Dr. Ernest G. Brzshor Weighing in for ' the main event ' 2 lr, I t i ca, SILVER ANNIVERSARY OF OUR MATERNITY SERVICE Clinical teaching has always been a very important part oi the training for physicians in any school. More and more, it is becoming evident that this phase is of vital importance without detracting from the value of didactic training, lab- oratory work or other phases of the fundamentals. We are: confronted with the fact that in order to train physicians it is necessary that they have actual experience if they are to take advantage of such fundamental training and learn the values in real work. While it is usually difficult to get adequate clinical mate- rial in all phases of practice there is one that has been a particular problem, namely, the maternity work. Our owr school, similar to others, has faced this problem in many ways and it has been met at the College of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons in a practical and feasible manner by cooperating and working with the Los Angeles City. Health Department. Credit for organizing the Los Angeles City Maternity Service is due to Dr. Lyle G. McNeile, whose interest, zea and effort initiated the service in 1916. The high mortali and morbidity rate in maternity cases challenged his interes and as a result he saw the opportunity of rendering a re service to the needy in our city, then having a population o less than 500,000. Not long after its organization, graduates of our scho were given the privilege of taking civil service examination and opportunities to serve in the Los Angeles County Ho pital as interns. The interest of our graduates in maternit work attracted the attention of Dr. McNeile, and we wer Diet lecture to the mothers Nutritionist and student doctors H aw many centimeters?

vlat. invited to cooperate in his infant maternity service. We were really placed on probation, being given a trial, but we were assured of fair play and that was what we received. From this beginning we are now celebrating our twenty-fifth year of continuous service in this work. A list of our graduates who have served as residents on the service and in other capacities would require much space to present. Many of them have gained not only local, but national recognition. To name but a few, we see listed Doctors Glen Cayler, Ralph Smith, Wayne Dooley, Howard Merrill, Dorothy Marsh, Charles Mount III, Edward Reidel and a host of others. Many of them have served on the attending staff of the Los Angeles County 'Osteopathic Hospital and are recognized as important staff members of the obstetrical departments of our various hospitals, not only in California, but in many other states. Although the service has been continuous throughout the years, there was a brief period when it was taken over by the county but, during that time, it was operated by our own physicians in a similar manner. The city is divided into areas and the large eastern area is known as the Los Angeles Maternity Service, Unit II, or the Osteopathic Division. Clinics are held daily in the large and specious facilities on East First Street. Here, the entire professional staff is made up by our own physicians. Much volunteer service has been given by our doctors over the years. Two residents are in constant attendance and supervise the students who are assigned junior and senior externships on the service. Dur- ing the junior service they not only observe but assist their senior in examining patients at the clinic and caring for deliveries both at the home and at the hospitals.
