Brzshor Weighing in for ' the main event ' 2 lr, I t i ca, SILVER ANNIVERSARY OF OUR MATERNITY SERVICE Clinical teaching has always been a very important part oi the training for physicians in any school. More and more, it is becoming evident that this phase is of vital importance without detracting from the value of didactic training, lab- oratory work or other phases of the fundamentals. We are: confronted with the fact that in order to train physicians it is necessary that they have actual experience if they are to take advantage of such fundamental training and learn the values in real work. While it is usually difficult to get adequate clinical mate- rial in all phases of practice there is one that has been a particular problem, namely, the maternity work. Our owr school, similar to others, has faced this problem in many ways and it has been met at the College of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons in a practical and feasible manner by cooperating and working with the Los Angeles City. Health Department. Credit for organizing the Los Angeles City Maternity Service is due to Dr. Lyle G. McNeile, whose interest, zea and effort initiated the service in 1916. The high mortali and morbidity rate in maternity cases challenged his interes and as a result he saw the opportunity of rendering a re service to the needy in our city, then having a population o less than 500,000. Not long after its organization, graduates of our scho were given the privilege of taking civil service examination and opportunities to serve in the Los Angeles County Ho pital as interns.
