Foreword The past year has been an eventful one. Our headlines have been full of news of the Negroes' push for equal rights, Pope Paul Vl's Ecumenical Council, the crisis in Viet Nam, and the Fischer quintuplets of Aberdeen, North Dakota. As life for most of us is really beginning, for many it came to an abrupt end during the pa.st months. john F. Kennedy, Aldous Huxley, King Paul of Greece, Georges Braque, Estes Ke- fauver, and Pa.ul Lawrence Marsh were taken from us. 1963-64 marked another less-heralded, yet important event--the fiftieth anniver- sary of College High School. Our school's history began in 1913 as KSTC President Brandenburg called a group of high school students together to establish a laboratory school for the training of secondary school teachers. john Lance, destined to become one of the most successful college basketball coaches in the U.S. , was elected first student body president. In 1926 an organization with grades seven through twelve was established. From 1913 until 1952, College High occupied a section of Russ Hall, but in 1952 it was moved into its present quarters, on the corner, by the oval. . The 1963 fall semester began a.s usual for the students of College High School-- our football team fought hard, and the debate team won its share of trophies, and the Student Council kept things going and tidy. In january, our school achieved one of its major triumphs. The team of Newton-Thompkins-Malle-Wehmeyer brought home the state debating championship, and soon thereafter, Coach Harold Loy was named Kansas High School Speech Teacher of the year. The basketball season came and went. . .Despite the fact that the basketball team experienced a streak of poor luck, they were able to defeat one of the better teams in the state--the Erie Red Devils. Bob Emerson was the second highest scorer in the league missing the top honors by only one point, as the year moved along into the final Weeks of school. The junior Carnival, The Night of january Sixteenth, and the junior-Senior Prom all helped speed the approach of the year's end. Then on May 25, 1964 the stu- dents, faculty, and friends of College High were saddened by the death of their dedi- cated principal, Paul Lawrence fLarryJ Marsh. A few days later, another class of seniors graduated and the year ended. That was the year that was, and this yearbook is the record of that year. 2
