The first Parapet recaptured and pro- longed memories dear to the graduates. To our class, as to the fifteen classes that have gone before us, The Parapet is a reminder of the best and most beautiful in our college days, For its very name is like the Mount- a challenge to the heights. The lVIount, which has turned our eyes away from the darkness and despair That all through our college years have threatened to subdue us, The Mount, which would not let us forg what most of our world has forgotten, That perfection of holiness and joy for which we are ultimately made, The Mount, which set our step so firmly upon the upward stair- This is the Moiint which the Paraipct will keep alive in our memories. inizifra Hon FHCULTU OFFICES OF ADMINISTRATION AND INSTRUCTION His Excellency MOST REXIERENIJ FRANCIS J. QYLLOF' CLHSS PUEHI This is the house, this is the lighted room VVC have been building in the growing gloom, And here are sheltered all our joys to come, And here shall bloom. Beauty and pain shall find our open doorg Both shall abide and share the life we liveg And here shall we take to our arms once more The gift we give. We have been building in the darkest years These walls against the stark onrush of fears, And lit our lamps for whom the stars came down Among their tears. Under our lintel shall the beauty grow In all its splendor that the lost may see Ours is the one all-perfect way to go, And joyously. How very much all has changed for us since that day! And yet, how unaware have we been of all changes. For even now, when we find ourselves the oldest of the 1NIount's present members, those early hours of awe and wonder seem only yesterday. All was new in those days, and we were sure of nothing. Our Junior sisters first lost their strangeness, and introduced us to college life at their Welcome Party. We came to know the library Con the upper floor of Le Gras 1-Iallj, and the Hall of Philosophy, whose name was almost enough to keep us outside its doors. Sister Miriam, Assistant Dean, took us in hand, and soon helped us to feel that we, too, had a definite part in college life. By and by, we began to take our places in that life, in the Chapel, in the Auditorium, and even in the right class rooms. In no time, there were Freshman teams in all the various athletic activities, and large Freshman delegations on all the hikes. Clubs became conscious of their Freshman members, and our personality blossomed out in the columns of the lfamyms Record. ln fact, it blossomed out too much, or so the Sophomores thought, and proceeded cn- thusiastically to check it. Hazing day found us in pigtails and multicolored costumes, and the halls resounded with our none too spontaneous songs in praise of our tormentors. But on the next day, we could forget all humiliating memories, as we proudly walked down the aisles of the Auditorium, with the collars of our new gowns stiffly scratching our necks, and were formally invested and made part of the student body. Henceforth, we would no longer be conspicuous in the ranks of academic blackness. iVe had become established as one more Freshman class at Mount St. V incentg then came December 7, 1941. And so we have become the first class whose four years of college have been four years of war, who have gone through each year hoping that, as there still was peace when we entered college, there would be peace once more when we left it. It was at that time that Nlother Vincentia died. And though most of us had not known her, we could still, somehow, sense her importance and the great loss wlueh her death meant to Mount St. V nlcent, as we stood guard at her funeral, on that stormy and desolate winter day. Many new doors had been opening to us during the past months, as we penetrated deeper into the college and its life. One more gate remained, and it swung open now: the great golden one that leads to Christmas time. For the first time, we took part in the Christmas preparations at the Mount, we dressed dolls, adopted orphans, adorned rooms, and saw our first Christmas play and club parties: till finally, receiving our last Christmas wishes from the decorated bulletin board, we left the Mount for our first long va.cation. When we returned, there was another first experience in store for us, and all remaining holiday spirit was soon quenched in the chilly stillness of examination hall. The new term opened gaily. The Faculty Frolics did much to temper any too exalted im- pression that we might have of the Mount's unbending dignity. Soon afterwards, we were able to explore and take possession of the new library in Fonthill Castle, an occasion which deepened our knowledge and interest in the campus, its tradition and history. The talents in our class, which had already become evident on numerous occasions, again came to the fore, when several of us took part in the performance of Mr, Queed, which our college presented. together with lVIanhattan. The background of this, our second term, was ever filled with defense and war activities, with Red Cross courses, knitting, and instructions in Radio Fundamentals. Among the more 65 outstanding events was our first formal assembly, at which we came to know Monsignor Fitzgerald, our vice-president and, towards the end of the year, we made our first acquain- tance with Alfred Noyes, at one of his lectures at the MOllHt. Unconcernedly, we listened to vague rumors about something called the Carnegie Ex- aminations, witnessed manifold preparations, and survived the end terms, till we finally took part inour first college commencement, till that incredible moment came when we turned our tassels, and left F reshmanhood behind us forever. We returned, after our first summer as college girls, to find our place one step higher on the ladder, and another class below us. CHow old we felt when we told the Freshmen that we had still seen the old li,brary!j We also found a new Assistant Dean, and several new girls to take the places of those who had left us. Another autumn, but this time we had already seen as buds the leaves which were now falling. Another retreat. Again, the war was soon brought close to us, this time from the Catholic viewpoint, when Miss Barbara Ward lectured on The Sword of the Spirit. We played different roles that year in Freshman week, we took an active part on hazing day, and a passive one at Investiture. Alas, there were fewer parties that year, everyone seemed to have forgotten us. But soon, we became important again, when we made our debut at the Sophomore tea, as we danced under beautiful autumn leaf decorations, with a scare- crow completing the theme! War activities were prominent again, and we did our best to buy and sell bonds and stamps. And in no time, Christmas was upon us again, a Christmas time which, perhaps, we enjoyed most, for we were no longer new, we belonged, and yet the end was yet far away. In the new term, we could welcome back Alfred Noyes. We were practicing enthusiastically for the play contest during those weeks, and could not have wished for a better reward: it was our class that won the tournament. We really outdid ourselves that year--we also received the athletic Cupg and comforted by such achievements, we even dare admit that never, in our whole college career, have we won a single basketball game. The end of that year held an extra tradition for the Latin students, who spent their last class at the Form Banclusia near Science Hall, strewing fiowers, and-innovation-refreshed by ice cream. Then came commencement, in which we were to be no longer mere onlookers. Weary hours of practicing preceded the great day of the Daisy Chain, but wc shall remember them less than the striking of the tower clock, that sent us on our solemn white way across the lawn, to hand over the garland and bid farewell to our Senior sisters. When we came back, after a summer which had been filled with war work for many of us, we were at last upperelassmen, and perhaps felt older and more dignified than we do even in our Senior year. We found many changes that fall. The college had expanded, and we had to learn the new topography of the former Academy building. There was a regular nursing school, to which some of our Freshman sisters belonged-much to our sorrow, for they would leave us after one year. And we welcomed the Mount's youngest members, whose appear- ance in the corridors at wash-up time was to give us such a homey feeling-the children of the nursery school. But, of course, our greatest pride that year was our Freshman sisters, we loved to welcome them at their party, though perhaps many of us had a secret wonder at the back of our minds, that, instead of being the guests, it was actually our class that was giving a Freshman party. We felt wise and scholarly indeed when we mapped out our courses that year. N ow it was for us to decide our studies, to attend to our major and plan our future. That was the be- ginning of all the pity bestowed on the English majors both by themselves and by others with their theses during the next two years. War activities continued that year, the display of a Japanese gun brought the war close to us: and our class led in the war bond drive. Blood donors, hospital volunteers, and workers for Chaplains' Aid were again among our numbers. Our knitting needles were kept busy, and we were proud to produce three blankets as the result of our efforts. 66 Retreat time came again, ushering in a long series of experiences at each of which we Juniors would think-this isn't the last time yet! In November came the OCC2tSl0l1 when the student body was formally introduced to Rev. lVIothcr Josephine. There were many more missing out of our ranks that year. We all felicitated Cecile O'Connor on her wedding: she is since a happy mother. A Even before Christmas we began to prepare for our big occasion, our own Junior Prom. And our labors bore fruit: just as we had hoped and dreamed, we promenaded down the new Colonnade Room that important evening in February, while the Hall of Philosophy, which had so awed us in Freshman year, was serving us as a friendly reception room.-In February, too, we had occasion to hear the Trapp family, many of us for the first time, for their last concert at the Nlount had been one year before we entered. The term flew by. and before long, we began to make plans for the summer. That year, it was our turn to accompany the graduating class at the Junior-Senior luncheon. 'But aside from that, at Daisy Chain and graduation, we were very content not to have the limelight on us yet: we had learned by now the value of being just a pa1't of the regular student body. Then, after the traditional ceremony, we found ourselves in possession of the Senior walk- and we left at last for vacation, unbelieving, newly-hatched Seniors. The Senior week-end hike ushered in our last year at M0llHt St. Vincent. Though we certainly enjoyed the dignity and special favors that came with our new standing, we would willingly have given up that feeling of finality on so many occasions, which also fell to our share. Again, we found many changes on our return. There was the largest Freshman class in the history of the M0llHt, which necessitated the conversion of part of the fourth floor into a dormitory section. The boarders liked the innovation of having their private Senior dining room. At the first formal assembly the new oHicers made their pledges: Justine Schmalzl as president of the Student Council, Helen Duffy as vice-president, and Betty Termini as our capable class president.-We also found we had a new neighbor: for a long time, the Grips- holm was anchored opposite the M0llHt. College had scarcely started when we began to be weighed down with the traditional Senior cares and worries. First on our minds was the Fashion Show, planned to show a fur- lough wardrobe, it certainly was a great success.-Then came our last Christmas parties and the Christmas Cantata, to which we could bring our friends. The boarders had their Christ- mas dinner, which was made a formal occasion this year. And we shall always remember the cold evening before vacation when, according to tradition, we went carolling on the C8,II'lpllS. What the second term of this, our last year held for us. the class of '45, you will know. dear reader, when you hold this book in your hands. We, who cannot look even into t.he near future, are content to close our history here, in the middle of our everyday activities as college girls at Mount St. Vincent.-As we proceeded on our way through our four college years, there have been fewer and fewer things to record, though more to remember: less of the new and unusual, and more of thc old and familiar. Could we give a fact by fact account of the years we have spent in our home? It is not by a record of facts that we shall remember our life at Mount St. Vincent, and no number of facts could make its picture complete. But each of its little, unimportant parts we have kept in our hearts, as it were in a box. The lid is closed now, but only temporarily: just ask us, and we shall gladly open it, and we shall be happy to show you all its contents.
