GEORGE KJ xy I S X 3 N Nu-,Y Q Q miar Glass History The Senior Class of 1954, having slaved in silence for twelve years in Bartlesville's beloved salt mines, er . . . schools, now publishes this tearful and sordid history designed to serve as a source of warning to those that follow after and a source of mirth to all others. This history may never he the subject of any textbook and it is doubt- ful that it will ever rank with the United States history in our schools, but, though the response of our unseeing successors be less than overwhelming, we must record these earth-shaking facts. Peering back into the dim recesses of our past, we find that our history really begins when we all emerged some- what innocently and apprehensively from the sixth grade and entered the barless bastille known as Central High School. No one will ever forget our first days at Central. We entered as wee seventh graders. We may have been small, but our class was one of the most ambitious seventh grade classes. We showed our love for little people by electing Don Neptune, President, and Bob Thomas, Vice President. Lunches were gorged in the gym during basketball season while intramural squads battled for the championship. As Eighth graders, we felt a little more at home. At least there was one class behind us, even though there were two ahead. Our President was Phillip Fields, Vice President was Jim Clark, and John Mason, Secretary. Janet Clerico was the triumphant Y-Teen Queen over all other grades in the seventh grade, and in the eighth, Carole Sue Benny Crenshaw won the struggle. Although Carole Sue was a Queen, her secret desire was to be a famous detective. Our ninth grade year was really wonderful! Our first stroke of luck came when both freshman and sophomore classes of '49-'50 moved to College High. We were left as king of old Central, and we certainly felt high and mighty. Ken Herring held the high office of President of the Student Body. John Kidd was President of the Fresh- man Class, Carole Stucky, Vice President, and Jay Garrison, Secretary. In football we romped over all our opposers. Our Cub football team was undefeated and the Cub basketball team only lost three games. Our Freshman Class presented the first Freshman Class Play at Central. The play was Cheaper by the Dozen. And at last we made it to old College High as- the underdogs in our sophomore year. Ken Herring took over duties of the class, while Bob Howard, assisted as V.P. Our boys dominated the B teams that year, while Sandy Gast did double duty as cheerleader and football queen attendant, escorted by Jim Foothills Bole. That was the year the Hi-Y went to Kansas City! fDetails censored.J Jim Clark made a name for himself by being named in the Sports Afield All-American Skeet Team that year. Charlotte Darnold was our yearbook candidate, while Jerry Henshall and Nancy Duffy were our choice for Sadie Hawkins Day. As Juniors, we chose Bob Howard President and John Kidd was Veep. Junior cheerleaders were Sue Janet Brownlow and Gayle Williams. Charlotte Darnold was Foot- ball queen attendant, while Marcia Grover gained recog- nition with her sensational Key-Hole Katie column in the Nautilus. Other members of the Junior Class who dis- tinguished themselves that year were Bob Thomas, who starred on the gridiron as Wildcat quarterback, and Jon Evans, who was seen at his best on the basketball court. Other fond memories of that year include the many hours spent in Miss Davis's American History class and a few unforgettable lines from the gems of literature avidly devoured in Miss Carlton's English III class. iLord Byron, we love you.l S0 ends the eleventh chapter of our Book of the Dying. With the long anticipated day of graduation at hand, we Seniors have closed our eyes to the injustices of educa- tion and our noses to the mingled smell of cafeteria meals and sophomores, to forge ahead scholastically and parting, leave behind us footprints in the sands of time to edify and horrify those who are to follow. We judiciously chose Bob Howard President, and John Thornton Vice President. Wearing our seniority with brash elegance, we named Jane Houchin Football Queen and John Mason and Char- lotte Darnold were elected Yearbook King and Queen. In the realm of sports, our crushing victory over the Muskogee Roughers, in football, was the cause of no small amount of celebration. fAll, of course, in strict adherance to the terms of our revered sportsmanship league.l The record of our basketball team also seems worthy of com- ment here. Our eventful senior year seemed to pass all too swiftly. The Senior Play began a series of rapid events which brought us to Sadie Hawkins Day and the Junior- Senior Prom and Associated parties fmy memory is a little hazy herel and which culminated in Senior Week and Baccalaureate. Commencement and the Farewell Assembly bring us to the close of the twelve-year sojourn. And now, as tears of nostalgia mingle with sweet 'cause of these darn hot robes, we bid fond and fatuous adieu to our erstwhile academy of erudition and casting a shud- dering glance over our whip-seared shoulders, flee College- High's confines for good. Knowing that it will stand as a milestone in mediocrity and a monument to the truly banal, we, the members of the Senior Class History Committee of the Col-Hi, do unanimously declare this to be the true and unbiased record of the Senior Class of 1954. Tulsa Central fought hard, and the game ended with a heart-breaking senn- of 20-13. The Wildcat football team gave pride to College-High by emerging with a highly creditable record of four wins and six losses. Tieing for fourth place in the usually tough Oklahoma Six Conference. the Wilclcats give credit to the expert coaching of the coaches Burl Stidham, Bill Holbrook, and Bailey Rickets. The Cats credited themselves more than their record might indicate. The No. 1 team in the state, Muskogee, discovered the amazing ability of the Wildcats, as they tasted their only defeat of 12-0, at the hands of the Cats. Overflowing crowds of 5,000 witnessed the great ability displayed by our team. The season was highlighted with the appointment of two College-High gridders to the All-Oklahoma-Six Conference. This honor was bestowed upon center, Richard Cramer. and end. ,lon Evans. Dewey 12 0- 'Tulsa Central 13 20 Stillwater 7 14- 'Muskogee 12 0 'Sapulpa 7 7 7 0 6 Coffeyville 7 77 7 12 14. Dewey .,7,,,, ,, Okmulgee .. ,, College-High's 1954- baseball team was forced to yield its Oklahoma Six crown to Sand Springs, but gave a good account of itself by retaining second place. The regular season ended with the Wildcats having a very creditable record of 15 wins and four losses. Bobby Green, a junior, paced the Cats in the scoring column with a 19 point average per game. The team had a 52 point game-average in the 19 games played. The first game with Nowata's lronmen ended with a decisive 59-4-6 victory for the home team. Next, the Cats outplayed Coffeyville to win a 55-42 decision but lost the next one to the Dewey Bulldogs in a heart breaker that ended with Dewey on the long end of a 50-53 score. However, Bartlesville tasted victory with the follow- ing teams in this order: Nowata, Muskogee, Sand Springs, Tulsa Webster, Okmulgee and the Central Braves. The Cats went down in a thrilling contest with the Rogers Ropers gaining an upset by a 53-52 score. Muskogee fell, and then it was the Cat's win by one slim point in a hard fought contest with Tulsa Centralls Braves 50 to 4-9. The Webster Warriors went down under the Wildcat's full-court press but a scrappy Sand Springs club knocked the College-High five off the top rung in the Oklahoma Six with a 55-57 score. Forty points was the margin in a return game with the Sapulpa Chieftains with Cats taking a 65-26 victory. The locals dropped an overtime tilt to Tulsa Rogers 63-65. College-High closed the regular season with victories over Sapulpa, Dewey and Okmulgee. Q X A ' fffffz-2' ' u -A ' 4 'IJ 56' X N75 Q H 4 V ,B ' 5 gg X if .J - U Msgs? 1.
