Dedication The Associated Student Body in profound admiration dedicates the 1953 Cortex to William W. W. Pritchard, Pb.G., D.O. A teacher who teaches students rather than sub- jects, a clinician who treats patients rather than diseases and a pioneer whose spirit epitomizes three quarters of a century of osteopathic prog- ress. His Work in the field of rehabilitation has opened new therapeutic vistas and provided a valuable service to the profession and the com- munity. Through his wisdom and charity he has exemplified a humanirarianism which we may all well strive to emulate. ,K 4 l , J i I X . SQX-UC PHJ3. College Azzzlitorium and Campus E11tnz11ce to the Azulztorw Arcbzwzy to Anatomy Lab The Library The library can be vital in so far as its volumes are con- sulted and read. Learning how to use the library's resources has been stressed for all who come to it. The card catalog, the library's memory, is pointed our and its use demon- strated. The student is taught how to use the reference books. As he does his research, he is able to explore or discard more readily a given phase of his subject. The library is truly a part of the teaching program. Another function is to provide the materials for learning and research. Books must be selected, ordered, processed and made available. Holding cards must be made for journal files. The missing issues and the duplicates must be listed in order to complete files and to make space. Exchange relations must be initiated with other libraries here and abroad. A two-fold purpose is met, volumes are added to the library and osteopathic and other medical journals are sent around the world to libraries where osteopathy is unknown and where the journals are needed. From the Freshman's introduction to the library to the time when he may be a busy general practitioner, faculty member or specialist, the library can serve him. The library is the genie, the memory, the brain, the key to knowledge, but the individual must furnish the initial spark. Margaret M. WHT lm Rayne B. Fairchild Preridenl of Student Body Student Council 1952-53 i Burdened with financial liability, the Student Body government undertook the year's activities with austerity and the ends in mind of both maximum activity and solvency. The council took both a positive and negative approach to ameliorate the Hnan- cial stress by running a raffle and by curtailing a number of lesser projects. Nevertheless, a successful social year was attained by com- bining the efforts of the Student Body and Alumni Association in a Fall Dance and a Spring Dinner Dance which stand as social milestones. In addition, many students ushered in 1955 at a student sponsored New Year's Eve party. The assembly programs presented were the most successful to date from the viewpoint of both attendance and quality. The biggest project of the year has been the 1953 Cortex which the council hopes will not only surpass any previous edition but also be both a Htting tribute to the Senior Class and a credit to the college. The council as a group has worked industriously, dedicated toward implementing the mandates of the Student Body and to laying a strong foundation upon which future student gov- ernments may function. . Raynes Art Editor and Layoutr To tell a story of a year at the College of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons-to compile a yearbook which is a history of all the events transpired is an impossibility. We, the staff, can record and picture but a few of these, the highlights so to speak, hoping that they will serve at some future date as a stimulus to happy thought in remembering the years of our professional training. You, the administration, the faculty, the alumni, the stu- dents and organizations of the college, have inspired this book-have made possible the pictures portrayed here-have, in short, supplied a purpose for our work. Traditions of former years plus present institutions destined to become traditions have found their places in these pages, integrating themselves into a familiar atmosphere of the osteopathic student. It is our hope that the conscious planning for the future evident throughout will prove the basis for the greatness of our college in the years to come. JACK L. He is the flower of our civilization and when that stage of man is done with, only to be marvelled at in history he will be thought to have shared but little in the defects of the period an.d to have most notably exhibited the virtues of the race. Generosity he has, such as is possible only to those who practice an art and never to those who drive a trade: discretion, tested by a hundred secretsg tact, tried in a thousand embarrassmentsg and what are more important, H erculean cheerfulness and courage. So it is that, he brings air and cheer into the sick room and often enough, though not so often as he desires, brings healing. -ROBERT LoU1s STEvENsoN 1 so 1 0 dc M150 ive' of O9 455' Q09 4 dv 49 490 5506 .. ,, Vcc Q' 6 'b wt' Cv 510 0x55 ' 'G o 40054: 0 Qiof' ,Go gf 5 535 'B rc CJXBQ-C1Q,OXV:' QxM9xc,xNX5 v-AO If 4 wx P4 woe A 6-0 ox . or-x-W00xMr ff Xfff X X X x. oy ypxesxovelypb oczaevpsav xsos-woo Soc 9 eewv 'wo 001 wi' 'gg gygggg +509 9595 9953. ot 1-510 6 601 9 we new cemqgvgoxe, 'om we vqqxyeia Q0 mov, 4,09 50921. Brzshor Weighing in for ' the main event ' 2 lr, I t i ca, SILVER ANNIVERSARY OF OUR MATERNITY SERVICE Clinical teaching has always been a very important part oi the training for physicians in any school. More and more, it is becoming evident that this phase is of vital importance without detracting from the value of didactic training, lab- oratory work or other phases of the fundamentals. We are: confronted with the fact that in order to train physicians it is necessary that they have actual experience if they are to take advantage of such fundamental training and learn the values in real work. While it is usually difficult to get adequate clinical mate- rial in all phases of practice there is one that has been a particular problem, namely, the maternity work. Our owr school, similar to others, has faced this problem in many ways and it has been met at the College of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons in a practical and feasible manner by cooperating and working with the Los Angeles City. Health Department. Credit for organizing the Los Angeles City Maternity Service is due to Dr. Lyle G. McNeile, whose interest, zea and effort initiated the service in 1916. The high mortali and morbidity rate in maternity cases challenged his interes and as a result he saw the opportunity of rendering a re service to the needy in our city, then having a population o less than 500,000. Not long after its organization, graduates of our scho were given the privilege of taking civil service examination and opportunities to serve in the Los Angeles County Ho pital as interns. The interest of our graduates in maternit work attracted the attention of Dr. McNeile, and we wer Diet lecture to the mothers Nutritionist and student doctors H aw many centimeters? vlat. invited to cooperate in his infant maternity service. We were really placed on probation, being given a trial, but we were assured of fair play and that was what we received. From this beginning we are now celebrating our twenty-fifth year of continuous service in this work. A list of our graduates who have served as residents on the service and in other capacities would require much space to present. Many of them have gained not only local, but national recognition. To name but a few, we see listed Doctors Glen Cayler, Ralph Smith, Wayne Dooley, Howard Merrill, Dorothy Marsh, Charles Mount III, Edward Reidel and a host of others. Many of them have served on the attending staff of the Los Angeles County 'Osteopathic Hospital and are recognized as important staff members of the obstetrical departments of our various hospitals, not only in California, but in many other states. Although the service has been continuous throughout the years, there was a brief period when it was taken over by the county but, during that time, it was operated by our own physicians in a similar manner. The city is divided into areas and the large eastern area is known as the Los Angeles Maternity Service, Unit II, or the Osteopathic Division. Clinics are held daily in the large and specious facilities on East First Street. Here, the entire professional staff is made up by our own physicians. Much volunteer service has been given by our doctors over the years. Two residents are in constant attendance and supervise the students who are assigned junior and senior externships on the service. Dur- ing the junior service they not only observe but assist their senior in examining patients at the clinic and caring for deliveries both at the home and at the hospitals. Accurata records are kept of all cases at the clinic as well as deliveries and postpartum care. The student has the opportunity o observing patients from the early stage of pregnancy to ter and delivery and for their postpartum examinations. Fre quently, more than a hundred patients are cared for at th regular clinic sessions. The entire Los Angeles City Healt Department is available for special cooperation in carin for these cases. I We are indebted to the Los Angeles City Health Depart- ment ancl many others who have cooperated in making this nossible. It is for us to carry on, develop and show our appre- iation by rendering even better service and doing more ood for that great group of people who are perpetuating e race and whose care is our responsibility. The Rehabilitation Center, under the able leadership oh Dr. W. W. W. Pritchard, has become an important adjunct to osteopathic manipulative technique and student physi- cian training. The need for a rehabilitation center has been more evi' dent with each passing year but the space was not available until the new osteopathic clinic was completed on january lst, 1952. Now, still within its first year of operation which included renovation of the old clinic building and procure- ment of necessary equipment, the center is treating some sixty-five patients, ranging in age from six months tc: seventy-six years. M of A Esther Byberg 4155 'Q Virginia Adams Wom The year 1952-53 found the Women's Osteopathic Junior Auxiliary again fulfilling their three-fold purpose of acquaint- ing the women members of students' families with future responsibilities in the community as representatives of the osteopathic profession, providing training for leadership, and offering social interests. ' Our primary philanthropic project is the continuous dona- tion each month of tray favors and cookies to the Los Angeles County Osteopathic Hospital, this year totaling over 1,500 tray favors and more than 55 dozen cookies. Other activties include an Italian Spaghetti Dinner-Dance as the Ways and Means project for our annual gift to the college, sewing sheets for use in the clinic, decorating the dinner tables for the Friends of the College Banquet, donating Christmas gifts to the children at the hospital, assisting as hostesses at the Open House in june, and operating a nursery during the graduation exercises. Chairmen of the standing committees were: Mmes. Ronald H. Runciman,t'Ways and Means, Thomas R. Dale, Press and Public Relations, Downey D. Martin, Program, Douglas Cop- ley, Membership and Hospitality, Russell E. Robinson, Trrans- portation, Laurel R. Thomas, Remembrance, Lloyd G. Sciaroni, Hospital, Jack Landau, Magazine, Charles D. Ktanzdorf, Clinic and C.O.P.8cS. Relations, and Eugene A. Felmar, Freshman Representative. Mrs. james R. Seals served as President during Summer and Fall of 1952. Our regular business meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month, always with an interesting and enjoyable program. These interesting programs have been varied, including talks by Drs. Henley and Simmers, films on childbirth and cancer, Christmas party for the children, a joint meeting with the Senior Auxiliary, a lecture on the Doctor and His Wife by Dr. Dorothy Marsh, a Silent Auction as a Ways and Means project, and a tea honoring outgoing Senior wives. g 1 an? I I: V' HF.. ,J Student Alumni Affairs Greetings to the student body, and congratulations to the gradu- ating class of 1955. As the President of the Alumni Association, I want to corn- ment on the success of the functions initiated this past year under mutual sponsorship of the alumni and the student body. We expect these Spring and Fall Dances to become traditional, and we hope that they will be anticipated with pleasure each year by both groups as a means of closer association. Profits made on the dances are used to increase the Student Alumni Fund. Many students have been able to complete their educations through the use of this fund. In addition, the fund has accepted this year the responsibility of distributing our air mail stickers, a form of publicity for our profession. At the Senior Breakfast, given by the Alumni Association, the seniors are presented with a year's membership in the asso- ciation. We sincerely hope that each graduate will want to extend his membership and become an active and interested participant. Among our projects this year has been our contribution to the construction and purchase of equipment for the dark room in the Student Union. This room has already proved its value in the production of the Cortex and in developing films for teaching purposes at the college. We will continue to welcome the suggestions of the student body for fostering an ever better relationship between the undergraduates and graduates of C.O.P.3cS. Sincerely, DOROTHY j. MARSH, D,O.
