSE to become the- common sham college newspaper which de- generates into a montage of faces, names, personalities and bylines of students, faculty members, and administration. This is publicity which is appreciated only by the publicized. ALI ILIARY The Student Wives Auxiliary was originated to serve and help the College, the student body and the community, and the Auxiliary members. It encourages the personal development of its members and aids in a better under- standing of the medical profession through monthly pro- grams and special events. The Auxiliary sponsors various fund raising proiects such as a bazaar, a fashion show, and a rummage sale. Profits from these proiects are then presented to the student body in the form of an annual gift. Service activities include contributing holiday food baskets to needy families, hospital service work, and serving as hostesses for the College Open House. SWA has ioined the Woman's Auxiliary to the Student American Medical Association lWA-SAMAJ, achieving na- tional status. Through national participation and mutual exchange of ideas, the Auxiliary will continue to progress.
